Home of John Jenkins and his wife Mary Oviatt in Newton, Utah

about 11 South 200 East
Newton, Utah

This was the rock home John built for his first wife, Mary Oviatt.  Mary was from Farmington, Utah and they were married in 1869.
Their first home in Newton was built of logs, with a sod roof and a dirt floor.
John embraced the principle of plural marriage; he married Annie Clarke in 1873 and Anna Maria Jensen in 1882.
It is not known what year John built this rock home for Mary, but she lived here until her death in 1924.
A home for Annie was built across the street to the north and one for Maria was built about 1/2 mile further east;
however, the wives only lived in these homes during the latter half of their lives--their first homes all being of log and sod.

There is a one story wooden bungalow added onto the west side of this rock home.  The front door is facing east.
