MINUTES OF THE GERKING FAMILY MEETING
August 11, 1996

No Host This Year

Eighteen members of the Gerking Family gathered at the beautiful Port of Cascade Locks Marine Park on the banks of the Columbia River for the 37th annual Gerking Reunion. The following signed the guest register:

Evaline Bixby St. Helens, OR Lucille Heinrich Gresham, OR
Gerry Bixby Tacoma, WA Beth Perry Johnston Newport, OR
Bob (James) Bixby St. Helens, OR Darrell R. Leabo The Dalles, OR
Jay A. Bixby St. Helens, OR Edith (Kitty) Leabo The Dalles, OR
Joe Bixby Tacoma, WA Charlotte Perry Hood River, OR
Helen Gerking Milton-Freewater, OR Ken Purvine Hillsboro, OR
Laverne Gerking Milton-Freewater, OR Mary Lou Puvine, Hillsboro, OR
Lynden Gerking Walla Walla, WA  Opal Richey Hillsboro, OR
Nancy  Gerking Walla Walla, WA Capt. Wally Young Honolulu, HI

There was no reunion host this year, nor was there a President of the Association.

The Bixby family led the group in singing grace  prior to the traditional potluck meal.  As usual, there was much good food. The Bixbys were kind enough to furnish soft drinks for all, and Beth Johnston furnished coffee.

Following the meal, the group prevailed upon Lynden Gerking to lead the meeting, and he graciously consented to do so. Lynden had been president of the Gerking organization for many years, and his skill at conducting meetings was still evident.

Consensus of the group was to hold next year's reunion at the same place because of its central location and pleasant surroundings. A tented area will be sought for next year's meeting. Once again, there were no volunteers to fill the office of President. Beth Johnston will continue as secretary-treasurer.

Beth Johnston told the group she had announced the reunion on genealogy mailing lists on The Internet and had been contacted by several people including Richard Gerking of Ottumwa, IA. Richard is a grandson of John Walker and Ida May Gerking. Beth also has posted the minutes of last year's meeting in a Gerking section of her personal web home page.

Thanks to a very generous donation from Lynden and Nancy Gerking, the reunion collection amounted to $192.10.

Respectfully submitted,
Beth Perry Johnston, Secretary
