Farm Life in Plain Township, Wood
county, Ohio, continued
Naomi DeSelms Cox born in Ohio October 19,
1855. She is 66 years old as 1922 begins.
Her diaries from 1911-1938, still in existence, after spending a
number of decades in the attic closet of her son Clyde,
are transcribed on these web
pages.
She married John Hughes Cox
in Wood Co OH 27 April 1879. She referred to him in the diary as
"Pa".
In the spring of 1918 she and "Pa" moved from the farm on Hannah
Road
into the town of Bowling Green to 627 Wallace Avenue. They still
owned
the
farm and son Jason and his family lived there and worked the farm,
Pa
frequently helping. As 1921 ends they are trying to sell the house
on
Wallace and buy the Collier place back in Plain township.
The old farm that
Jason is working now, is located in the north part of
Plain Township in Wood county on Hannah Road. The
acreage
north of them was Middleton Township. Some of the nearest
neighbors
included the farms of Henry Goodenough, Dan
Smith, Frank Self.
Harve and Inda Everett were across the street. Wenig, Ewing,
Coen, LeGalley, Thomas, Armitage, and Householder families were
nearby.
Naomi Esther DeSelms Cox
was a farm wife and the mother of eight children in Wood
Co in
northwestern
Ohio.
She frequently refers to John
her husband, whom she calls "Pa" and her five children:
Ethel
(living in Toledo with husband Jim Ewing;
their children: Hazel the oldest grandchild, Glenn, Donald, Dorothy, Doris, Ralph, and Wesley who was born in 1920.
(Jim's parents- Mr and Mrs Wesley Ewing, lived very near
Naomi and John Cox's farm on Hannah Road),
On Feb 1 1919 Hazel Ewing married Harold Shearer and on 23 Dec 1919
their son Albert was born, the first great
grandchild.
Johnny and
his wife Anna whose
parents lived in Luckey, living in Bowling Green- their little
girl was Zoe. and baby Dwight.
Ralph
(R.E.) newly married to Mayme (aka M.E. in the diary)
as 1919 begins and on a trip to New York and Pennsylvania.
Mayme was the mother of three sons: Cortland, Clifford and Albert Nelson who were 21, 17 and 15
respectively, as 1921 began. They live and farm in Liberty
township.
Clyde
or"C.H." with his dental practice in Toledo and wife Grace, and
John and Helen and Clyde jr (aka Junior) who was born in
1920. Grace's parents are Emma and John Jones.
Jason and
his wife Lorena Abbott Cox who farm in Wood county
and their son Hugh or Hughie- never a well child. In 1920 Robert Carl "Bobbie" was born. You can see
4 babies were born in this immediate Cox family in 1920 and that
doesn't include Elza and Laura's Ralph!

up and brought some presents. Johns folks sent up outing for a gown
from
them, a pair of stockings from children, box of candy and $5. for
Pa.

Presbyterians held their services with the U.B.'s this morning and
the
Elks came in a body too. Jim came to see his mother. Stopped at Jasons.
Mon. January 9, 1922

little this A.M. I am working on a silk pieced cusion top. Bobbie hasn't been very well last night and
today.

It
has been cloudy and colder. Snow flew a little. I've been getting my
proverb contest answers off. Will mail them in the morning. I wrote
to
Ethel too.
Fri. January 13, 1922
It has been quite stormy,
snowed last night and most of today. Jason phoned that little Bobby
was
feeling quite badly again and they had the Dr. over to see him. His
stomach is a little out of order. A letter from Ethel. They have
colds.
Sat. January 14, 1922
This
was the coldest morning we've had- down close to Zero but warmed up
quite fast up to 40 tonight. Ralph and Mayme have been this eveing.
Bobbie isn't feeling much better yet. Hughie is feeling first rate.
Sun. January 15, 1922
Pa
isn't feeling so very good but went to Church. Hughie is here with
us
yet. Bobby is some better today. Clydes folks were down this
afternoon
awhile. Junior is feeling better. They must be careful about his
eating.
Mon. January 16, 1922
It has been pretty cold to 5 above this A.M. but has got up to 20
tonight. Bobby is getting along quite well but Grandma hasn't got back yet so we still have
Hughie. Jason hauled corn today .61 cts. Ralph phoned they'll
butcher tomorrow.
Tues. January 17, 1922
It has been a very lovely day. Pa went out and helped Ralphs
butcher. They sent back a nice lot of meat. We got word today that Aunt Cecilia was very low, not expected to
live. Pa will got out tomorrow to see them. George was over.
Wed. January 18, 1922
Pa
went to Toledo and found Aunt Cillia some easier but no hope of her
recovery. He saw each of our children- they are all well. It has
been a
very dark gloomy day, foggy, snowing tonight. Hughie's stomach is
out
of order- throws up so. Letter from Nan, she would be at Dot's Tuesday evening.
Thurs. January 19, 1922
It
snowed enough on the ice to make it bad going. Jason brought Bobbie
and
came up. He is getting along but is fussy and Rena isn't very well.
Hughie was pleased to see them but didn't cry after them. Pa and
Mrs.
Conklin went down to see Thompson but he was gone. Down to 16 above
tonight. Hughie is better.
Fri. January 20, 1922
Pa payed his
taxes this A.M. $84 half tax- a little less than last year. The St.
extra is off now. Ralph came up to mill, had to wait and came over
to
dinner. It is warmer than yesterday 28 tonight. Hughie threw up
again
tonight. Pa went over to Chisms. They're going to make out the deed
tomorrow.
Sat. January 21, 1922

man. They had quite a time. Finished P.M. Jason came and got Hughie

Ralph and Mayme and we went
down to see Aunt Cilla. They brought some dinner. I had dinner about
ready and they brought some nice roast port, fig-pudding and cake
and
we ate our dinner here early before going. We found her some better.
Had an awful time getting home. Had to have Jason come pull us in.
We
ate supper at Johns. Started 9-30. Got here 12-30. Jason got out of
bed
to come after us.
Mon. January 23, 1922
Ralph is most sick
from getting chilled last night, so bad had to run round so much to
find a phone to call Jason, and had no overshoes or cap. Jason towed
us
and another car tht had froze up with his little car. It has got
awful
cold, to Zero this A.M. Got up to 11 at noon.
Tues. January 24, 1922
Below
Zero this A.M. but got as high as 11 again. We took care of the
heads
Ralph brought us- made some sausage and a little head cheese, fried
down a gal. of sausage. They got R.E.'s car fixed at the garage.
Went
to try it out and got run into. Broke the door and running board-
had
to replace them. Ralph is all right went to a sale says cows went
very
low and everything did.
Wed. January 25, 1922
It has been
close to Zero since Mon. morning but this morning it was 11 below.
Got
up high as 18 now at 9 o'clock its 9 above. How I hope it will warm
up.
We are having trouble with the pipes in the bathroom today leaking
on
the bedroom paper. Insleys (probably
their neighbors, J W and Blanch' household) had a fire
scare and another this P.M. Jason
was in awhile this afternoon.
Thurs. January 26, 1922
It is a
little warmer so I washed this P.M. and hung most all up
stairs
put out the larger pieces and will leave them out. We had to get a
plumber to thaw up the pipe and had to spoil the paper in our
bedroom
so we'll have to paper it. Too bad. It was nice.
Fri. January 27, 1922
Ralph
and Mayme came, he went over to the Jersey club meeting and she
staid.

Glenn has a cold. Ralph and Mayme got a 350 egg incubator.
Sat. February 4, 1922
I'm
afraid our woman is no go. Her husband thinks it is too far out of
town. He is an oil man. Mayme and Ralph were in. She went over and
took
Mrs. Kidds measure to make a dress. I went
over to Mrs. Spencers

get
a buyer soon so we'd know what to do. Pa is still helping in the

Thurs. March 23, 1922
I
washed and ironed quite a little bit. Pa and I went over to look at

most all day but let up this evening and we went to see Henriette
Bense. Ralph and Mayme came down to see Hughie and came and ate
dinner
with us. Hughie looks so bad and is very bad yet. I commenced my new
Xmas book. "Her Father's Daughter" Clydes gave me.
Note: Odds are that there are
a few bad links, mistakes, etc, here. Please let me know if you
catch any, or if
you would like to see some additional links, let me know.
Finally
figured out that Roy Johnson is Leroy Johnson son of Cyrus and
Angeline Johnson, but haven't caught up with all the links in
earlier
years, and haven't found what became of Leroy to find his
memorial. In 1918 Naomi started to mention Chester
who was a person that worked with Jason. I don't yet know if this
is
Chester Austin, Chester DeSelm or Chester Hanna, or none of the
above.
In 1919 near the end of the year Carl showed up. Who is Carl? And
Jason even named the middle name of his son Carl... Then
later in 1920, I cannot find George Lepare on findagrave or
familysearch. Where do Jason's hired men come from? If
you know, let me know.
In 1922 after many month's
we learn the
teacher they are boarding is "Margie" or "Marjory". We''ll hope to
learn her last name at some point.
