A Note from the Editor

l

 . . . and a Note of Sorrow

It’s been a while since the last newsletter, and there’s lots of news (almost two years’ worth!) to share; thus, we have a much longer newsletter this time. There are:
Our wish for all of you is for wonderful holidays and an even better New Year!
l
The joy of the 1997 reunion was shattered soon afterward by news of the sudden passing of Martha Rhoda Wells on Friday, August 8, 1997. A memorial service was held August 12 in Vernonia, OR.

Martha was President of the Gerking Family group for many years and contributed much to the maintenance and growth of our organization. She gave up her office reluctantly as both her mother’s health, as well as her own, declined. Her mother, Maude Beck Wells, died in September, 1996.

Martha and two of her sisters, Patricia Adsit and Margaret Wells, had recently moved to Newport, OR. I talked with Martha just before leaving for the reunion, and she asked that a standing invitation be issued at the reunion for family members who

found themselves in Newport to come visit.

In addition to her family ties, another of Martha’s genuine interests was an organization called Housing Our Families. She was a founding board member of that group and served on the board for 4 years, most of the time as its treasurer.

On September 27, Housing Our Families honored Martha in a public ceremony by renaming the former Albina Plaza “Martha Wells Court.” Martha was aware before her death of the plan to rename the property. The flyer announcing the naming ceremony noted Martha’s “passion, energy, and commitment” to that cause. I believe those words could also have described her dedication to everything she did. She is missed.

BOOK CORRECTIONS

MARTIN PETERSON GERKING by Betty Gerking Roach

My grandfather, M. P. (Martin Peterson) Gerking, did not lose a finger in the Indian battle of 1878, and his horse was not shot as stated in the book. He could not find her there and thought that she may have been shot but found her in the Livery Stable in Pendleton. As my Grandfather told it, the fellow that rode her into Pendleton put her in the Livery Stable in Pendleton and the fellow that ran the stable knew the horse and would not let this fellow take her out. Anyway, I’m not sure who, but someone saw my Grandfather when he got back to town and said to him, “Your horse is down in the Livery Stable.”

Dad’s name was Mart and not Martin.

DRESKE (page 349)

“The daughter of Ronald Everett Dreske (Deidre’s mother) was Marie Dreske. Phyllis was the second wife, mother of Edward Ronald and  a daughter of Bambi Leon Blieu (12-5-1-4-3), date of birth 1 July 1952.” (The above information was submitted at the 1997 Gerking reunion, but the name of the submitter was not given).

Miscellaneous News

Lost & Found Department

Actually, this is the “Found” Department. If you attended the reunion in August, you might be missing something! Left behind were a brown plastic pie server and a stainless teaspoon (the pattern isn’t named but looks a little like confetti cascading down the handle), it’s International, and is a good heavy weight. If either (or both) of these belong to you, let me know and I’ll see they get returned to you.

Gerking Angels

We’re always grateful to everyone who contributes information for use in the Newsletter. Without that information we would be unable to reach our goal of keeping Florence’s latest Gerking Book updated.

Special thanks go to everyone who shared their family information and funds.

Special Gerking Archangels . . .

. . . are Lynden and Nancy Gerking, who made a very substantial contribution to the family fund at the 1996 reunion, and Frank & Mia Gerking and Dick & Frances Bowers, who did the same at the 1997 Reunion. Thank you so very much!

Blue Mountain (Kees) Cemetery

Upon learning of the severe ongoing vandalism problem at the burial place of so many Gerkings and other family members, the Gerking Family Association began donating money each year to help with restoration and protection. Following last year’s reunion I traveled to Eastern Oregon to do genealogical research and while there visited Blue Mountain Cemetery. Here is a picture as it looked in August, 1996

Bob Gilliland of Weston, OR has created a page devoted to Blue Mountain Cemetery. Click here for a look at his page. — Beth

Nests of Gerkings Found on the Internet!

It’s true! There are Gerkings out there in Cyberspace! If you have email and we haven’t made contact yet, please send a message and let us know you’re there and a little about yourself.

My email address is [email protected]

REMEMBER . . . Don’t Trust Anyone Under 40!

Now that Florence is “retired,” it’s up to you to keep up your own family histories. She encourages everyone to do that and to send news of births, deaths, and marriages not in the latest Gerking book to the Newsletter. By keeping current via the newsletter, we will have a continuing update on the Gerking family.

As your children move away from home don’t forget to add their names and addresses to the mailing list. It’s said that one must be at least 40 to develop a real interest in family history, so if you suspect your young adult isn’t keeping the newsletter up to date, do it yourself.

A Correction & An Apology . . .
or, I knew better than that!

In the 1997 reunion invitation, we featured a teaser picture showing three obviously happy men on the outside of the flyer, then inside identified this unique trio. Unfortunately, I misidentified the man on the right (guess his beard fooled me!). That man’s true identity is Samuel Frank Gerking (12-7-4-2), husband of June and father of Frank (both of whom were kind enough not to tar and feather me). To see the picture in question, click here

Also, I’m informed by someone near and dear to me (my mother) that luau shirts were very “in” that year!

The Gerking Family In America

Descendants of John Gerking and Rachael Rice  — A Genealogy and History
3rd Edition Revised 1990 — by Florence Chappell Bowe

The 1990 printing of what we fondly call “The Gerking Book” was nearly sold out when it was first distributed at the 1991 reunion. Not many months later, the entire supply was gone, and we haven’t been able to fulfill the many requests that have been made for the book.

At the reunion this past August, the family decided to reissue the book if there are enough buyers to make another printing run cost-effective.

The Gerking Family in America consists of 430 pages in the main body, and a new 75-page Index. (The Index is also being made available separately for those who have already purchased the book; the cost is $4.00).

The book originally sold for $25.00, and postage ran about $3-5.00. We hope to have enough orders to keep the cost of the second printing at about the same level. The cost of printing will be determined by how many copies we have run, i.e., the more copies that are run, the lower the per book price will be.

We are asking for no money for the book at this time. Instead, we ask you to send email to Beth if you are interested in purchasing the book. After we know how much interest there is, we will be able to determine a price for the book and will let you know what it is. At that time, we will request a deposit equal to half of your order’s cost. No books will be printed until (and unless) we can cover the cost!

And while you’re at it, why not send in some news of your family for the next Newsletter?
