Naomi DeSelms Cox's 1928 Diary
Farm Life in Plain Township, Wood
county, Ohio, continued
Naomi Esther DeSelms Cox born in Ohio
October 19, 1855. She is 72 years old as 1928 begins.
Her diaries from 1911-1938, still in existence, after spending a
number of decades in the attic closet of her son Clyde,
are transcribed on these web
pages.
She married John Hughes Cox
in Wood Co OH 27 April 1879. She referred to him in the
diary as "Pa".
The early years of their marriage, (pre diary years) they lived in
Perrysburg, on the farm of his parents Joseph and Jane Rebecca
Underwood Cox. After the death of the parents they moved to Plain
township on Hannah Road, where they lived by 1911.In the spring of
1918 she and "Pa" moved from the farm on Hannah Road
into the town of Bowling Green to 627 Wallace Avenue. They still
owned
the
farm and son Jason and his family lived there and worked the farm,
Pa
frequently helping. In 1922 they moved back to a nearby farm in
Plain
township where the Thompson's had been farming. By 1925, their
neighbors
included McConnells, Brescolls, Reiders, Frank Martin, Fletcher's, Bradleys, and Canterburys, to
mention a few. Jason is still working the old farm that is located
in the north part of
Plain Township in Wood county on Hannah Road. The
acreage
north of them was Middleton Township. Some of the nearest
neighbors
included the farms of Henry Goodenough, Dan
Smith, Frank Self.
Harve and Inda Everett were across the street. Wenig, Ewing,
Coen, LeGalley, Thomas, Armitage, and Householder families were
nearby.
By
1925, all of her grandchildren have been born and there is a
beginning of great grandchildren. Her five children and their
children, often mentioned in these pages:
Ethel
(living in Toledo with husband Jim Ewing;
their children: Hazel the oldest grandchild (who has
married Harold Shearer and produced the first Great
grandchildren Albert and Catherine, Glenn, Donald, Dorothy, Doris, Ralph, and Wesley who was born in 1920.
(Jim's father- Wesley Ewing, lived very near
Naomi and John Cox's old farm on Hannah Road),
Johnny and
his wife Anna whose
parents lived in Luckey, living in Bowling Green- children: Zoe. and Dwight.
Ralph
(R.E.) newly married to Mayme (aka M.E. in the diary)
as 1919 begins and on a trip to New York and Pennsylvania.
Mayme was the mother of three sons: Cortland, Clifford and Albert Nelson
who were 25, 21 and 19 respectively, as 1925 began.
Cortland
married Mary in 1922 and they are the parents of Ralph (aka Buddy) and Nadine. In 1923 Clifford was going to
school of some kind in
Chicago and Albert yet lived at home.
Clyde
or"C.H." with his dental practice in Toledo and wife Grace, and
John and Helen and Clyde jr (aka Junior).
Grace's parents sometimes visit the farm when Clyde and
Grace visit: Emma and John Jones.
Jason and
his wife Lorena (aka Rena or Rene) who farm
in Wood county and in 1920 Robert Carl "Bobbie" was born and in 1923
Mary Gene was born.

notes.***
There are several "Virtual
Cemeteries" on findagrave related to these diaries. A new one is made for 1928-1930.
Will try to add absolutely every one mentioned in these years,
even if
the mention is to note only their burial The first Virtual
Cemetery became unwieldy in size.

Note: this diary calls for a weather and temperature notation
which will be on the top line each day.
There is more room for writing in this 1928 diary than many, in
fact, most, of the previous years of her diary keeping.
Sun. January 1, 1928 Very cold, windy Zero
My! What a day. Clyde went with Jason
this morning but they had a very hard day, snow had drifted so. So
many
got stuck on our road. Jason will take the truck up town tonight.
Clyde
will go up to bring him back, then go home. Dorothy goes home with them. Al left Jason this morning, went to Dans.
Mon. January 2, 1928 Cold 5 Above
Not much of interest, just usual work. I've sewed some and read some
in the book Ralph's gave me "Shavings"
by Joseph Lincoln. We listened awhile to the big Foot-ball
game in Col.- Stanford and Pittsburg. They've been clearing
the road of snow.
Tues. January 3, 1928 Cold 8 Below A.M.
10 Above P.M.
It
has moderated quite a lot today. I'm so glad- I get so tired of the
Zero weather. A snow plow went along a couple of times and cleaned
the
roads off good. Ernie came in A.M. Comes often when he can't
work, gets lonesome like Pa, They talk. James came tonight to listen to
the radio. (James is Ernie's son)
Wed. January 4, 1928 Clear, Cold, windy P.M. 3
A.M. 20 P.M.
We
did a large washing but cold and windy to hang them up but got them
all
in and will be ready to iron in morning. We got check for the
chickens
yesterday $51.88. Milk check Sun $16.10. Don't get so much now.
Jason
only takes it every other day.
Thurs. January 5, 1928 Moderating 30
I did my ironing and sewed some. I've got the quilt blocks going
again. Think I can finish one quilt before long.
Fri. January 6, 1928 Pleasant 35
We went up to Ralphs this afternoon. He is hauling away a
crib of corn It is 90 cts now. Stopped at Jasons a few minutes.
Jason was at John Oppermans sale. Snow is about gone, only
big drifts. Donald and Hazel Fasler were married.
Sat. January 7, 1928 Moderate 40

with him and got it and brought our meat from Harves, 1/2 of
a pig.
Grandchildren were the Pallbearers today- Glenn, Don, Roscoe, Robert (Arthur Ewing's son), Lawrence and Clarence Kidd.
Wed. January 11, 1928 Pleasant 40
We
got our meat taken care of and a little sausage made, some 14 or 15
lbs- it is much better and easier for us now and enough for us too,
we
think, to buy a half instead of raising and fatting a pig. Jason had
to
hire a truck, his had to be fixed.
Thurs. January 12, 1928 Pleasant but cloudy

We
went up town this afternoon. Pa had to settle up about the car as it

and Pa didn't feel like it either. Johnny's all came down tonight,
got
a couple of chickens and 3 doz eggs.
Mon. December 24, 1928 Nice 40
I
felt pretty bad this morning but we went up town about noon. Pa
tended
to some bank affair of Johnny's and I got a few little things. We
went
and called on Sarah. She gave me some medicine that helped her.
Tues. December 25, 1928 Lovely Christmas
We
went to Ethels for the day. Glenns and Dons were there. Hardly
seemed
like Xmas- Sun shone all day. Clydes came over, brought us a lot of
things, so nice. Ethels and children all so many havn't room to name
them. Ralphs and Jasons brought theirs this morning. All are nice.
Wed. December 26, 1928 Pleasant 45
We
have been resting up. I slept quite a while and have felt better. Am
going to rest more now till I get all right again. Clydes came this
afternoon. Knew they were and had a chicken supper. He phoned to
Dorothy and John not to wait but eat their supper. Didn't expect to
stay they would have it ready.
Thurs. December 27, 1928 Rainy warm 40
I
felt rather bad again today. Laid down quite a bit. Pa went up town
and
got his car numbers and egg mash. Sold 28 1/2 doz. since Thurs.
They're
down to .36.
Fri. December 28, 1928 Mod 40
Mr. Samuel Johnston
was buried this P.M. Ralphs went, then came down here tonight. Got a
letter from Ethel. Don's car went bad, they are fixing it up at
home.
I'm feeling some better today, rest a good deal.
Sat. December 29, 1928 Colder 30
Manson
came down this morning, started to walk but got to ride nearly all
the
way, brought us one of their pictures. Pa took him home this P.M.
Our
lights wet off tonight.
Sun. December 30, 1928 Cold 30
We
have been home all day. I am getting lots better but couldn't go
away
yet and Pa couldn't get through chores in time. Johnnys folks all
but
Anna came down tonight. She is feeling pretty bad. They got 3
chickens.
Mon. December 31, 1928 Very nice 38
Donald
and wife and her father and Ralph came early this morning to hunt.
Last
day. They went home early and we went at the washing. Had a very
large
one, some got dry, not all. Afraid I took a little cold. So nice
thought we must get it done.
