Naomi DeSelms Cox's 1925 Diary ©
Farm Life in Plain Township, Wood
county, Ohio, continued
Naomi Esther DeSelms Cox born in Ohio
October 19, 1855. She is 69 years old as 1925 begins.
Her diaries from 1911-1938, still in existence, after spending a
number of decades in the attic closet of her son Clyde,
are transcribed on these web
pages.
She married John Hughes Cox
in Wood Co OH 27 April 1879. She referred to him in the
diary as "Pa".
The early years of their marriage, (pre diary years) they lived in
Perrysburg, on the farm of his parents Joseph and Jane Rebecca
Underwood Cox. After the death of the parents they moved to Plain
township on Hannah Road, where they lived by 1911.In the spring of
1918 she and "Pa" moved from the farm on Hannah Road
into the town of Bowling Green to 627 Wallace Avenue. They still
owned
the
farm and son Jason and his family lived there and worked the farm,
Pa
frequently helping. In 1922 they moved back to a nearby farm in
Plain
township where the Thompson's had been farming. By 1925, their
neighbors
included McConnells, Brescolls, Reiders, Frank Martin, Fletcher's, Bradleys, and Canterburys, to
mention a few. Jason is still working the old farm that is located
in the north part of
Plain Township in Wood county on Hannah Road. The
acreage
north of them was Middleton Township. Some of the nearest
neighbors
included the farms of Henry Goodenough, Dan
Smith, Frank Self.
Harve and Inda Everett were across the street. Wenig, Ewing,
Coen, LeGalley, Thomas, Armitage, and Householder families were
nearby.
By
1925, all of her grandchildren have been born and there is a
beginning of great grandchildren. Her five children and their
children, often mentioned in these pages:
Ethel
(living in Toledo with husband Jim Ewing;
their children: Hazel the oldest grandchild (who has
married Harold Shearer and produced the first Great
grandchildren Albert and Catherine, Glenn, Donald, Dorothy, Doris, Ralph, and Wesley who was born in 1920.
(Jim's father- Wesley Ewing, lived very near
Naomi and John Cox's old farm on Hannah Road),
Johnny and
his wife Anna whose
parents lived in Luckey, living in Bowling Green- children: Zoe. and Dwight.
Ralph
(R.E.) newly married to Mayme (aka M.E. in the diary)
as 1919 begins and on a trip to New York and Pennsylvania.
Mayme was the mother of three sons: Cortland, Clifford and Albert Nelson
who were 25, 21 and 19 respectively, as 1925 began.
Cortland
married Mary in 1922 and they are the parents of Ralph (aka Buddy) and Nadine. In 1923 Clifford was going to
school of some kind in
Chicago and Albert yet lived at home.
Clyde
or"C.H." with his dental practice in Toledo and wife Grace, and
John and Helen and Clyde jr (aka Junior).
Grace's parents sometimes visit the farm when Clyde and
Grace visit: Emma and John Jones.
Jason and
his wife Lorena (aka Rena or Rene) who farm
in Wood county and in 1920 Robert Carl "Bobbie" was born and in 1923
Mary Gene was born.

The 1925 Diary of Naomi Esther DeSelms Cox
Note: this diary calls for a weather and temperature notation
which will be on the top line each day.
(If you have read her
earlier diaries you know that would be a briefer mention that the norm :-))

b 1903 school teacher at the nearby school house, boarded with
Naomi and Pa.)
Mon. January 5, 1925 Nice
30
It
seems good to get settled back to our regular work again. Glenn came
down this P.M. Brought the car and will leave it for awhile as they
have so little use for it now. It doesn't pay to hire garage room.
Tues. January 6, 1925 Nice
32
Jason
hauled away the hogs this forenoon, 4 for us, and some for himself.
they brought u $80. Then this P.M. he took a load of oats to Togany
for
Pa. They brought $63.40 then when he came back they butchered his
beef.
We can take a quarter.
Wed. January 7, 1925 Snow

We
went up town. Pa drew his money on checks then settled for the car.
Then we went on out to Ralphs in time for dinner. Then finished
paying
him some we owed him before coming here. Jason brought the beef this
evening.
Thurs. January 8, 1925 Moderate

Glenn
went with Jason on his trip again today. They brought us a load of

Fri. January 9, 1925 Mod. 20
It was colder this morning- 10 above, but warmed up fast, high as 35
awhile, averaged 20.
Jason was going to Toledo this P.M. Will take some beef. Glenn was

Sat. January 10, 1925 Nice 34
Pa went up to mill this afternoon. I havn't felt so very good,
taking a little cold, I'm afraid. Jason and Harry LeGalley went to Grand Rapids
today.
Sun. January 11, 1925 Cold windy 19
We have been at home all day alone. I have quite a cold. Have lain
down quite a bite.
Mon. January 12, 1925 Warm snowed
32
I feel some better. Cold has got looser. I havn't done much but
usual work and read some when not lying down.
Tues. January 13, 1925 Colder snowed
20
My
cold is broke and am feeling quite good. Have done quite a bit of
work.
Finished a linen shopping bag, embroidered with yarn, lined with
blue
sateen lining. Quite pretty. Will give it to Ethel.
Wed. January 14, 1925 Cold

Very
nice and clear but cold. Jason drove in this evening, got our
cream. Its hard to get round for the snow is deep in places, drifted
in. We don't drive out much. Putting up ice at quarry.
Thurs. January 15, 1925 Cold 3 above
A.M.
Philo Jones
was buried down here this afternoon. Pa went over. Not very many
out,
so hard to get round. Mr. Brink came and took Gladys out tonight.
Going
home first I guess.
Fri. January 16, 1925 Mod. rain 35
We
done some washing but dried in the house. Have a good place for the
clothesbars upstairs. Brink came for Gladys again tonight. I cough
quite hard yet sometimes.
(as
I read these, they are each a little haiku and I read it and get
transported away. Like can't you just picture that largely empty
upstairs probably an entire empty room for the clothes bar. I know
she's glad to have that. I can't find Brink on findagrave or
familysearch. She doesn't end up with him, so it doesn't matter so
much
in a way. It's like this, I would LIKE to find Gladys and leave
her a
flower or something. She does get married (to someone else) but I
lose
them. I haven't looked totally
hard for them yet but they don't end up in Wood county. Lucky me,
and
lucky everyone who has a family history interest in Wood county
that
several people have done a yeoman's or yeowomen's job of creating
MANY
memorials for Wood county on findagrave. If I had a extra day up
there
on the generally 24 or less hours I am in BG each year, with that
extra
day I would try to meet Lavida, Dr. Cynthia, Donna (except there
is no
Texas in Wood co :-( and more, but we could try. anyways...
in the meantime, I had better get back to...)
Sat. January 17, 1925 Colder 26
Jason
hauled away Canterbury's crib of corn with his truck 11 ton. Pa went
up
town, got his Auto license and paid Insurance. I did my little
ironing
and finished a blue percale dress.

I
know these people live within a page of John and Naomi speaking of
where they lived in 1923 &c. Because they moved into Earl and
Margarets farm in 1923. another few pages along and they are
enumerating the Hannah Rd area where John and Naomi lived in
1911-16ish, where Jason and Rena live now. Point of the
story-
how close Jason and Pa lived to each other in 1925. By the way
Jason at
the end of 1924 was just getting interested in the dairy business.
That's something to keep in mind. It is after the scope of these
diaries I believe, but Mary Gene married Don Marten. They met
because
Don was working for Jason on his dairy farm. But I
digress....that's
much later in the story. anywho...)

(20151213-2038
I keep a diary every day. Have for years but I am long winded
writing a
page every day or maybe half a page. It would be interesting to do
one
with such brevity as Naomi's.
Yesterday
would have been "To the library, Internet dropped when I arrived,
so
swapped some soup and citrus with Regina and came on home and
keyed in
and uploaded the rest of 1924." I've been doing this so much
I am
living it half the time. Part of the thing is I am not reading a
novel
at present which is a good break from 1924 ... or 1925 &c
&c.... I like that "&c" :-) but I digress...
but
adding emoticoms to our English or haikus is revolutionary-
a
leap of a change in communication in contrast to a tiny babystep
of
change. Not that it matters so much as say for example a tiny
little
crack in the code of the law and water or roots or dirt will
further erode the foundation... anywho, I digress: yesterday in
haiku,
onward... well I guess I did get it done briefly. Just
barely
over a line- Naomi's average a little longer. anywho......)

Fred
Collins came to stay with Jason Jan 4 1923. There is a
Frederick Collins who was born in Lyons, Michigan on 12 May 1899
to
David and Laura B Hammond COLLINS who married Faye A Filier who
was
born on 31 May 1906 in Custar Ohio, the daughter of Orville and
Agnes
Parker Filiere. Fred and Faye married in Wood county in 1926 he
working
at National Wheel Works and living in Bowling Green. They
were
living in Perrysburg by 1930 census. I have not located him after
1930
(if that is in fact him). Near the end of 1923 Jason started
driving a truck and Fred found a job in Perrysburg.
Who
is Homer who is mentioned occasionally as accompanying Naomi's son
John
W Cox, who has the restaurant in Toledo? In the 1920 census Homer
Oswald is a lodger in the home of John and Anna Cox on Raymer St
in Toledo
and he is a streetcar conductor, a job John worked sometimes in
the
past, although the census notes John was a house carpenter in
1920.
Homer was 24 years old and born in Indiana of Indiana born
parents. By
1940 he was a bus driver in Toledo and he was married to Erna and
they
had a child.
George
LePare is still occassionally mentioned... for example plums got
of him
on September 3rd. Still can't find "hide nor hair" of him outside
of
this diary.
Frank L Mann was born in Wood county in 1874 and he
married Mamie Ex. They were the parents of Berlin who married
Raymond
Ewing. I can't find Frank on findagrave, and don't know what year
he
passed away.
