Farm Life in Plain Township, Wood
county, Ohio, continued
Naomi DeSelms Cox born in Ohio October 19,
1855. She is 67 years old as 1923 begins.
Her diaries from 1911-1938, still in existence, after spending a
number of decades in the attic closet of her son Clyde,
are transcribed on these web
pages.
She married John Hughes Cox
in Wood Co OH 27 April 1879. She referred to him in the diary as
"Pa".
In the spring of 1918 she and "Pa" moved from the farm on Hannah
Road
into the town of Bowling Green to 627 Wallace Avenue. They still
owned
the
farm and son Jason and his family lived there and worked the farm,
Pa
frequently helping. In 1922 they moved back to a nearby farm in
Plain
township where the Thompson's had been living. Their new neighbors
include Frank and Vinnie Everett Wammes, McConnells, Frank Martin and Fletcher's, to mention a few. Jason is still
working the old farm that is located in the north part of
Plain Township in Wood county on Hannah Road. The
acreage
north of them was Middleton Township. Some of the nearest
neighbors
included the farms of Henry Goodenough, Dan
Smith, Frank Self.
Harve and Inda Everett were across the street. Wenig, Ewing,
Coen, LeGalley, Thomas, Armitage, and Householder families were
nearby.
Naomi Esther DeSelms Cox
was a farm wife and the mother of eight children in Wood
Co in
northwestern
Ohio.
She frequently refers to John
her husband, whom she calls "Pa" and her five children:
Ethel
(living in Toledo with husband Jim Ewing;
their children: Hazel the oldest grandchild, Glenn, Donald, Dorothy, Doris, Ralph, and Wesley who was born in 1920.
(Jim's father- Wesley Ewing, lived very near
Naomi and John Cox's old farm on Hannah Road),
On Feb 1 1919 Hazel Ewing married Harold Shearer and on 23 Dec 1919
their son Albert was born, the first great
grandchild.
Johnny and
his wife Anna whose
parents lived in Luckey, living in Bowling Green- their little
girl was Zoe. and baby Dwight.
Ralph
(R.E.) newly married to Mayme (aka M.E. in the diary)
as 1919 begins and on a trip to New York and Pennsylvania.
Mayme was the mother of three sons: Cortland, Clifford and Albert Nelson
who were 23, 19 and 17 respectively, as 1923 began. Cortland got
married in 1922. In 1923 Clifford was going to school of some
kind in
Chicago and Albert yet lived at home.
Clyde
or"C.H." with his dental practice in Toledo and wife Grace, and
John and Helen and Clyde jr (aka Junior).
Grace's parents sometimes visit the farm when Clyde and
Grace visit: Emma and John Jones.
Jason and
his wife Lorena who farm in Wood county and
their son Hughie- never a well child. In 1920 Robert Carl "Bobbie" was born.
In 1922, Pa's cousin L.Z. or "Elza" as Naomi wrote his name was
killed in an auto accident leaving Laura to raise their seven children.

Mon. January 1, 1923
New
Years has been very nice, we have been alone except Jason was in a
little while. He got away a few minutes to let us know Hughie keeps
about the same- very bad. Dr. was there again. I have sewed all day,
have read tonight. Belle A. came last night.
Tues. January 2, 1923
It
has been quite nice most all day. Got to snowing a little toward
night.
Pa was at Jasons this forenoon. Hughes was sleeping good then but
had
been restless. It seems good to have Margie (Marjorie Wolfe, the teacher who
boards with them) get back. They went to a
show tonight.
Wed. January 3, 1923
Hughie doesn't get much
better. Pa was up to see him. The Dr. was there. I don't go up as
much
as I'd like to but there are so many all the time I feel in the way.
Rena, her mother and both sisters and Jason. Margie went with a friend
up town to stay tonight.
Thurs. January 4, 1923
We
went to Jasons this A.M. and brought Bobby home with us for Hughie
is
so bad Dr. was out last night again he doesn't give them any hopes
of
his living more than a few days. We took Bobbie and went to Ralphs.
He
had taken some hens to a sale got back though. Fred Collins* (see bottom of this page) came
to
Jasons, will stay.
Fri. January 5, 1923
Ethel came down
today, brought Wesley. We went up and got Bobbie then met her, she
got
here sooner than we thot and walked far as Bradley. I kept both
babies
and Pa took her to Jasons awhile and over to Ewings. Both babies
done
very well - played nicely.
Sat. January 6, 1923
They brought Bobby down. Then went on up and got a Nurse- Alice Maurer.
Hughie got so bad, she gave him Castor Oil at once and got the
phlegm
worked off- he was choking up with it so is easier a little. Glenn
came
down this P.M. to see him. Ralphs came tonight.
Sun. January 7, 1923
Pa
and Glenn went and brought Bobby down. Hughie was sleeping but was
restless all night. Had to hold him till about 4 this A.M. then
Jason
laid down and slept till about 9-30 most he's had at once for some
time. Clydes and Grace came this P.M. Glenn went home with them. Allen Park, wife and mother came to Jasons this P.M.
Mon. January 8, 1923
Hughie
was very bad all night. Jason walked the floor all night, Belle
said.
Then they had Dr. out this morning and he gave hims something to
help
him rest and sleep. They brought Bobby and came for him. Pa leased
the
farm this A.M. to a New York Co.
Tues. January 9, 1923
Hughie
is very low. They have to keep him under and opiate since yesterday
morning or he suffers. So the nurse sits right by him and there must
be
no noise. We kept Bobbie down here tonight, he is real good.
Wed. January 10, 1923
Hughie is about the same as last night. Have to keep him quiet. We
still have Bobby. Gene went to (Dr.)
Johnson today to get some more of the medicine and he said he'd come
that way from town and stop. Pa was up there tonight. Ralphs were
there
last night and today again.
Thurs. January 11, 1923
Little
Hughie is very low, growing weaker they think. Bobbie stays here
quite
contented. We have been shutting up some chickens to sell tomorrow.
23
roosters and we've kept 11 dandy white ones. They're .20 cts now.
Quite
nice today.
Fri. January 12, 1923
We got a chunk of beef of
Ralph and they brought it down today and staid to dinner. Were at
Jasons first, said Hughie seemed to be feeling better. He looked at
them and smiled. Jason sent Fred over to Sugar Ridge with a load of
corn and brought us a load of coal back. A little rough and cold.
Bobbie is getting on fine.
Sat. January 13, 1923
Pa went out
and cut down and trimmed up some trees. then went down and seen
Hughie
and brought back some oats to feed. Ralph and Mayme came down
tonight.
Pa and Bobbie were in bed so I went down with them to see him. He is
so
bad I thought he was going while we were there.
Sun. January 14, 1923
Clyde
and Grace came down this afternoon and on down to Jasons. Hughie
lays
about the same Jason told me this morning. It was raining this
morning
for quite a while. The snow is going quite fast. Bobbie well and
contented.
Mon. January 15, 1923
Hughie remains about the
same- seems more like a little corpse than a live child. Pa went up
this A.M. and Fred took the team and helped him get up some
wood.Then
this P.M. he went up town, to see about some business.
Tues. January 16, 1923
It
has been quite cold today- down to 14 above tonight and real windy.
I
talked to Rena. She says Hughie is no better. He roused this P.M.
and
bad, quite a bad time for awhile. They keep him under the opiate all
they can.
Wed. January 17, 1923
We heard from there this
eveing and Hughie is very low. It has been real rough and cold most
all
day 6 below this morning but warming up tonight but windy yet,
up
to 30 at 10 oclock.
Thurs. January 18, 1923
Poor little
Hughie passed away this morning at 3-30, after suffering so long and
could not get better. It seems almost better so. Ralphs were down
there
and came here or dinner then went with Jasons to the cemetery and to
town. Clyde and Grace came down tonight.
Fri. January 19, 1923
They
came for Bobbie this morning. He is so glad to be home. We went up
town
but went down there first. Pa paid his taxes $106.84 half tax.
Ralphs
went to Toledo. She got a new coat and hat.
Sat. January 20, 1923
Little
Hughie's funeral was at 1 oclock at the chruch. It was largely
attended
and never saw so many lovely flowers. It got to raining real hard
tonight. Clyde and Grace staid at Jasons for supper. John and Zoe
staid
here and Jims at Ewings they all day to go in the rain.
Sun. January 21, 1923
It
has been a very nice day after the hard rain last night. Ralph's
phoned
for us to come up to dinner. We stopped at Jasons a little while
then
went on up. Glenn came back with us. Had a time with the car. Jason
towed us home from there. We got to his place.
Mon. January 22, 1923
Ralph
and Jason came and helped us butcher our pig and Jason killed his
beef
too. Harry and George LePare helped him with it. We took a quarter
of
that. Will can some. It has been quite nice but has turned colder
tonight.
Tues. January 23, 1923
It has been rather cold and
raw. We rendered out the lard out doors 6 gal It seems awful good to
hae such things again. Margie went over to Maurer's to stay tonight.
Aunt Em phone. She heard from Aunt Cill.
Wed. January 24, 1923
It
has been a little snow today but thaws too. We made about 40 lbs of
sausage and Jasons made 32 lbs. Pa went up town this afternoon with
Jason to see about his notes. A man came to fix the phone. Margie
went
home tonight. Geraldine More came and Marcie (sic) wants to go home.
Thurs. January 25, 1923
Pa
and Jason took the Reo over to Howard Johnson to fix and he found it
needed a new part a distributor. Jason will get it in Toledo. I made
some mince meat and we stuffed some of the sausage, far as casings
went.
Margie went to Fremont with Geraldine tonight with some others. Pa
and
Jason ground chop feed this P.M.
Fri. January 26, 1923
I've
been busy with the meat. Fried down sausage, boiled and canned pork
and
beef together amounting to 4 qts. and 10 pints ready to boil in the
boiler in A.M. Will do some more beef next week. Jasons took Belle
to
Toledo. Will start home from there. Jasons will stay down till Sun.
Clyde will do some work for him.

been a bad day, snowed awhile this morning and is raining tonight.

I
canned my mince meat- had 2 qts and 11 pints. We also got our meat
cans
all boiled without a mishap.
Sun. January 28, 1923
We have
been at home all day and alone. Couldn't have gone if we had qanted
to
as the machine is away. It has been rather cold and disagreeable.
Rained a little some of the time. Jasons got back from Toledo
tonight.
Pa had to fill the carbide
tank this A.M.
Mon. January 29, 1923
I've
done quite a bit of work. Boiled two kettles of beef and canned 7
more
cans and friend down the rest of the sausage 1 gal, making nearly 5
gal. Little better than 4. I sewed a little too. Made a little
dresser
scarf to send Nan. Her birthday is Sat. Lydia Thomas died this P.M.
Tues. January 30, 1923
Margie

stay there last
night. Jason took Pa over to see about the machine and on up town
and
out to Ralphs. Jason went to see about a cow but it was sold. Pa
bought
an incubator. It has been a lovely day.

funeral. She was buried here at Union Hill. Jason went over and got
our
car and took it up. got has and brout it home. It run pretty good
today. Jason helped Harry haul away his hogs.
Thurs. February 1, 1923
They
brought out the incubator this A.M. It is a big thing for us to
undertake but he will have to do more of the chicken work this year
than he did last year. I've engaged eggs at two places. Pa took out
potatoes for the first.
Fri. February 2, 1923
It has been a
very dark cloudy day and foggy. Has rained a little tonight. The
Ground
hog didn't see his shadow here today, I'm sure. Jason and Bobbie
were
in a little while. got some sand for Bobbys box. I boiled my last
meat
cans.
Sat. February 3, 1923
It has grown lots colder down
close to Zero tonight about 10 above and windy. Got a letter from
Ethel
and some of Ralphs work marked 100. They are all doing well but
Harold
is out of work. He don't seem to stick at anything. Too bad.
Sun. February 4, 1923
It
has been real cold all day, close to Zero this A.M. up to 12
tonight.
Hope its warmer tomorrow. Ralph, Mayme, and Clifford stopped this
evening. Had been over to LeGalleys for eggs. Stopped at Jasons
awhile
first. We've been home all day.
Mon. February 5, 1923
It has
been quite a nice day but cold, though its warmer than last night-
its
19 tonight. Margie has quite a bad cold again. I'm not feeling very
good- have a headache but took a couple of tablets, am afraid of the
flu. There is lots of it.
Tues. February 6, 1923
It hasn't been quite so cold- 28 tonight, but snowed some. We just
heard Mrs. Gallier, Mabel Smith's mother died this P.M. Her father died only a week or so ago. Henriette phoned, she is out again, will come
down. Pa went up to mill and paid some debts again.
Wed. February 7, 1923
It
is some warmer but has been rather blustery. Snowed some most all
day
but not to amount to any depth. Jason and Fred cut ice in the
quarry.
Got it out and piled up.
Thurs. February 8, 1923
Jason sold his big hog to some shippers. Pa took it away this A.M.
while he and Fred
put up their ice. We went up and got Henriette B. this P.M. We got
started so late we took the teacher with us. It has been quite nice
but
rather windy.
Fri. February 9, 1923

bad. We have visited here this forenoon, then Pa took us to Jasons
this
afternoon awhile. Henriette is going to make my percale dress
tomorrow.
Sat. February 10, 1923
Henriette
cut out and made my dress. A loose fitting housedress like I've been
wanting. Pa went over and got 22 doz. of eggs to set. I've done
usual
work, baked pies and cookies and crocheted some for a new night gown
she helped plan.
Sun. February 11, 1923
It has been nice,
after dinner we went to Ralphs and got 7 doz. more eggs, were coming
right back but they insisted on our staying to supper. We did and
Cortland and wife and Clifford rode back to B.G. We took Henriette
home
too. What a time we had with car got out of gas about 2 miles B.G.
Our
lights went almost out. We sure had an awful time.
Mon. February 12, 1923
It was rather nice only cloudy till late P.M. It got to raining and
kept it up for some time. The teacher staid to Brescolls
till after supper when it stopped. Their boy came home with her.
Jasons
went up town and took our batteries off the car to be charged. We
set
our incubator.
Tues. February 13, 1923
It has been warm,
foggy and cloudy and thawed, so it is very muddy. The teacher went
up
town right from school. I think she was to meet some friends. Hasn't
got back. Jason was hauling corn yesterday. It rained and he put 2
loads in our sheds but hasn't come for them yet.
Wed. February 14, 1923
My
what a bad day it has been. About 8 above zero all day and blew
awful
hard all the time. Margie went home last night. Had to walk in from
the
car this morning. We got an announcement of a baby boy. Bessie Taylor's (Orra's girl).

very
bad-can't work. It has been quite cold again, close to zero this

Jason
and Fred hauled corn. Brought us cobs. I've made a good night gown
trimmed in crochet.
Sat. February 17, 1923
We are having
awful cold weather. Down to 3 above tonight. Was up to 16 awhile. We
washed- quite a washing, and ironed. Finished up my nightgown and
wrote
Ethel. Jason took a load of corn to the Ridge and brought us a load
of
coal back. Have to burn lots now. Alta Pugh funeral.
Sun. February 18, 1923
Jasons
went out to Ralphs for dinner had a capon for dinner. We have been
at
home all day. Its been too cold to try to go. Jason just brought our
batteries home tonight. Maybe if it warms up, we can go some. Its 12
above tonight.
Mon. February 19, 1923
It has turned lots
warmer up to 28 tonight and snowing quite hard awhile. Jasons folks
came down tonight. First time for a long while. I havn't felt very
good- had some dizzy spells. Jason has finished his job of hauling
corn
at 100.
Tues. February 20, 1923
It has been quite nice about
30 in shade. Thawed some in the sun. A card from Ethel says she and
babe were sick Thurs. night but all are around and Glenn is going to
work again. Jason took Pa up to get his car-numbers but looked at
some
new cars. They think we'll have to try and get one the old Reo is
getting so poor.
Wed. February 21, 1923
there was an agent out today with a sedan Chivolet-
a very nice machine and we thot awhiloe we'd take it but he had to
see
the others about taking in our old one. He came back but only wants
to
give $79. Ralphs were here tonight. Glad to have us get one. Its
been
quite nice.
Thurs. February 22, 1923
Well, Pa went up this
morning and signed up for the car. It is a very good little car I
think
for us. Bobbie was a little sick yesterday but Jason had him here
with
him this morning. Teacher went over to Harrys tonight to stay. It
has
been snowy a little today.
Fri. February 23, 1923
It has been
quite nice but rather cold. Got up as high as 15 or 16 but down to
11
tonight. A pie social and program at the school-house but we felt it
was too cold to go. Jason, Fred, and Pa took the old Reo up and
brought
home the new sedan. Its so nice. It froze a little coming home. A
letter from Orra and one from Ethel. They are some better.
Sat. February 24, 1923
We
had a ride in our new car. Jason and Lorena went with us and all
went
up town. It stormed some too, snowed and a little sleet. It sure
rides
nice and easy. Gene kept Bobby- he doesn't feel good yet. Don't take
him out much.
Sun. February 25, 1923
Jason went with us down
to Toledo. Went to Ethels for dinner, then over to Johns awhile.
Clydes
folks ame over to Ethels so we had a busy day. It has been quite
nice
though. Thawed some. They all seem to like the car and took a ride
in
it.
Mon. February 26, 1923
It has thawed and rained some too.
So it is pretty sloppy. The back yard is awful wet. Pa commenced
trimming grapes and fixing the garage for the brooder. I've cut out
quite a bit of sewing.
Tues. February 27, 1923
It has been quite nice, still thawing. I got a letter from Nan. She has got back to Grand Rapids to Alsons. She is tired of Penn. Don't think she
can live there. Ralphs folks has 242 baby chicks.
Wed. February 28, 1923
It
has seemed quite spring like today but quite muddy and lots of water
hasn't thawed deep enough for the water to soak away. Its been
cloudy
this afternoon and is nowing tonight. Ralphs has been hunting for
hard
coal for the brooder. Awful hard to get.
Thurs. March 1, 1923
March came in rather lamb-like. There was little snow on the ground
this A.M. but soon went off and the sun shone this P.M. Fletchers
moved. Jason and Fred both helped. A car load of hard-coal came in.
Jason brought us some. Carol came home from Ada, came down to see
Margie.
Fri. March 2, 1923
It has been quite nice today- up to 50. Was froze this A.M. Didn't
need much fire. Jason helped George Beman
move up near N. Baltimore. Won't get back till tomorrow. I've sewed
some and helped Pa clean up the cellar some. Jason didn't have to go
up
there after all, came back.
Sat. March 3, 1923
It has been a
lovely day. I did a large washing. Had doors open, no fire in the
room,
only kitchen. Pa drove up town in the new car alone out across our
field and Brescolls to stone road. They have put hinm on
the School-Board again in Goodenough place. I got 33 eggs.
Sun. March 4, 1923
It
hs been terrible windy today. Blew limbs off some of the trees and
the
lawn-swing over. Our chickens are hatching good we think and
tomorrow
is the day, we can't open it till Tues. Jason was down awhile. Says
Gene is sick had the Dr.
Mon. March 5, 1923
It
has been a real nice day. Pa got the brooder ready and will take the
chickens off early in the morning. There are so many we'd like to
take
them off tonight but afraid it wouldn't be best. Margie's brother (who
we will later learn is George Wolfe) and Carol and Pauline
came for her and got stuck. Pa helped them out.
Tues. March 6, 1923
It
has snowed all day long. Its getting real deep. We took our chickens
off this morning 211 and they seem to be getting along fine. Johnny
honed from town this P.M. Margie staid to Brescolls for supper and
quite late.
Wed. March 7, 1923
Another bad cold day. Didn't
snow so much but drifted bad and snowed hard by spells. Ralph and
Mayme
came and brought Jasons eggs for the incubator and got our old one
to
set. They got stuck and so did McConnell tonight. Road is drifted so. Its
down to 22 tonight. We heard the people were moving out of our
house.
Thurs. March 8, 1923
It
has been quite nice today since the awful bad storm. And quite a lot
of
the snow has gone but the drifts will stay a good while. Pa went
down
to Jasons and cut down some trees. Fred helped him. Jason sold his
last
6 pigs and delivered them.
Fri. March 9, 1923
Jason brought Bobbie down and went up town with Pa as he was going
up to see Bernie
about the house. A woman was going to look at it to rent. I had
dinner
ready and they staid. Then pa went up with him and cut wood, etc
etc.
It was froze this A.M. but got warmer.
Sat. March 10, 1923
It
has been quite nice today. Snow nearly all gone only some drifts. We
went down to Jasn this afternoon to get some oats. Jason bought 2
brood-sows (Poland-China)
this forenoon. Got a letter from Ethel. All are round. Some not
feeling
good- colds. Ethel has, and Wesley a pretty little coat- sent piece.
Sun. March 11, 1923
Jim came in this morning as we were getting ready for Church.
Visited awhile then we took him over to his father's
on our way. Then Clydes came to Jasons this P.M. Then on down here.
We
got them to stay for supper. It has been nice but rained a little
tonight.
Mon. March 12, 1923
The rain last night turned out
to be an awful bad rain and wind storm. It must have done lots of
damage. It beat into the brooder house, got the chickens wet and put
out the fire- or the wind did and 15 chicks were dead. More will
die,
got chilled. Its been awful windy all day.
Tues. March 13, 1923
It
has been lots better today but rather raw and chilly. Little
flurries
of snow once in awhile. We drove up town this evening as school was
out
and took Margie along to the dentist but he was sick, couldn't work.
Margie went up tonight with Harry LeGalley.
Wed. March 14, 1923
It snowed quite hard last night and this A.M. about two hours but is
nearly gone tonight. Mr. Reider
came out and bought the hay. Will send men out to bail it. Bobbie
isn't
feeling good. Margie went up town with some Rudolph folks to see the
football game.
Thurs. March 15, 1923
It has been a bad day.
Rained some most all afternnon and awful hard tonight. Ralph and
Mayme
came down and got a hen to set on goose eggs. Pa got Jasons team and
hauled down two loads of wood. Got so wet had to change. A letter
from Nan. She has a place as a nurse for an old
lady.
Fri. March 16, 1923
It
blew awful hard all night and rained lots too. Fields are awfully
wet,
its been cold and raw all day. Margie is about sick with cold. I
have
been sewing some on my tatting. Trimmed gown and read quite a while
in
the new papers. Geo. Wixson phoned and asked about the place.
Some one wants to buy it.
Sat. March 17, 1923
Pa
went to the mill and got quite a load of chop feed. Took Jasons
little
team and wagon. I did quite a large washing and swept, mopped and
cleaned up the little chickens brooder house. It has been nice day,
only the wind is a little cold. Jason has had bad luck with his
little
pigs.
Sun. March 18, 1923
It has been very nice today but I
felt bad all forenoon. We didn't go to church. Jason came down this
A.M. and he and Pa went over to the cemetery and look around. He is
having a monument made. We went up to Ralphs this P.M. He has had
some
bad luck with pigs too.
Mon. March 19, 1923
It has been an
awul cold windy day. It was down near zero this morning, 4 above
early
at 5 oclock. We had 6 little pigs last night before it turned cold.
There was an awful sudden changed in the night- went down 36 degrees
in
4 hours.
Tues. March 20, 1923
It is getting back to normal
again, is quite nice tonight. Margie had to go to Plain school-house
after school to a meeting of the Plain teachers. Jason phoned. The
hay-bailers came tonight and they want to ship hogs tomorrow.

Appendicitis

home
and I couldn't husk.
Tues. December 11, 1923
It
has been a lovely day. Pa has helped husk again. Is pretty tired
tonight. Thinks he won't go out tomorrow. We will go to town I
guess. I
got my Xmas check $18- I've been pretty busy with Xmas things.
Wed. December 12, 1923
Rena
went with us up town. She was looking for her mother and Aunt to
come
from Fostoria but they didn't come. Drew my money and started
another
one for next year. Pa went over and helped thrash at Selfs this P.M. It got to raining this P.M.
Stopped their thrashing.
Thurs. December 13, 1923
Down
to 24 tonight. After raining most all night, it kept it up till
about
noon, then turned to snow. So much water on the ground it doesn't
show
so much. Has been a very bad day but its the fist snow. I've done
quite
a bit at Xmas work. Pa has been home all day. Mr. Brown comes
instead
of Brooks now to deliver.
Fri. December 14, 1923
It has been
quite nice but too cold for the snow to go off yet stands at 30
tonight. I've worked on towels and such things. Pa went up, brought
down a load of manure for the potato pits. Bobbie was sick
yesterday.
Sat. December 15, 1923
I
done up the usual work and made doughnuts this forenoon. Then we
went
up town this P.M. Tried to shop a little but there was such a jam
one
couldn't do anything. A letter from Ethel. They ar'n't very well.
Sun. December 16, 1923
Pa

in
time, dressed a chicken for dinner. Pa went down and did Jasons

shopping came round and got us. She grew worse while we were there.
They thought she was going, we had to come home though. Glenn came
home
with us. Ate supper at Johns. Stopped at Ethels.

and
Glenn took Rena up town. Gene feels a little better. Had Dr. last
night. He called it Devils Grippe. I ironed but don't feel so very
good someway.
Thurs. December 20, 1923
Pa
and I went up town this forenoon as it was too rainy or wet to work
at
the corn. It rained quite a good bit in the night. We went to Jasons
this P.M. Got some ever green. Have fixed the fence so can drive
across
now.
Fri. December 21, 1923
It was rainy this moring when we started to Aunt Cillia's
funeral but turned out quite nice after all. Quite a good crowd out.
John, Ethel, and Clydes all went to the church. Buried at Metamora.
Services in Toledo. We stopped at Clydes, and got our carbide,
coming
home.
Sat. December 22, 1923
I've been quite busy all day, I
tried to fix things to look a little like Xmas even if I can't have
a
regular family dinner as I used to do. But Jasons and Clydes will
come
tomorrow and I'll have some of the others another day. Won't be so
hard.
Sun. December 23, 1923
It
was quite stormy this morning. It rained then snowed awhile then
misted
a little most all day. Clydes and Jasons and Glenn came and we had a
very nice day. Both brought such nice present. Clydes lovely
blankets,
large fruit stand, sheepskin vest, tie and h'k'f's. Jason's silk
gloves, safety razor, children's pictures, etc.
Mon. December 24, 1923
It
has been nice all day but too wet to do anything at husking. Pa has
been round home most all day. Husked the pop-corn etc. Was down to
Jasons awhile and Glenn came back with him. Got some more greetings-
from Nan, and Orra and letter.
Tues. December 25, 1923
We
and Glenn went down and spent the day at Ethels. Had a nice day and
a
dandy turkey dinner with nice oyster dressing and everything that
goes
with it. And on to Johns. Just got a lot more lovely presents too
numerous to mention. Ralphs and Cortlands folks came over awhile. Mrs. Bense phoned this evening.
Wed. December 26, 1923
Ralphs
butchered two nice large hogs. We went out, Pa went to help and I
and
the children went along. It has been a nice day but cloudy tonight.
Hope it doesn't rain for they think they can husk tomorrow.
Thurs. December 27, 1923
Well
it did rain and made it real wet again. There was a special school
board meeting called this afternoon and Pa had to go. Dorothy and I
tied a quilt this afternoon.
Fri. December 28, 1923
I havn't
felt so very good. Am taking a little cold but have done quite a bit
of
work: hemmed the quilt, and made two aprons. Pa and Glenn husked
this
afternoon. The Watkins man came.
Sat. December 29, 1923
I'm
nearly sick tonight with my cold but have done quite a bit too.
Jason
had a little lay off so they've been shredding today. He went up and
got his truck out before he knew it, so will get paid. Mrs. Abbott
came
back this A.M. Gene is better. Dorothy has been at Jasons today.
Tended
Baby some.
Sun. December 30, 1923
Jim and Ethel with Wesley
came u this moring. Then Pa went up and brought Mrs. Bense down for
the
day, took her back, and Jim and girls went home at the same time.
Ralph
and Mayme and Cortlands folks came tonight. Jason went to Clydes
today.
Mon. December 31, 1923

gingham she gave me Xmas. Pa and I took her and the two little boys
home this P.M. Pa hauled a load of corn for Jason this A.M. It has

*Fred
Collins comes to stay with Jason Jan 4 1923. That means the Fred
who I
have thought was Fred Weihl is mostly Fred Collins. There is a
Frederick Collins who was born in Lyons, Michigan on 12 May 1899
to
David and Laura B Hammond COLLINS who married Faye A Filier who
was
born on 31 May 1906 in Custar Ohio, the daughter of Orville and
Agnes
Parker Filiere. Fred and Faye married in Wood county in 1926 he
working
at National Wheel Works and living in Bowling Green. They
were
living in Perrysburg by 1930 census. I have not located him after
1930
(if that is in fact him)
In
1922 after many month's we learn the
teacher they are boarding is "Margie" or "Marjorie". In March of
1923
we learn that her parents are Charles and Charlotte Wolfe and her
siblings are H Eloise, Ruth, and George.
Who
is Homer who is mentioned occasionally as accompanying Naomi's son
John
W Cox, who has the restaurant in Toledo? In the 1920 census Homer
Oswald is a lodger in the home of John and Anna on Raymer st in
Toledo
and he is a streetcar conductor a job John worked sometimes in the
past, although the census notes him as a house carpenter for 1920.
Homer was 24 years old and born in Indiana of Indiana born
parents. By
1940 he was a bus driver in Toledo and he was married to Erna and
they
had a child.
