Home of John Jenkins and Anna Marie Jensen in Newton, Utah

Home of John Jenkins and Anna Marie Jensen
near the creek bottom east of town
5921 West 7200 North
Newton, Utah

This was the home John Jenkins built for his third wife, Maria Jensen Jenkins, later in her life.
As you are going east out of Newton, turn left onto the dirt road at 6000 West.
This home is built near the creek bottom, north of the road.  A large bam was built on the low hill further north of the home.
During the twenty or so years following their marriage in 1882, Maria and her children (10) moved often,
living at their ranch in the Big Meadows about 10 miles north of Clarkston (Idaho land);
in a log home in Teton Valley for one year until claim jumpers took it; at their ranch in Freedom, Wyoming,
at Mink Creek and Treasureton, Idaho; in a log home on the farm in Newton; and on 40 acres near Weston, Idaho.
Most of her homes were built of logs with dirt floors and sod roofs, although elk skins were sometimes placed on the floor for a carpet.
Marie moved back to Newton sometime after 1900 and lived there until her death in 1930.
It was in this two-story white home that her last two sons, LaVon and Burton, were probably born.
At first there was no indoor plumbing in the house and water had to be carried from the creek nearby.
This same creek also flooded to the doorstop on occasion.  Maria cared for John's mother (Ann Davies Jenkins) the last few years of her life,
and Ann died here in 1906.  She also cared for her brother Peter Jensen when he had Bright's disease;
he died in this home in 1910.  Maria died in 1930, however her husband, John, lived for another six years.
The home has been remodeled and added onto at the back.  Her youngest son is now living there (1994).
