THE CALLICOATTE PAGE

Captain Christopher Newport, in supreme command of the three ships "The Sarah Constant", "The Goodspeed" and "The Discovery", and 105 "Adventurers". sailed from London's port on 19 December 1606 arriving at Cape Henry, Virginia on 26 April 1607 and then at Jamestown, Virginia 13 May 1607. (Jamestown & Her Neighbors by J.E. Davis, p.19)

Captain Newport's second supply ship to the Jamestown Colony in 1608 carried one WILLIAM CALLICOTT of London, a silversmith, making this the first appearance of this name to the New World. William Callicott accompanied Captain Newport on his expedition up the James River to the Monacan (Manakin) territory in hopes of discovering veins of gold and silver.
(Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography,, Vol. I, p. 202)

A delayed Probate Memorandum filed with the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, London, dated 1 August 1659, declares by witnesses that a WILLIAM COLLCUTT, Seaman, Planter in Virginia, Widower, died on the 28th or 29th of March 1659 (evidently at sea). The witnesses declare the intent of William to dispose of his estate to Patience Dundy, his wife's kinswoman, whom he has kept and brought up from a child. Also mentioned is his sister Anne West. Also included under date of 5 August 1659 is a Letter of Administration naming Anne West, Aunt, as legal guardian of Patience, minor.
(Principle Probate Registry, Canterbury, London, England)

No relationship has been established between the two-above William Callicott/Collcutts.

There are also records of RICHARD COLLICOTT, THOMAS CALCOTE, CHARLES CALDICOT and others and the one we believe starts our lineage is JOHN CALLICOTE of Essex County, Virginia.
From 1708 through 1717 John is witnessing wills, posting bond, listed as debtor to an estate, defendant in a court case, and Administrator of an estate. There is record of a John Calico dying in St. Paul's Parish, Stafford County, VA in 1717.

Our story starts with the will of WILLIAM HOPKINS of Elizabeth City County, Virginia, dated 20 May 1717, bequeathing to nephews WILLIAM and JAMES CALECOTE each a two-year old heifer. (Rec.June 1717) It seems likely that the wife to John Callicote was a MARY HOPKINS as each son named a daughter "Mary".
