Research Findings from Parish Records, on microfilm at the Salt Lake City, Utah LDS Family History Library.
Some information found just re-confirmed what we already knew or suspected; other is new information.

This research all pertains for Maren Larsdatter (Larsen)/ Nielsen of Vejby, Frederiksborg, Denmark who married Hans Jensen and had four children.
She then emigrated to America without her husband, who instead went to look for gold (in Australia? or California?).  Upon reaching Utah,
Maren Larsen/Nielsen married Jens Jorgensen, who later anglicized his name to James Johnson.  They resided in Weston, Idaho and Newton, Utah.

(Immigration of Lars Nielsen and Maren’s sister Bendte)

LDS FH Library Film #025,696.   "Emigration Records of the Scandinavian Mission."  Record A  1854-1863.  1863.  Copenhagen Conference.  Page 150; line 9.  Group of five traveling together, assigned to the "Boyd" ship.  Lars Nielsen (Underuf) age 72, Farmer.  Birthplace:  "Sealand" [?] Nation:  Denmark.  Land money $775.  Traveling with Jens Rasmussen, age 48, (a farmer) and his wife Bengta Rasmussen, age 44; and their two children Mads Jensen, age 12, and Laurine Jensen, age 3. A half team of horses was secured in the name of father, Lars Nielsen,  for their travel across the plains of America.  No other money was put up by the group. $221 passage money was also paid in his name and $284 was exchanged for coin.

Maren and her children were on a page following this entry.  “Bengta Rasmussen” is Lars Nielsen’s daughter Bendta.  She is also a sister to Maren.

Since we knew that Lars had traveled to the U.S. with Bendta and her husband, we assumed he stayed with them once he got here, especially since he was 73 years old at the time.  Sure enough when we checked the 1870 census for Hyrum, we found them in the same household, and Lars Nielsen was then 80 years old.  But in the 1880 census he was gone.  I assumed he had died in between.

I did a search of the online Utah Cemetery Inventory Project <http://history.utah.gov/Services/lcburials.html>  for any “Lars Nielsen” buried anywhere in Utah.  I found:

Lars Nielsen
born 8/16/1790 in Unery, Sjulland, Denmark
died  12/16/1872
buried in Hyrum city cemetery.  Plot: A-28-8.
Comments:  Father to Enger & Brent Nielsen

This was the right name and the right age, and the right location, but at first I guessed this wasn’t our Lars Nielsen because the birthplace was wrong and because I couldn’t figure out who Enger & Brent Nielsen were.  There were no other Lars Nielsen’s buried in Hyrum.

But the idea of it wouldn’t leave me.  I got to wondering if the transcription contained an error, either because of difficulty in reading the writing, or because someone had mistakenly given false information, or because their accent had made them hard to understand.  I wondered if “Enger” couldn’t be Lars Nielsen’s daughter, Inger, and “Brent” was his daughter  Bendta [Rasmussen].  And “Unery” is similar to Unnerup.  I couldn’t find any county in Denmark named “Sjulland,” even on the old map prior to 1793.

So I went over to the Hyrum cemetery, and there I found Lars Nielsen, born 16 August 1790 and died 16 August 1872.  Next to him is a marker for Inger Nielsen.  And a few rows away is the one for his daughter Benta Ramsussen and her family.

When I checked the online “Mormon Pioneer Search” <http://www.xmission.com/~nelsonb/pioneer_search3.htm> I found Inger Nielsen had indeed come to the U.S., in 1866, three years after the rest of her family.  (I still need to double-check this on microfilm “Scandinavian Emigration Record”.)

Then, just to double-check my assumptions, I check the Hyrum ward records on microfilm “Record of Members [1860] – 1901…Hyrum Ward”  FH Film #25991; items 1-2” and found Lars listed, with his death date of December 16, 1872.  It matched.

So now we know where Maren’s father went, when he died, and where he is buried.

I’ve also been surprised to find that many (if not all) of Maren’s family from Denmark came to Utah.
