Naomi's Diaries
Naomi DeSelms Cox's 1912 Diary ©
Farm Life in Plain Township, Wood
county, Ohio, continued
Naomi Deselms Cox born
in OH 19 Oct 1855. She was 56 years old as this 1912 diary begins.
She married John Hughes Cox in Wood Co OH 27 April 1879.
In 1912 they lived in the north part of Plain Township in Wood
county on what is now Hannah Road. The acreage north of them was
Middleton Township. They lived on the old Chapman farm. You can
see the land belonging to Esther Chapman in the 1886 plat map. The
1910 census was helpful to identify the neighbors mentioned in the
diary of 1911 and 1912 The 1910 plat map was also helpful showing
exactly where people lived. I may get ambitious and post a piece
of that map here at some point. Some of their nearest neighbors in
1911 would include the acres owned by Henry Goodenough, Dan
Smith, Frank Self. Harve and Inda Everett were right across the street.
Wenig, Ewing, Coen, LeGalley, Johnston, Thomas, Jewell, Armitage, and Householder families were
nearby.
Naomi Esther DeSelms Cox was a farm
wife and the mother of eight children in Wood Co in northwestern
Ohio. She frequently refers to John her husband, whom she calls
"Pa" and her five children living by 1911: Ethel Ewing (who lived in Toledo with her
husband Jim; Jim's parents lived very near Naomi and John
Cox), Johnny (and his wife Anna), Ralph (R.E.), Clyde (in dental school in Columbus) whose
girl friend and wife to be is Grace, and Jason who is preparing his own place up the
street, getting a home ready for his sweetheart Lorena. Naomi refers to her youngest
grandchild as "Babe". It is not unusual for some of the preschool
grandchildren to spend days with her during the school year.
Visits to and from the extended family in the area are
frequent. Elsewhere on these webpages is additional information
about these folks. Notice the blue links to findagrave, gutenberg,
and other web sites that may be of interest within this diary.
Italics are my added notes.
Monday, Jan. 1, 1912
I must begin spoiling the pages of another little diary given to
me by the two little boys (Glenn and
Donald
Ewing) Christmas.
I shall have to stop calling them that I suppose. I hope I may be
able to write something of interest this year. Clyde and Grace
went back to their schools this P.M. Ralph took them and staid up
for evening, Jason took Lorena home. Johnny's are still here or I
should be very lonesome.
Tuesday, Jan. 2, 1912
Pa went to School Board Meeting this afternoon and took the washing
up. The boys hauled fodder. Ralph got a letter from the Scarborough
Co. (a publisher of maps),
and he is going to start out tomorrow at his work. He and Johnny
went up to Lodge tonight. Anna and I got the house straitened and
swept up. Baby Zoe had quite a bad cold.
Wednesday, Jan. 3, 1912
Johnny went to Toledo this afternoon to see about the training and
about starting away. Ralph went out with his trainer Mr Murry and
did very well. Murry went on to Detroit. Jason had to go over and
help shred at Charlie Lundy's. Pa went to mill and went and seen the
Booster Car from the experiment station. Anna
did some Washing for Babe.
Thursday, Jan. 4, 1912
My! but this has been a bleak cold day. I was to have the Reading
Circle but no one would venture out. I don't blame them. I shouln't
either had it been any place else. Ralph went out alone today but
didn't have as good success as yesterday. Johnny started to Kansas
this morning. Jason had to help Bowers shred today and is very tired
tonight. Pa hauled manure and covered pipes etc.
Friday, Jan. 5, 1912
This has been another very cold day. The thermometer stood below
zero all day. Ralph didn't try to go out at all, he took Anna and
Babe up town this afternoon to visit round some before going home.
We didn't try to do much but sit a round the fire and work. Jason
went over to see Orley Withrow this P.M. I got a letter from
Ethel, they are getting along all right since they got home.
Saturday, Jan. 6, 1912
It is very cold again today and has been snowing a little all day
but it is so fine it doesn't amount to much. Pa and Jason went up
with the butter and Jason staid and Ralph drove up this evening and
they'll come home together. We got a letter from Clyde today. He
hasn't been feeling very well and is very busy besides. We were
going up to Grange but it was too stormy and cold.
Sunday, Jan. 7, 1912
It is still zero weather and the gas has been freezing up for us
both this morning and tonight. No one went to church it was too cold
for one thing and the gas bothered too much for another. Pa froze
his nose thawing up the gas this morning. Albert
Thomas was here awhile today. We had a chicken dinner with
biscuit dumplings.
Monday, Jan. 8, 1912
The Farmers Institute commenced in B.G. today and Pa went up and
brought hone a pump jack to fix the pumping rods. It has snowed
nearly all day, it stopped awhile this afternoon and Ralph and Jason
drove over to Togany and sold two Atlas's. I just did the usual work
and made a handkerchief. The gas is getting awfully weak again
tonight.
Tuesday, Jan. 9, 1912
The gas was gone again this morning and they have had to fuss with
it a good deal today and left a fire near the place where it freezes
the worse so it won't bother tonight for it is terrible cold and has
been all day way below zero and blowing a perfect blizzard and the
sun was shining most of the time while it was blowing and the snow
that fell yesterday in sheets through the air. All staid near the
fire today.
Wednesday, Jan. 10, 1912
It was rather nice today but still cold, and they had to pull out
the pump and fix the rods. Dan Smith came in this morning with the
petition for the stone road, Pa went to Harves and Ewings with him and they fixed the pump alone
and had to do it over. Harve and Dan went out this P.M. together.
The boys went uptown tonight, they didn't get to go out to canvass
any.
Thursday, Jan. 11, 1912
The boys both went out today of course Jason only went for company
but only sold one. I was sick all night nearly and didn't get up
till nearly noon but am feeling better today. Pa went down to Dan
Smiths tonight to talk stone-road but they haven't got enough
names yet. Florence Smith-Hill (Dan Smith's sister) was married today. The gas
nearly went off tonight and Jason and Harve went over and thawed it
up before going to bed.
Friday, Jan. 12, 1912
Ralph went up to Togany and around some on foot but only sold one.
Its too awful cold for the business, he went on over to B.G. and
came home with Jason. They got enough more names to insure the road
today and every one, on this road at least, feels pretty good over
it. Jason brought washing home this P.M. and its a very poor job
Will have to do some over. They got a new storm front
today.
Saturday, Jan. 13, 1912
My! but this has been a severe day the worst yet and we thought it
had been bad enough all along. it was 20 below in the morning and
never got up to ero all day, but it seems to be moderating a little
tonight. The gas bothered all forenoon too was clear off some of the
time as they had to blow out the pipes. Pa took the butter up alone.
We got a letter from Clyde he says it is just as cold there but they
have sleighing. He has lots of clinic work.
Sunday, Jan. 14, 1912
It had moderated a good deal this morning Only a few degrees below
zero and got warm enough so it could snow a little bit during the
day and tonight it is 8 above. Maybe we can have some snow after a
while, what came Monday all blew off the road. Pa and Ralph went up
to church, Ralph staid up a and will come home with Jason tonight.
Monday, Jan. 15, 1912
It snowed a little last night but all blew off in drifts and is real
cold again today, never got above zero all day. Ralph and Jason went
up to Haskins but found the bank had been closed up this A.M. so it
was rather a poor sight for business so came back home. Pa went over
to Togany to the Farmers Institute I did a little washing but
didn't go out much. Pa hung the clothes out for me and brought them
in. Johnny came over from Luckey this P.M.
Tuesday, Jan. 16, 1912
It is just awful cold again this morning down to 14 below zero but
warmed up though till it was about 7 above this P.M. but is down
again to 2 above. Johnny and R.E. went up town and John will go back
to Luckey and they will go on home to Napoleon tomorrow, he thinks
he will stay where he is for awhile yet but feels better satisfied
since he went. Elza, Laura
and the kiddies came over today and were here for dinner. She
brought my order over. Jason hauled two loads of corn to Togany.
Wednesday, Jan. 17, 1912
It has warmed up considerably and began snowing about 10 o'clock.
Jason hauled two loads of corn to Tontogany again Ralph went with
him and was going to stay and work but it went to storming so that
he came back. I did my ironing and ususal work. It stopped snowing
and has finally got to raining and is taking the snow off fast.
Thursday, Jan. 18, 1912 Toledo
Oh dear! what a day this has been, it was the day for the Reading
Circle to meet here as it was so cold two weeks ago they couldn't
come, and it has rained almost steady all day. This evening it has
turned a little colder and went to snowing real hard. Ralph and
Jason went down to Toledo this P.M. to the Automobile show and got
paper for the house down there.
Friday, Jan. 19, 1912
It has turned lots colder again and quite a bit of snow has fallen.
Pa went up and paid his taxes and was quite agreeably surprised at
the decrease in the amount to what is was last year, about 71 last
yr and 48 this yr. half tax.
Ralph and Jason commenced at the hosue, got some of the paper on
this afternoon, Jason had to go up this morning with Pa and get an
oil stove and oil for it, do use down there. I have made a start at
the rags.
Saturday, Jan. 20, 1912
It was awfully cold again this morning. The boys went down and tried
to hang paper, but it would freeze the paste so they had to let it
get warmed up a little with the oil-stove but they got the paper all
on today Pa and I went up town with the butter and did
some trading, lost my muff again I don't suppose I'll be as luckey
as I was before and find it again. It snowed quite hard again this
P.M.
Sunday, Jan. 21, 1912
This has been a real nice day but a little cold. Pa went to Ethels
and will tend the Dedication of the new church. Jason went up and
brought Lorena and her sister Mrs. Roberts out this afternoon and we had a
nice visit. After supper we went down to the house to inspect the
boys work. Ralph went up town with Jason this P.M. and staid up,
after he had done the chores Jason took the girls back.
Monday, Jan. 22, 1912
Pa got home this evening on the 5:44 and reported having a very nice
visit, he and Ethel went down to Rose's and Eva's. Ralph went out
but had no success again it was stormy part of the time, he visited
awhile with Em (Dower) Opperman
(daughter of Jacob and Anna Brand
Dauer). Jason helped Harve butcher then went up town with
him. I did quite a good deal in the rags Colored the black and tore
a lot. Jason sewed a large black ball tonight.
Tuesday, Jan. 23, 1912
Ralph made a beginning in Weston today and did well Sold 7 atlas's,
came back to B.G. to lodge, then on hom. Jason hauled one load of
corn to Togany and had trouble with the wheel coming off so stopped
for a few days It is 83 cents now. I am working in the rags. Am
getting along quite well Jason sewed another large ball and some
besides tonight.
Wednesday, Jan. 24, 1912
Pa took the little team over and had them shod and Jason hauled out
maure. I colored red and a dark red or a sort of wine color today
and tore a lot more I color before we sew them this time to save
bothering with them so much. Jason went up town tonight, and Ralph
came home with him, he was over to Weston again but didn't do
anything there. Was a funeral and he wasn't feeling very good
anyway.
Thursday, Jan. 25, 1912
Jason hauled two loads of corn in Harves place for John Opperman to Sugar Ridge. I didn't color
any today but tore a lot and Jason and I sewed tonight, Pa sewed
some on the machine this P.M. It snowed quite a little, Ralph didn't
go out but went up town tonight and got in a little mix up with the
horse, Mable, I got a card from Grace, she has got all over
her tonsilitis again.
Friday, Jan. 26, 1912
I colored my blue and yellow feel rather disappointed with the blue,
wish I had taken the old way instead of the patent dyes. Jason
helped Harve again today Dora came up awhile this afternoon. Ralph
didn't go out He isn't feeling very good. Pa took up some chickens
31 all roosters at 10 cents They brought $19.50 It has
snowed about all day some of the time quite hard.
Saturday, Jan. 27, 1912
Ralph is about laid up with the Rheumatism in one knee. Jason went
up town with the sleigh this P.M. It goes quite well now. Pa went up
in the buggy with the butter. I colored my green then cleaned up the
house baked pies and cake.
Sunday, Jan. 28, 1912
It seemed rather pleasant this A.M. and Pa went to church but he had
hardly got home when it commenced to sleet and then rained most all
afternoon but it froze as it fell so it made a crust instead of
taking the snow off. the boys both went up town tonight.
Monday, Jan. 29, 1912
It still looked stormy this morning and so vey icy that Ralph didn't
go out. He is reading "The
Crossing" now. Pa and Jason went over and got the wagon fixed
this A.M. then down to Elza's
and got the buff roosters this P.M. Dora came up and helped me sew rags as John
hadn't come home yet and it was rather lonesome alone, we sewed
quite a nice lot.
Tuesday, Jan. 30, 1912
It snowed again this morning and R.E. staid at home. They all three
went up town this P.M. in the sled to mill got chop. R.E. staid up
to Lodge, Pa went over to the C.H. where they were counting the
names on the ditch. Jason ordered his suit and R.E. bought a new
one. Dora came up again and helped me sew rags We got
letters from Ethel and Clyde.
Wednesday, Jan. 31, 1912
It was a lovely morning this morning and Ralph went over to Weston
to work the rest of the wk. or Fri. night. Jason helped Harve all
day. Pa took Ralph to Togany to take the car and was round
home the rest of the day. I met with quite a little accident this
afternoon I slipped on the ice and sprained or hurt my foot some way
so it is all swollen tonight and quite painful.
Thursday, Feb. 1, 1912
This has been another bad snowy day but as it was the day for the
Ladies Meeting again they wouldn't disappoint me the 3rd time but
came all together in a big bob-sled except Mrs Johnston and Dora who came in a buggy. My foot is getting
along nicely much better than I expected last night. It was so
stormy Ralph came back today He did very well sold flour.
Friday, Feb. 2, 1912
It was nice but cold today Snowed a little this afternoon. I didn't
do much but write letters this A.M. We churned got the butter ready
and baked pies and cookeys. My foot doesn't hurt me any to walk but
is swelled quite bad at night.
Saturday, Feb. 3, 1912
It is awful cold today It was 14 below zero this A.M. but got
up to zero before we went to town, I went with Pa today and did a
little more trading. The boys both went to Toledo, Ralph this
forenoon and came back tonight and Jason this P.M. and staid all the
night. It snowed a bit this P.M.
Sunday, Feb. 4, 1912
My but it has been a cold day it was down 16 below z. this morning
and never got nearer than 4 below all day and tried to snow some
besides. No one tried to go away any place but Ralph kept close
round the fire, just Pa Ralph and I. They read some and slept some
and I wrote up some of the answers to my pictures Jason came home
with Orley W. from Toledo and staid with him all
night.
Monday, Feb. 5, 1912
This has been quite a nice day but quite cold but got to snowing
hard for awhile this P.M. I washed quite a large washing had to do
over some the wash woman did, I have got almost discouraged with
sending it away as long as they can help me some with it I'll try to
get along with it. I sewed some rags after I got through. Ralph and
Jason were over to Harves all P.M.
Tuesday, Feb. 6, 1912
Jason hauled two loads of corn to Togany it has got to 90c
now, then he went down to Toledo to Orley's shower and Ralph went up
town, I took them to the car and thought I'd freeze coming back I've
been out so little this winter I feel the cold so and I went in the
sleigh the first sleigh ride I've had. Dora was up a little while. I
baked and ironed. We got a letter from John he says Mrs Bolander is going to get along. He is
staying alone again.
Wednesday, Feb. 7, 1912
We churned and did the usual work and I sewed rags I have the
rags ready to send away as soon as I can find a weaver to send them
too, but I will keep on at the hit and miss til I send them away, I
sewed 1 1/2 lbs. Jason didn't get home till this A.M. so only took
one load of corn. It has been another bad snowy day. Ralph hasn't
tried to go out any this week it has been so bad.
Thursday, Feb. 8, 1912
This has been a very nice day and Ralph went up to Weston to work
but didn't do anything as there was a sale and the men all gone.
Jason hauled 3 laods of corn, finished his own up. It had dropped to
.88 but they marked his 90¢. He stopped and saw a woman about
weaving the carpet, I sewed rags all day, we got a letter from
Clyde. Pa has been thawing up gas- it has been weak all day.
Friday, Feb. 9, 1912
Pa and Harve have been working with the gas again trying to thaw but
I guess it will have to continue on in its weak state till it gets to
be warmer. It was awful cold again this morning and Ralph didn't go
out to try to do anything but went to Weston with the lodge team at
night. Jason had to go up to see if his suit was all O.K. and get
it, so didn't haul any corn till this P.M. one load. Then he and
Ralph went up town tonight.
Saturday, Feb 10, 1912
Well this was the coldest morning we've had, our thermometer
registered 21 below and the gas nearly all gone, but thank goodness
we have coal for the kitchen stove and by turning it all off from
the other stoves we had enough for the sitting room. Harve was sick
this morning and Jason had to do his chores then hauled corn and
finished the day and R.E. hauled a load for Pa and went up to
Johnny's this P.M. when Pa took the butter up.
Sunday, Feb. 11, 1912
This has been quite a good day but we couldn't get round to go to
church so went up to Manson's for dinner Had a dandy dinner,
his mouth is getting better where he hurt it on the clothes-line.
Jason staid alone till the middle of the afternoon then went up to
town. It is snowing hard tonight.
Monday, Feb. 12, 1912
This has been another cold day such steady cold is causing things to
freeze so bad the cistern pump has stopped now and the line between
the tanks. Jason worked for Harve today hauled two loads of corn to
Togany. Pa and I went over and saw the weaver Mrs Merck, and on to Togany this P.M. We went
in the sleigh and was rather a cold ride coming back. I got a nice
card from Grace.
Tuesday, Feb. 13, 1912
It isn't quite so cold today, we took the rags over to the weaver.
Nora Ewing (Allen Ewing's wife,
nee Nora Knauss, daughter of Gilbert and Frances Grover Knauss)
let me come in ahead of her for one piece then leave the rest till
hers is all woven. I went over to Russels and phoned to her. Jason
worked for Harve again all day, and went up town tonight. I am
tearing some more hit and miss. We got a type-written letter from
Clyde.
Wednesday, Feb. 14, 1912
We washed and churned today then sewed a ball of H & M rags, I
have a great basket-full again after I had them about all sewed up.
Dora was here awhile. Jason worked for Harve again hauled two loads
to Togany. It has come off real pleasant at last, the thermometer
getting as high as 22 above, only hope it will stay warmer now. I
got a Valentine card from Dottie (Naomi's
sister Nancy's daughter Dottie Miller).
Thursday, Feb. 15, 1912
This has been another quite pleasant day tho it begins to look a
little stormy. I went over to Blanch LeGalley's to Ladies Meeting on a load
of oats with Pa. I also ironed and sewed some rags. Jason worked for
Harve again.
Friday, Feb. 16, 1912
I put in the morning writing to Ethel, Clyde and a card to Grace
then had to get the butter ready, and churn and bake bread. Pa and
Jason went up town this P.M. and got the gas fixtures for the little
house. Ralph came home from Johnny tonight and says he and John had
a fine time all by themselves, but had taken quite a bad cold. A
letter from Ethel says Donald is under the Dr's care.
Saturday, Feb. 17, 1912
This has been a lovely day but rather a busy one. I got my butter
ready and baked pies and fruit cake this A.M. then went to town with
Pa this P.M. then as we got a card from Mrs. Merck we went over
there and got the carpet or rug she had woven and went on over to
the store and drugstore awhile. Ralph and Jason worked at the gas
connection at the house this P.M. and went to B.G. this evening.
Sunday, Feb. 18, 1912
This has been a nice warm day, the snow is leaving very fast. Ralph
and Pa went up to church and S.S. Jason went up and brought Lorena
out and took her back this evening. R.E. went up this P.M.
Monday, Feb. 19, 1912 Toledo,
O.
I got my work in shape and came down to Ethels today or this evening
rather, I found them all feeling pretty well only some colds, the
snow is going off very nicely without any reain. Ralph started out
this morning to try to do something at his work.
Tuesday, Feb. 20, 1912 Toledo
Ethel left the little ones with Laura (Gunlite, a neighbor) and she and I went over town
and did a whole lot of running round and got back about two-thirty I
guess and did quite a lot of work I baked cookeys she ironed and
between us we rendered out the lard she had got. I got me a suit and
silk for a waist and she wants to help me get it started in the A.M.
Wednesday, Feb. 21, 1912 Toledo
Well the weather changed in the night last night and we are in the
clutches of one of the worst storms we have had for 12 years up to
noon it had snowed about 11 inches and it had drifted up the roads
car lines and everything so it is just terrible there will be no
going home till it is over I tried to phone but couldn't get them.
Ethel got my waist pretty well along.
Thursday, Feb. 22, 1912 Toledo
Well today isn't much better than yesterday but it doesn't blow so
hard so it does a little good to clear the tracks. The interurban
cars got to running at 9 tonight so I begin to dream of "Home Sweet
Home" It is a sight to watch the people trying to get round
through the drifts. I never got caught in such a predicament before
and I have so much to do at home but Ethel got my waist done. Dorothy Cox was married today.
Friday, Feb. 23, 1912
Well it began to look quite a good deal better this A.M. but quite
cold yet and Ethel went over town with me got my suit, they had to
change it some, and did some other trading then she went back home
and I got the 11:20 Limited and came to B..G. and phoned Pa came
after me but didn't get here til 5 P.M. Ralph had gone to Uncle Charlie's. The streets are a fright
banked as high as my head with snow.
Saturday, Feb. 24, 1912
Johnny phoned this A.M. and said that Babe was very sick and had
phoned for Shroeder and the Dr. told us this evening that it was
Typhoid it is too bad and they are down at Luckey too. Jason got his
gas all connected up today and took some back he didn't need and
brought Lorena for a little while this evening and took home after
supper.
Sunday, Feb. 25, 1912
Pa and I went down to Luckey to see Little Zoe she is awful sick but
seems to be a little better this P.M. She seemed to rest quite well,
and her fever was some lower. They have a good nurse I guess and
hope she is going to get along now, it is a long ride there and back
and we are awful tired. Jason done up the chores and was gone when
we got home.
Monday, Feb. 26, 1912
well I have a busy week before me now as I was away all last week. I
went down and helped Jason clean up his house this forenoon and they
had to hitch up the sled for it is thawing so fast the waster is
running over the road so. I sewed on the big rug this P.M. Jason
went up with the big rig and brought a tub and boiler full of dishes
and things tonight.
Tuesday, Feb. 27, 1912
This is the day of all day to Jason and Lorena, they were married at
noon then took the train at one for Hillsdale Mich. I did a large
washing then Pa and I went up town to a doings at the church called
a winter picnic. I was very tired though. They delivered Jasons
goods today as they was afraid it was going to break up, but it is
getting colder. Johnny phoned that Babe is getting on fairly well.
Wednesday, Feb. 28, 1912
I let my ironing go and worked on the rug, it is one awful lot of
sewing, Dora came up and helped me this P.M. Pa went up to the mill
this afternoon. It has turned quite a good deal colder and snows
some. Mrs Roberts phoned tonight that she would come out tomorrow
and help straiten up Jasons house.
Thursday, Feb. 29, 1912
Mrs. Roberts came on the 9:16 car Pa met her and we went down to the
house after an early dinner, and got the things placed round in the
different rooms and the two rugs laid down and shades put up , then
came back and sewed awhile on the curtains etc. She had to go back
tonight. They missed the caqr and Pa took her clear to town. R.E.
came home tonight.
Friday, March 1, 1912
This has been quite a busy day, Gene (Gene
Abbot Roberts, Lorena's sister) came down again I sewed
till midnight on the rug and till noon today it didn't go together
good. Johnny came over from Luckey he says Babe is getting along as
well as she can and think they can let the nurse go tomorrow. After
dinner we all went down to the house, put down the rag rug and
filling of green denim down stairs and hung the curtains she staid
all night, we churned.
Saturday, March 2, 1912
There was S.B. meeting and Pa took Gene home when he took the butter up, I
got the butter off then did my ironing in the afternoon but I am
awful tired tonight. Ralph and Gene are planning a surprise on Jason
and Lorena for Mon. night. We got a card today saying they would be
at home then.
Sunday, March 3, 1912
There is an awful cold East wind today and I gave up going to
church but Pa went and staid up to Manson's till evening. India Everett got her
clothes afire this A.M. when she was dressing and got her hand
burned real badly, I went over for awhile this afternoon.
Monday, March 4, 1912
My but this has been a busy hard day all right, it was so cold and
the gas so scarce they had to go and get a coal stove to put in
Jasons house. The surprise was a success all right, they were here
till 8:30 Manson and Em and Laura and Elza and Harve and Inda were here to supper then they went and
found their house full ready to meet them. They got quite a number
of presents. I'm about all in tonight.
Tuesday, March 5, 1912
Jason and Lorena staid in their own little house which was all ready
for them but came down for breakfast after that Ralph and Gene both
went down and helped them straighten up the house then in P.M. they
took her home and got a few more things they needed and went to
keeping house in earnest. Dora staid here and Jack went with Ralph
to the Lodge tonight, we went down to Jason's a little while.
Wednesday, March 6, 1912
Ralph got part of his Atlas and delivered them round Tontogany. It
has been quite a nice day. I put on a comforter this forenoon. Jason
and Lorena came in P.M. and we got it all off and Ralph went
down there and took it to them this evening.
Thursday, March 7, 1912
This has been a very
nice day and we
butchered and got the lard all rendered but I feel uneasy about it
as it got to raining before we got it strained and it got a little

seems rather lonesome. It is the first we've been alone, Pa and I,

go over to the Farmers picnic tomorrow. Lorena went to Col this
morning, Jason helped Joe stack oats and Pa helped Opperman thresh.
It is quite cool and nice today.
August 28, 1912 Wednesday
Well I guess the Farmer picnic must have been a fizzle as the
weather was a drizzle and more than that it has rained awful hard
sometimes, we were going as were most of the neighbors. Pa hauled
one load of corn for Jason while he pained on his buggy. "Buckskin"
Householder and Munn had a fight and Munn was arrested. I spent the
day mending etc.

canned some pears, Lorena did the same and baked bread besides. The
threshing machines are getting so thick they can hardly get help,
Jason is over to Gustins with the team and Pa is up to Coens this PM. I got a letter from Johns
telling about the flood caused by a cloud-burst that wiped out a
town on a hill-side.
September 6, 1912 Friday
They are still threshing they are both at Johnstons today. Pa got
home to do the chores but Jason didn't come till 9:00 o'c
Lorena came up and staid till he came. It is just awful hot
again today we can hardly work but have to keep doing. It registers
90° today and schools just commenced, it makes it hard on the
youngsters but the Toledo school wait till next wk. I am glad of
it.It's been a bad week for butter.
September 7, 1912 Saturday
Well it's about 20° cooler than it was yesterday so one can work in
some comfort. I had lots to do this A.M. finishing up what I
couldn't get done yesterday, then I went up town with Pa this P.M.
It was awful late tho for he helped Jason to bunch up the hungarian
hay before we went we saw Mr. Eberly and they will be out next week.
Clyde came home tonight and reports a vey dull week perhaps owing to
the hot weather.
September 8, 1912 Sunday

ready. Orley's came over to Jasons for dinner and
spend the day eating melons and such. Clyde went up town tonight.

had to stop often. Dora came up and got some tomatoes,

Its quite a bit cooler today. Will Eberly and wife came out and we had a very nice visit
after the surprise wore off a little we were expecting them
one day but expected them to phone the night before. Lorena's
company came and she went to meet her at the car Laura (Wallace)

town. Pa didn't go to church and we have been alone all day resting
and reading.
September 16, 1912 Monday
This has been a very nice cool day and I have improved it by washing
and ironing and churning and I feel pretty tired. Jason went up to
help Orrin T. fill the silo and they had a break
down and didn't get there so he came back and they cut corn.
September 17, 1912 Tuesday
The shredders came to Harves this P.M. and they filled silo although
it rained nearly all afternoon. I baked and fussed round and got
ready for them tomorrow. Lorena baked my cake and will help. It has
been a very cold disagreeable drizzling rain but they worked all
through it and were wet and some one will be sick from it no doubt.

This has been a very nice day but a very busy one for me. John Wickham and wife and a man from Blissfield and Manson were here for dinner, and Mr. and Mrs.
Si Johnston brought Mary Kelly
(John Wickham's twin sister) over a little later the rest
went back but she staid for awhile. Mr Chamberlain picked up the
apples and went to the cidermill.
October 29, 1912 Tuesday
It hasn't been near so nice as it was yesterday been rather a cold
windy day and has clouded up and raining a little tonight. I havn't
done much but usual work but baked bread and churned. Mary K. was here and we visited a good deal.
Jason hauled beets and she did a two weeks washing. Pa finished
digging potatoes. We got a letter from Ethel She is well as usual
but rather lonesome I guess.
October 30, 1912 Wednesday
Pa took Mary Kelly up to Wrights this morning and Em came out and helped make the applebutter we
made about 10 gal and it is real nice, it has been nice weather to
be out didn't rain to amount to anything last night. Jason hauled
beets but won't have to haul much longer.
October 31, 1912 Thursday
I havn't done much but rest today and tended to the churning. I have
felt awful tired all day, Em staid all night it was so late when we
got thru with the apple butter last night. Dora had the Reading
Circle at her house this P.M. then was up here awhile afterwards.
India is getting along better now.
November 1, 1912 Friday
It rained most all night last night, Jason was going up to haul dirt
for Floyd but couldn't after the rain, but they both went up for
supper tonight as Will Roberts is going away to Okla. tomorrow.
The men husked corn today. I did my washing but it was real cold and
windy and I did some of the ironing.
November 2, 1912 Saturday
We had to churn and get the butter off to town, it was school-board
meeting, Lorena went up with Pa and did some trading. Jason was
helping Bowers to shred fodder. After I got the butter
off I baked pies and cookies and finished ironing and am quite tired
tonight Pa went up town to a speech. Jason and Lorena ate
supper here and staid awhile. This must be our squaw winter. It is snowing and awful
disagreeable.
November 3, 1912 Sunday
My! but it was cold last night froze quite hard about an inch in the
chicken crock. Pa went up to church and S.S. Mr. and Mrs Reider came out this afternoon. The
children have been a little fussy today, they want to get out so bad
but it was a little cold till this P.M. I let Babe out for awhile,
Don could go of course. I took the children and went over to see
India, she is getting along quite well now, is up and around.
November 4, 1912 Monday
Pa had got to husking when Bowers phoned over for him to come and help
them shred. Jason and Lorena went up to Floyds he was going to help
him to haul dirt today, Gene came home with them to stay awhile. I
cleaned upstairs and sewed some.
November 5, 1912 Tuesday
This was Election day and an ideal day it has been. Nice all day
till toward night it began to grow rather hazy and warm and rained a
little tonight. Pa and Jason went and voted this forenoon and husked
this P.M. I baked, tended the churning and cleaned our bedroom.
Lorena and Gene came up awhile. The children had a good time playing
outdoors today.
November 6, 1912 Wednesday
My! but this has been a bad rainy day commenced this morning and
kept it up, didn't rain much in the night, they couldn't do anything
but the chores. Jason went over and had the horses shod. I didn't
feel so very good this morning so didn't do much but got my
table-cloth ready to hemstitch and worked at my tatting a little.
The children were awful good for having to be kept indoors.
November 7, 1912 Thursday
I did a large washing and churned and did some of he ironing
it was just awful windy and cold and snowed just a little.
November 8, 1912 Friday
I took it into my head to go down to Ethels today and took the
children to see her, had rather a long hard day of it but got back
all right on the 4:16, it was quite a pleasant surprise to her, they
enjoyed the day very much and was willing to come back. Gene went
back to Portage tonight on the same car we came home on.
November 9, 1912 Saturday
This has been a very busy day by going awy yesterdy, Manson came
down and husked this A.M. He also took some walnuts home. Lorena was
up this P.M. a little while to show me a quilt she had been making.
Clyde came home tonight he is making a good start.
November 10, 1912 Sunday
No one went to Church today but Ralph came down this P.M. and he and
Clyde went back up town tonight.
November 11, 1912 Monday
I did a large washing today. Jason phoned for Gene to come back as
Lorena is feeling very badly today and she came on the 1:16 car, she
was better this P.M. but is worse this evening again.
November 12, 1912 Tuesday
Well I was up all night and am feeling pretty bummy tonight. Jasons
had a little boy come to them this morning about
3:30 and as it is premature about six weeks it is a very little,
weak little mite of a baby and they have to be very careful with it
in order to get it started. Laura and little ones came down this afternoon
for a while. Johnnies folks came tonight, they were all surprised as
well as ourselves.
November 13, 1912 Wednesday
Anna insisted that I go up and get my comforter cloth and batting so
she could help me while she was here so Pa and I went up this P.M.
and got that, and linoleum for the kitchen, she kept the children
and did the work. Ralph came out for dinner and he and Johnny helped
husk awhile then he went back and John to Toledo, they stopped to
see the baby. A little girl was born to Ethel and Jim this
evening.
November 14, 1912 Thursday
Anna and I got the comforts this morning and got one tied for me,
and Gene came up this P.M. and we tied one for Lorena too. I joined
another one for myself tonight. They are getting along very
nicely at Jasons. Ralph phoned that Johnny had got a job at the
Overland works and had gone to Napoleon to have his goods shipped
down.
November 15, 1912 Friday
Well we put on and tied another comforter for myself and went
down and Lorena's other one and a little one and got it tied
off then got the large one but the top wasn't large enough and her mother took it back and put some more on
then came back and we tied it off after supper. Johnny came back
tonight his goods has got to Toledo. The baby isn't doing so well as
it did.
November 16, 1912 Saturday
Johnnys folks went to Toledo this morning on the 7:16 to get their
goods moved into their house and settled soon as possible so he can
go to work Mon. morning. This has been a busy day for me after
sticking to the comforts so close and leaving eveything we had to
churn twice and get the butter all ready.
November 17, 1912 Sunday
Well the great cornerstone laying was today and Pa went up and staid
to Reiders for dinner and went in the afternoon
again the kiddies and I staid at home I went down to Jasons in the
morning then we were at home the rest of the day. The baby doesn't
do very well and the Dr. was out today and said they must try
condensed milk for awhile and keep hers drawn out till it is better
for it.
November 18, 1912 Monday
This has been a lovely day. Mrs. Wilson had a husking bee. Jason
went in the forenoon. Andrew Opperman (brother of Adolph and John) came from this evening to help husk. We expected the
shredders tomorrow morning but they have taken in another job and
they won't get here till night or next day. I washed and tended the
churning and baked a cake.
November 19, 1912 Tuesday
The shreders came this P.M. and worked two or three hours and were
here for supper. Gene came up and helped me after taking her folks
to the car. It is nice to he (sic) out and the kiddies enjoy
watching them. The men husked up on Jasons till the machine came.
November 20, 1912 Wednesday
They finished shreding about 3 oclock there were four here over
night including Andrew. Gene helped me again. After they had gone, I
did up the washing they made while here, and am pretty tired
tonight.
November 21, 1912 Thursday
I feel awful tired and good for nothing but managed to do quite a
lot of ironing it seems the work is getting ahead of me so its hard
to catch up. I've had so much to do I've gotten behind.
November 22, 1912 Friday
I finally got my ironing all done up this A.M. a part of two weeks
besides all of this wk. then this afternoon I did some cleaning, the
little bedroom and washed six windows and am awful tired tonight,
Mrs. Ross and Mrs LeGalley came over to see Lorena and baby. I
dressed a chicken to send up to the church supper but they didn't
come after it. Their fall festival is going on right now.
November 23, 1912 Saturday
It seems I am nearly done up today I can hardly do anything and
there is so much to do. I had all my butter to work up and a
churning to do, baked bread and buns and pumpkin pies and sent two
up to the supper besides a crock of cheese. Manson came out and helped to husk so I had
him and Andrew to cook for besides ourselves.
November 24, 1912 Sunday
We went down to Ethels today and took the kiddies to stay for awhile
but the baby would like to have come back with us. We went over to
Clydes awhile then over to John's they have got nicely fixed up they
were looking for us before we started home, R.E. was there and Clyde
went over we got home about 10:00 oclock from B.G. The rig was
waiting there for us. Harry and Floyds (Lorena's brothers) were at Jasons today.
November 25, 1912 Monday
This has been a cold windy day I washed and the clothes froze on the
line. I took up the old kitchen carpet and scrubbed it the floor
after I got thru washing. I washed and pinned down the curtains, and
went down to see Lorena and baby a little while this P.M. She is
getting along quite well but the babe doesn't do well yet just lays
and sleeps only when they rouse it. They finished husking Jason's
standing corn. Manson drove in for dinner. Andrew didn't come back.
November 26, 1912 Tuesday
We got the linoleum laid and stove movd back against the wall and it
is so much nicer I have been awwful busy. I ironed this A.M. before
we had to turn off the gas. Andrew came back today they finished the
standing corn at home and husked some shocks on Jasons. Andrew
dragged down stalks this P.M. and Jason helped us some. I got a
letter from Grace she will be here tomorrow night.
November 27, 1912 Wednesday

think it is getting warmer Pa went up to meet Grace and
Clyde, Clyde came down on the car in the evening and was there when
her train came in, they drove the buggy home and Pa and Ralph came
on the car. Andrew helped J.J. this P.M. then went home for good after
getting his pay. I have been very busy straitning things after our
work yesterday, and baking and dressed turkey.
November 28, 1912 Thursday
Well another Thanksgiving has gone by. John and Anna came and Jason
brought Lorena up in the buggy to eat dinner, so they were all here
but Ethel's family, Zoe and baby Hugh Mrs. Abbott
stayed and took care of him and we sent her Thanksgiving dinner down
to her. John and Anna and Ralph had to go back tonight to go to work
in the morning. Clyde and Grace went up town tonight.
November 29, 1912 Friday
Clyde and Grace went to Toledo this morning. We got a letter from
Ethel saying her girl refused to stay after the kiddies came back so
Pa went down to bring them, or at least the baby back till she was a
little stronger but she wouldn't let them come. I went to the car to
meet him and felt rather bad because she didn't come I could have
cried. I was so sorry we took them down then. I went down to Jasons
this P.M. Belle came (Lorena's
sister Belle Achtermann).
November 30, 1912 Saturday
I went up town with Pa this afternoon. It was such a nice day. They
butchered a pig at noon. Pa helped John Johnston husk this A.M.
Jason is plowing now on Goodenough's

December 1, 1912 Sunday

been visiting since they went down Fri. morning. We all went down to

for the baby. The men are still husking on Jasons.
December 5, 1912 Thursday
