Home of Mary Pitts Griffin in Clarkston, Utah

This one room cabin with a "buttery" and a "slant" was the home of William and Mary Griffin.  Laura Penelope "Dolly" Griffiths grew up across the street from Mary.  She described the house as being a "tiny palace" and the cutest little house (at least in a young girl's eyes).  In the slant was a black cooking stove, polished to a "T".  Preserves and food stuffs were stored in the buttery (pantry).  The floor was covered with handwoven wall-to-wall carpeting.  It had a thick "warp" and had been woven from rags by Mary's daughters, Theophenia and Caroline.  Mary had beautiful ruffled curtains around her bed, with ruffled pillow shams to dress it up in the daytime.  She took empty, round cheese boxes, padded the lids with wool and covered them in calico, with ruffles around the bottom.  These she used for extra chairs.  The inside of the box chairs were used for storage.  Mary Pitts Griffin lived alone in this home until the day she died in 1891.
