Naomi DeSelms Cox's 1911 Diary

Farm Life in Plain Township, Wood county, Ohio

Naomi Deselms Cox born in OH 19 Oct 1855. She was 55 years old as this diary begins.

She married John Hughes Cox in Wood Co OH 27 April 1879. In 1911 they lived in the north part of Plain Township in Wood county on what is now Hannah Road. The acreage north of them was Middleton Township. They lived on the old Chapman farm. You can see the land belonging to Esther Chapman in the 1886 plat map. The 1910 census was helpful to identify the neighbors mentioned in the diary of 1911. The 1910 plat map was also helpful showing exactly where people lived. I may get ambitious and post a piece of that map here at some point. Some of their nearest neighbors in 1911 would include the acres owned by Henry Goodenough, Dan Smith, Frank Self. Harve and Inda Everett were right across the street. Wenig, Ewing, Coen, LeGalley, Johnston, Thomas, Jewell, Armitage, and Householder families were nearby.

Naomi Esther DeSelms Cox was a  farm wife and the mother of eight children in Wood Co in northwestern Ohio. She frequently refers to John her husband, whom she calls "Pa" and her five children living by 1911: Ethel Ewing (who lived in Toledo with her husband Jim; Jim's parents lived very near Naomi and John Cox), Johnny (and his wife Anna), Ralph (R.E.), Clyde (in dental school in Columbus) and Jason who still lives at home in 1911. Her youngest grandchild is always "Babe". It is not unusual for some of the little grandchildren to spend days with her.  Visits to and from the extended family in the area are frequent. Elsewhere on these webpages is additional information about these folks. Notice the blue links to findagrave, gutenberg, and other web sites that may be of interest within this diary. Italics are my added notes.

Monday, Dec. 11, 1911        Toledo, O
What a rainy bad day this has been or this forenoon any-way and about all night It slacked up towards noon and as they couldn't husk for a couple of days I got ready and came down to Ethels I got the washing ready and Pa took it up when he took me to the car
I found Baby Dorothy feeling quite badly, they were quite surprised to see me as usual as they seldom know when I am coming.

Wednesday, dec. 13, 1911
This has been quite a nice day though it was dark for awhile this morning. Ethel washed and I took care of Baby she felt a little more like playing today but didn't rest a bit good last night.
I came home at 2-30 nearly missed the car this time, it was there loading up when I got there. The boys went up town this A.M. and Jason stayed but Ralph came back Pa husked some. Got a letter from Clyde he is counting the days till Christmas.

Thursday, Dec. 14, 1911
It froze some last night and was a lovely frosty morning, they husked till noon and was getting started out for the afternoon when it commenced raining or sleeting rather, Jason took a load on to Togany but Pa and Ralph staid in for the afternoon as it kept raining a little all P.M. and now tonight it is raining hard   What awful weather it is. I baked pies, cookeys and tended to my churning, etc.
