On this page, with the enormous assistance of Lilias B, is posted a family tree for Alexander Borthwick, born about 1750, and his wife Agnes Hyslop, born about 1768. I am especially interested in this family because I suspect that Alexander Borthwick was a brother or cousin of my John Borthwick, also born circa 1750. Both Lilias and I would love to trace back beyond Alexander as we think we'll find a common connection.

Alexander Borthwick

Here is the marriage entry in the Old Parochial Register forTweedsmuir Parish, Peebleshire:

On June 10, 1791, Alexander Borthwick shepherd in Over-Menzion, and Agnes Hyslop were married before these Witnesses: William Johnstone, weaver in Fingland; and John Blackley, shepherd in Fruid, and many others. (Lilias B)

As she was 18 years younger than her husband there is a possibility that Agnes was Alexander's second wife and our theory is that he was first married to Janet Blaiklaw (see below). Does any reader know of another earlier family of Alexander?

Alexander and Agnes are buried together in Sanquhar Cemetery, Dumfriesshire. The Cemetery Inscription is as follows:

In memory of Agnes Hyslop, spouse to Alexander Borthwick, who died 19 Nov. 1823, aged 55 years. Also of the said Alexander Borthwick, who died 17 Sept. 1828, aged 78 years. Also of Alexander, son of William Borthwick, who died 16 Sept.1860, aged 33 years.

An Alexander Borthwick, Shepherd of Over-Menzion, was witness to the baptism of Jean Borthwick, daughter of John Borthwick & Elizabeth Dinwoodie, on 13 July 1787 in Tweedsmuir. The Tweedsmuir OPR is as follows:

Baptisms 1787. July 13. Baptized Jean lawfull daughter of John Borthwick Shepherd in Riggs and Elisabeth Dinwiddie his spouse. Witnesses John Rennvick [?] Shepherd in Glenbreck and Alexander Borthwick Shepherd in Over-Minzion.

(This certainly looks like "Minzion" in the OPR but was apparently spelt "Menzion".)

Our theory is that Alexander Borthwick of Over-Menzion and John Borthwick of Riggs were either brothers or cousins.

As mentioned above, we suspect that Alexander's first wife was Janet Blaiklaw. Here is the marriage record for an Alexander Borthwick and Janet Blaiklaw.

Married on June 27, 1781, were Alexander Borthwick, shepherd in Fruid, and Janet Blaiklaw, daughter of John Blaiklaw, sheperd there. Married before these witnesses: James Beattie, shepherd in Carterhope, and Robert Alexander, taylor in Moffat.

Then the birth records for their children:

On July 26, 1784, baptized , Elizabeth, lawful daughter of Alexander Borthwick, shepherd in Over-Menzion, and Janet Blaiklaw , his spouse. This is the one where Robert Brown was a witness.

They had another birth, a son, Robert, born in 1786, also in Over-Menzion.

Since uploading this page a number of different Borthwick descendants have written to advise of their connections with this family. Gradually the family tree is growing, with twigs and branches right around the world.

The latest addition to the fold is the family of Alexander Borthwick & Mary Isabelle Lawson. Descendant Murray Borthwick advises that Alexander Borthwick emigrated to Canada, arriving in Halifax Nova Scotia on 28 March 1905 and went to Toronto, Ontario.The shipping manifests show that Alex Borthwick, age 33, Mrs Borthwick, age 33, William age 4 and Cameron an infant, were passengers on the vessel "Laurentian" embarking on March 17 from Glasgow, Scotland and Londonderry, Ireland bound for Boston as a final destination by way of Halifax. Six other children were born in Canada or later in Detroit, Michigan, when the family moved there.
