The United Empire Loyalist

Ontario is Canada's most populated province. It was first called "Canada West and Upper Canada" and was part of British North America. Many settlers in the late 18th century and early 19th century were Loyalists who had left the Thirteen Colonies at the time of the American Rebellion and migrated either directly to Ontario or to the maritime provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia first, then on to Ontario (Upper Canada). Others were soldiers from the British forces that were granted land for their services in the rebellion or the War of 1812. Later many English, Scots and Irish settlers migrated directly to Upper Canada. Many of these settlers helped establish the province and later many migrated further west or into the United States.
