Johan L. Lichtenberger's occupation is given as "tanner" in the 1815 and 1820 list of taxpayers. In 1821 he was listed as a Somerset County Commissioner.
John L. apparently died in, or before, 1824 because it is known that
his son, Josiah, age 14, petitioned Estate #30-1824 of John L. Lichtenberger
for a guardian.
George Maury was appointed. It was related that John L. died while
on a business trip to Ohio. His body was never found. In Book One of the
Somerset County Auditor's Report, 1840 to 1850, pages 105 and 106,
comment was made of the "fact of the notorious insolvency of John Lichtenberger"
and that he died before his father died. The Somerset County Orphan's
Court, Docket Book two, December 5, 1826, page 432, decreed that the
John Lichtenberger estate valued at $1,392.26 be sold to pay his debts.
His property consisted of two lots with tannery thereon; one lot with
white house thereon; five separate lots.
On November 15, 1847 Killian Lichtenberger's (father to Johannes
L. Lichtenberger) estate was distributed among his heirs and
legal representatives.
John Lichtenberger's estate share of $443.79 was reduced to $215.92
because of a distribution of $227.87 previously paid to John Lichtenberger
when he was alive. Obviously John Lichtenberger had borrowed money from
his father, and had not repaid it.

What I
think I learned from Johannes L. Lichtenberger's probate packet
August 1818 to April 1825 John Lichtenberger was in partnership
with Mr. Lehr, in some kind of buiness dealing for which the borrowed money.
Also around this time, John Lichtenberger did business trading under
the partnership of Lichtenbeger & Snyder. John's in-laws were
Schneiders; one brother-in-law spelled his name Snyder.
Allegheny Bank of Pennsylvania made a substantial loan to Lichteberger/Snyder. Interest payments were made from 3 May 1820 to 11 March 1823.
A partnership between John Lichtenberger and George Lichteberger owed interest to Alexander Ogle (who was also a registrar for Somerset county) from Dec 3, 1820 to July 14, 1824 (perhaps interest on taxes?)
John Anderson was apprenticed to John Lichtenberger (tannery: leather harness/shoe making).
Before his death, John Lichtenberger owned a 2-story log home, painted white, on lot #101, located on the north side of Main Street in Somerset Borough, Somerset county, Pennsylvania. He also owned a tannery on lots #83 and #84, located on Union Street. He owned Popular Square (lots #85, 86, 87, 88) which he apparently let the city use as a park. He owned lot #76, located on the north side of North Street (see page 28 of probate packet).
Sometime in 1824 John Lichtenberger supposedly died (while on
a business trip to Ohio). He was greatly in debt and had many outstanding
loans at the time.
He left a wife, Magdelin, and six children -- the oldest age 14 and
the youngest age 1.
26 October 1824 Widow Magdalena released rights to John Lichtenberger's property to administrators of his estate. She was allowed to keep $72 in property (bare necessities for living, such as table, plates, 2 beds, 1 cow etc..).
5 June 1825 $1111.07 balance of estate was in the hands of estate administrators John Kurtz and George Lichtenberger. Permission was granted for the estate administrators to sell all real property (8 lots).
9 June 1826 John's son, Josiah Lichtenberger, petitioned the Orphan's Court for a guardian for him and his estate (even though his mother was still living). Perhaps this is actually asking to be assinged someone to be an apprentice to?? He claimed he was about 14 years old, but he was actually a few months past 16 years old. George Mowry was appointed guardian. Look for Josiah living with George Mowry family in the censuses -- what occupation was George teaching Josiah?
September 1827 -- administrators of John L. Lichtenberger's estate determined that the estate assets were insufficient to pay all claims. Auditors were requested.
30 January 1838 -- the audit was filed
25 April 1835 -- the audit was confirmed
28 April 1841 -- the packet was referred back for re-opening
because Rahuasen and wife claimed they had not been paid.
3 May 1841 -- the claim was denied because it had been previously
paid.
At the time of his death John Lichtenberger owed money to family members, as well as many other community members and banks.
