hopman

Pieter Adriaenz Hopman was born 1650 in Barsingerhorn, N-Holland. Later the family moved to Callantsoog. In 1806 Callantsoog only had 178 inhabitants and two years later there were 58 families. Hendrik Hopman purchased a whaling ship called "Ark van Noah" on Jan. 5, 1783. Cornelis Hopman purchased a farm on 17 November 1773, called "Druyf en Boom". Jan Kornelis Hopman was a Commander and Whaler on the ship "Young Dirk". Dirk Cornelis Hopman was living in Oude Sluis and made his first whaling trip in 1767 to the Strait of Davis [Greenland]. Each trip he returned with a cargo bigger then 300 barrels of whale oil. In 1775 Dirk Cornelis Hopman purchased a large piece of land 44 mornings in Dutch measurements (90 acres) and named the farm "Greenland" after his last ship and lined the entrance to his property with 2 whale skulls. They are still standing to-day and are a tangible memory of the Dutch whaling fleet.

nauts

Areth Arnoldus Nauts was a farmer and merchant born 1659, he settled in Brunssum, Limburg about 1680. He is our oldest fore-father. Four children were born from his first marriage to Mechtel [Mettel] Jans, she was 24 years old. Five children from the second marriage to Gertrui Joosten. Arnoldus [Nol] Nauts [merchant, farmer] baptised 14 Januari 1741 in Brunssum and died 15 October 1820 at the age of 79 years old. On 17 Februari 1780 while traveling in the county of Gulik, Arnoldus is ill, while his wife Sibilla Oijens gives birth to a son. He and his wife were in Amsterdam on November 1783, where their son Arnold was born. In 1784 they were back in Brunssum. Leonardus [Neel] Nauts was a "huzaar" [calvary] in the Napoleonic War on the battlefield "Frufille at Villa Nuova" in Spain.

Vervolg

kies(z)ebrink

Gerrit Kiesebrink was born in 1675 on the farm called the "Kiesebrinks" in Olst, Hengvorden, Overijssel. This property was part of the Feudal-system of Overijssel. This is a loan system developed in Western Europe since the Eleventh Century. The German King [Kaiser] sought the help of the Bisschop of Utrecht for help with maintaining large pieces of land. This way the Bischop could keep power and control of this land by using certain men to work and protect these properties. Very little money was being circulated, land was on "Loan" and the lessee's were given rights and land also allowed to keep the proceeds for their lively-hood. The oldest loan certificates in Overijssel was in the year 1233. Over the next centuries this system, in many cases, from borrowing large pieces of land to ownership and inheritance to the next of kin.
