Zachariah W. Arnold,

William Arnold and James Arnold

of Abbeville and Greenwood County, South Carolina

This is an outline for my own Arnold family and goes back as far as I can get it at this present time. My family consists of my great great grandfather, Zachariah W. Arnold and his two brothers: William Arnold and James Arnold; all three being found in the 1820's living in what was then, Abbeville County, South Carolina. The parentage of the brothers is still unknown but from census records taken on the brothers, they all three appear to have been born in South Carolina.

The Arnold brothers lived while in South Carolina, in what is now Greenwood County between the towns of Greenwood and Cokesbury. In the early 1800's, this section was Abbeville County and Greenwood County took its name from a plantation owned by John McGehee. The county was formed in 1897 from parts of Abbeville and Edgefield counties, which were originally part of the old Ninety-Six District. This part of the back country was not settled until the mid-eighteenth century. The town of Ninety-Six was established as a frontier trading post around 1730, and it was the site in November 1775 of one of the first South Carolina battles of the American Revolution. The plantation of "Arnold" can be found on Old Matthew's (Mathis) Road, from the 1820 Abbeville County Mills Map.

James Arnold left South Carolina first, moving to an unknown location in Tennessee where he married and started his family. Zachariah and his brother William left South Carolina about 1844 with their families and they are said to have also moved to Tennessee. I know the Arnold family arrived in Mississippi just after 1845 as they are not list in the census records but William Arnold is listed in a Old Tishomingo County court record as a lawyer in 1846 and Zachariahs' son, John Frederick Arnold, is in the State Legislature for Old Tishomingo County in 1848. James Arnold, brother to Zachariah, moved his family out of Tennessee and to Old Tishomingo County by 1860 when they are found on the census records.

I do not know what happened to William or his brother James after 1860, but Zachariah stayed in Old Tishomingo County and settled just south and east of the town of Jacinto. He died about 1857 and is buried on the old Arnold property at the Old Clausel Hill Cemetery on the border of Alcorn and Prentiss County, Mississippi. He is buried next to his second wife, Casander Gray. This property was originally owned by Zachariah's son, John F. Arnold and sold to his brother William H. Arnold in 1880's. William then donated the land to the Methodist Church after relatives of his wife (named Clausel) developed typhoid fever and were buried at the site.

John F. Arnold, son of Zachariah, served Tishomingo county many years as a Circuit Judge. He represented Tishomingo county in the legislature of the state in 1848 (source: "Abstract of Goodspeed Mississippi" Book 1962, page 48). He was born in the Abbeville District of South Carolina in 1826 (now Greenwood Co., near Deadfall), and moved to Mississippi after his father. During the Civil War, he served in the Mississippi 32nd as a quartermaster with the rank of Major, in the Confederate service, and married a Tippah county lady, Miss Julia Fields, in 1855. Following the war, he returned to his profession and was closely identified with it the remainder of his busy life. John and Julia Fields Arnold had five children, all born in Mississippi.

John Frederick Arnold
John Arnold entered into a partnership with a Robert A. Hill, in Jacinto, Mississippi in the 1850's. He was then, and had been for a number of years, a probate Judge for the county. This partnership continued until May 1866. In 1857, a committee was created by the town of Corinth to establish a road between north Mississippi and the town of Jacinto. The committee consisted of John Frederick Arnold; W. F. Lambert; J.C. Reed; Calvin Alexander Taylor; C.D. Key; and Robert Williams. (source "History of Old Tishomingo County" by Fran Alexander Cochran). Other organizations that John belonged to was; President of the Agricultural Society Members, Tishomingo Chapter in 1861 and IPR Master Mason, Jacinto Lodge #142 - Tishomingo Co., Miss.; and President of the Jacinto Male Academy in 1856. His wife, survived him five years and both are buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in downtown Graham, Texas.

Robert F. Arnold, son of John, was Educated in Jacinto College in Mississippi. After completing his education, he engaged in teaching school for a few months and while doing so, took up the study of law. He was only nineteen years of age when he was admitted to practice. He accompanied his parents to the Lone Star State during the centennial year to win a position among the able expounders of the law. The twain established themselves in Fort Worth, where the firm of Arnold, Paddock & Arnold was an active and effective factor of the bar from October 1876 until December 1879, at which time the Arnolds withdrew and followed the Federal Court to Graham, ever afterward the radial center of their professional activities. When Robert F. Arnold was only 22 years old, he was enrolled at the bar of Young County, and it is noted that he possessed the natural endowments so essential to become a good lawyer. He was a hard student and was ambitious to succeed. Night study at Blackstone & Parsons had prepared him for admission in youth, and day and night study now prepared his invulnerable brief or planned and built impregnable fortresses about his court cases. He knew and understood the law and his arguments before the court came early to be strong, clear and complete. By the time he had extended his acquaintance throughout the district, his fame as an able lawyer had been achieved.

Backrow standing; L to R: Henry Guy Arnold and Robert Frederick Arnold; Sitting; L to R: Melville M. Arnold (aka Millie); Ninah A. Arnold (aka Willie) and Judine Arnold (aka Julia).

He was on the side, one or the other, of some of the most famous murder cases in the county from the start, and the firm of Arnold & Arnold embraced two lawyers whose banner seldom bore the word "failure". Robert F. Arnold was only 25 years old when he was elected to the position of County Judge. The original building, which still houses the court in which he practiced, still stands. Across the street from this building is where he had his office. The town of Graham, Texas, is built around the Courthouse. Judge Arnold served at different times as Judge of the Court of Criminal Appeals, District Judge and County Judge. In 1889 he defended the noted Marlow Mob prisoners and carried the case to the Supreme Court of the USA to get a verdict for his clients. When the Federal Court was removed from Graham to Abilene, Texas, a strong support of the legal fraternity of the County was taken away, and the most desirable business and best source of revenue to attorneys was shut off. The bar dwindled down to suit District and County Courts until only Judge Robert F. Arnold and C.S. Johnson of the "Old Crowd" were left to answer the roll.

In December of 2003, I heard of an Arnold DNA study that was beginning and as eager as I was to find my lineage, I immediately signed up. When the results came back, I was totally surprised! My Arnold DNA matched that of the Rev. Zachariah Arnold of Laurens Co., SC and matched the DNA of descendants of James and Martha Atkinson Arnold of Mecklenburg Co., VA. I suspected a relationship with the Laurens Co., SC Arnolds so I was not really surprised there; but with the Mecklenburg Co., VA Arnolds? In all the years of my research, I never even imagined that relationship!!! But DNA does not lie so it is a fact that both the Abbeville Co. and the Laurens Co., SC Arnolds are related to each other as well as being descended from James and Martha Atkinson Arnold of Mecklenburg/Lunenburg Co., Virginia. Now my work really begins!

My Arnold Family

1. William ARNOLD - b: Bef 1798 (src.: 1820 Abbeville County SC Census). In 1820 was living in Abbeville County with one male, 18-26, and one female, 18-26. No slaves in household. Is found in 1845 on court records as an "attorney" in Corinth, Mississippi but is not on any census records. Is not found in the area after 1845.

2.  Zachariah W. Arnold - b: 1798 South Carolina (src.: Tombstone: Old Clausel Hill Cemetery) d: 1855-1857 Prentiss Co., Mississippi (src.: Tombstone Transcription: Old Clausel Hill Cemetery). Religion was Methodist. Married abt. 1825 to (1) UNKNOWN, who probably died around 1831 in South Carolina and (2) Casander GRAY in 1836 Abbeville Co., South Carolina (src.: Abbeville District, South Carolina Marriages - 1777-1852" page 2). Is on the 1830 Abbeville County, SC Census, pg. 19, with 15 people in household, including the eight slaves he owned. In 1850, Zachariah Arnold is found in the 1850 MISSISSIPPI SLAVE SCHEDULE, TISHOMINGO CO., as owning one male black slave who was 56 years old. Casander Gray died 1855 Prentiss Co., Mississippi and is buried next to her husband in the Old Clausell Hill Cemetery.

Many believe that Casander Gray is the daughter of Frederick Gray of Abbeville Co., SC due to the fact that she and her husband are listed in his LWT. My reasons for not believing that she is his daughter is because in Frederick Grays' LWT, he names each of his children individually. When he mentions Casander Gray she is just referred to as "wife of Z.W. Arnold".

MY NOTE: This has to be Zachariah W. Arnold instead of the Rev. Zachariah Arnold of Laurens Co., SC due to the fact that the Rev. Zach passed away in 1829, one year before this estate record. This is the first record found where Zachariah W. Arnold is listed with a member of the Laurens Co., SC Arnolds (Reuben Arnold).

James Arnold was born in South Carolina according to the 1850 Tishomingo Co., MS Census but had been living in Tennessee prior to moving to Mississippi. His wife was named "Clarissa Arnold" on the census records. I have found in the AFAS Publications "The Benjamin Arnold Bible" owned Felicia Arnold Sullivan, mention of a Clarissa (Clara) Arnold who married James H. Arnold, May 6, 1827. Do not know if this is correct or not. I do know that James was two years younger than Zachariah and both are listed as traveling down the Natchez Trace together.

On 24 Oct 1838 Zachariah W. Arnold, Timothy, F.G. Thomas bound unto Moses Taggart Ord. Abbeville District sum $500.00. Z.W. Arnold was gdn. of Martha Ann, John W. Arnold, minors.

NOTE: Believe this "Wm. B. Arnold" to be WILLIAM BLUNDELL ARNOLD, of the Spartanburg County, SC Arnolds, son of James Arnold and Mary Blundell. William Blundell Arnold moved from South Carolina to Tennessee and finally to Johnson County, Texas by the 1870s.

ZACHARIAH W. ARNOLD is the one found on the 1830 Census. I am unsure as to who the Arnold children are though.
