Steps for locating a 1910 Census Record after using Heritage Quest

Steps for locating a 1910 Census Record after using Heritage Quest's Index

After finding a person in the index, note the T624-Roll, the Part, the Page and the Sub Page

To find the image on a roll of microfilm:

1) Obtain the microfilm indicated on the Heritage Quest index CD (Number given according to NARA)

2) Look to see whether the page you are looking for is located in Part 1 or Part 2.

3) Look for the stamped number in the upper right corner of the census page

3) If what you are looking for is in Part 2 go through the stamped numbers until they return to one and then start increasing again

4) Now look for the stamped number that matches the page number found in the Heritage Quest index. If it is Sub Page B go to the page after the one containing the number you want.

To find the image through Ancestry.com’s Census Subscription:

1)      Go to Ancestry.com --> Search --> Images Online --> 1910 U.S. Census ---> New York --> New York

2)      Click on Manhattan Borough

3)      Click on Enumeration District 1

Part of the URL should now be displayed as:  roll=T624_1004&STAbrv=NY&startimg=4&endimg=26&rp=4

This is the part that will be edited.

4) Change startimg=4 to startimg=0 and change endimg=26 to endimg=2000.

5) Directly after roll=T624_ insert the roll number that you found in the index (i.e. roll 1044 would be T624_1044)

6) This step describes how to locate the correct image:

a) Take the page number and double it

  b) Look at what part of the microfilm the page is on (It should be either 1 or 2)

            c) If the number is 2, add 550 to the number found in step 6a

            d) Replace the number after rp= with the final number from step c (if on Part 2) or step a (if on part 1)

[This step must be done so that step 8 works correctly. On the census images, on all "A" sub-pages there is a stamped number. This stamped number is the one used by Heritage Quest in the index. On each roll of microfilm the stamped numbers run to somewhere in the 200s (taking up about 400 to 500 pages) and then begin again. By adding 500 one should get to the second set of stamped numbers.]

7) Go to the URL that you have just edited by either clicking go or

8) Look at the Census page that appears

    a) If it is a "B" sub-page go to the next page

    b) Once you are on an "A" sub-page look at the stamped number towards the upper right corner

    c)

            1) If the stamped number is higher than the page number from the index:

Subtract the page number from the stamped number and then multiply the answer by two

(i.e. 200- 160= 40; 40*2=80)

Subtract the number found according to last line from the stamped number (i.e. 200- 80=120)

Put the number found on the last line in the Go to Image box

            2) If the stamped number is lower than the page number from the index:

Subtract stamped number from page number and then multiply the answer by two (i.e. 200- 160= 40; 40*2=80

Add number found according to last line from page number (i.e. 200+ 80=280)

Put the number found on the last line in the Go to Image box

9) The page number (stamped number) of the current census page that you are looking for should now be close to the one that you found in the Heritage Quest index. From here you can use the arrows on either side to navigate until you find the exact page you are looking for. Remember that if you are looking for a “B” sub page, first find the number stamped on the “A” sub page and then go to the next image that follows it.
