Naomi DeSelms Cox's 1929 Diary
Farm Life in Plain Township, Wood
county, Ohio, continued
Naomi Esther DeSelms Cox born in Ohio
October 19, 1855. She is 73 years old as 1929 begins.
Her diaries from 1911-1938, still in existence, after spending a
number of decades in the attic closet of her son Clyde,
are transcribed on these web
pages.
She married John Hughes Cox
in Wood Co OH 27 April 1879. She referred to him in the
diary as "Pa".
The early years of their marriage, (pre diary years) they lived in
Perrysburg, on the farm of his parents Joseph and Jane Rebecca
Underwood Cox. After the death of the parents they moved to Plain
township on Hannah Road, where they lived by 1911.In the spring of
1918 she and "Pa" moved from the farm on Hannah Road
into the town of Bowling Green to 627 Wallace Avenue. They still
owned
the
farm and son Jason and his family lived there and worked the farm,
Pa
frequently helping. In 1922 they moved back to a nearby farm in
Plain
township where the Thompson's had been farming. By 1925, their
neighbors
included McConnells, Brescolls, Reiders, Frank Martin, Fletcher's, Bradleys, to mention a
few. Jason is still working the old farm that is located in the
north part of
Plain Township in Wood county on Hannah Road. The
acreage
north of them was Middleton Township. Some of the nearest
neighbors
included the farms of Henry Goodenough, Dan
Smith, Frank Self.
Harve and Inda Everett were across the street. Wenig, Ewing,
Coen, LeGalley, Thomas, Armitage, and Householder families were
nearby.
By
1929, there are some great grandchildren. Her five children and their
children, often mentioned in these pages:
Ethel
(living in Toledo with husband Jim Ewing;
their children: Hazel the oldest grandchild (who has
married Harold Shearer and produced the first Great
grandchildren Albert and Catherine, Glenn, Donald, Dorothy, Doris, Ralph, and Wesley who was born in 1920.
(Jim's father- Wesley Ewing, who lived very near
Naomi and John Cox's old farm on Hannah Road died in 1928),
Johnny and
his wife Anna whose
parents lived in Luckey, living in Bowling Green- children: Zoe. and Dwight.
Ralph
(R.E.) newly married to Mayme (aka M.E. in the diary)
as 1919 begins and on a trip to New York and Pennsylvania.
Mayme was the mother of three sons: Cortland, Clifford and Albert Nelson
who were in their 20s in 1929. Cortland
married Mary in 1922 and they are the parents of Ralph (aka Buddy) and Nadine. Clifford was married to
Velma. Albert yet lived at home.
Clyde
or"C.H." with his dental practice in Toledo and wife Grace, and
John and Helen and Clyde jr (aka Junior).
Grace's parents sometimes visit the farm when Clyde and
Grace visit: Emma and John Jones.
Jason and
his wife Lorena (aka Rena or Rene) who farm
in Wood county and in 1920 Robert Carl "Bobbie" was born and in 1923
Mary Gene was born.

There are several "Virtual
Cemeteries" on findagrave related to these diaries. A new one is made for 1928-1930.
Will try to add absolutely every one mentioned in these years,
even if
the mention is to note only their burial The first Virtual
Cemetery became unwieldy in size.

but some cloudy. I have done my big ironibg & finished knitting
shawl. Pa cleaned the hen-house. Jason came this evening.
Wed. December 11, 1929
We
went up town this forenoon and did a little shopping. Ralph &
Mayme
went down to see her new Grandson tonight- Clifford's baby (Clifford, Jr). Left Bennie
here. Ran out of gas, made them late.
Thurs. December 12, 1929
Rainy
& icy A.M. & very foggy tonight. Good many accidents. Mr.
McConnell had one this A.M. No one hurt but car some, don't know how
much. A letter from Ethel- all well. We sold 10 doz. eggs .48 yet.
Got
a load of coal.
Fri. December 13, 1929
Warm, rainy and
disagreeable. I have been quite busy at my little work finishing
some
towels & knitting some little mittens. Pa has worked in the shop
some.
Sat. December 14, 1929
Rather nicer than yesterday.
I've been quite busy, baked light biscuit and a big batch of sugar
cookies. Pa has helped me, did the sweeping. He filed his saw
&c.
Sun. December 15, 1929
We have been at home all day and alone till this evening. Clydes

Gene is feeling better.

A dark rainy day. Rained all afternoon nearly. I've been trying to
make some flowers of rubber. Rena making them &
they're awfully pretty. She gave me the material.
Wed. December 18, 1929
Awfully
cold stormy day. Very windy. Jason stopped to see how we were
standing
it. He got along O.K. so bad this A.M. A letter from Ethel. Dons has
moved in.
Thurs. December 19, 1929
We are having lots of snow
all night and today. Drifted awfully bad. The milk trucks are having
hard work getting through. Bus couldn't go. Pa has shoveled all day.
Jason came in. said he only got stuck once.
Fri. December 20, 1929
Another
terrible day, just blew and drifted all day with thermometer round
Zero. About all we can do to keep warm. Sent some greeting & got
some.
Sat. December 21, 1929
Pa dug the snow away so he could
get the machine out & we went up town and did a little more
shopping. Some one came while gone, guess it was Ralphs.
Sun. December 22, 1929
It is some warmer about 20. We have been at home all day &
alone. Most too cold and too much snow to go unless we have to.
Mon. December 23, 1929
Still
quite cold, but pleasant. We washed this A.M. but hung upstairs.
Snow
is very deep. Mrs. Box came over A.M. for eggs. Jason was in this
evening. I'm making rubber flowers.
Tues. December 24, 1929
I
ironed and baked pies & cake & cooked a chicken. Ralph came
this afternoon & brought us each a nice Christmas present. Pa 2
pair of socks- one silk and one wool; and me good for blouse silk
crepe. We had to give up going to Toledo so Ralph wants us to come
up
there.
Wed. December 25, 1929

Christmas" but dangerous driving in place. We went to Ralphs for
dinner. Had a lovely dinner. Corts were there. Rena & kiddies
were
in. Gave me pr. silk & wool hose. Pa a shirt. Jasons went to
Belle's to dinner.
Thurs. December 26, 1929
Getting a little
warmer. Snow begins to settle and thaw some. I've done usual work
and
sewed a little & made some rubber flowers for the girls.
Fri. December 27, 1929
It
is thawing quite fast. Think it will rain before long. Harolds folks
brought Ethel & Dorothy this P.M. Then stopped for them tonight.
Brought a lot more presents, nice ones.
Sat. December 28, 1929
It
has been quite nice but is snowing tonight. Will make the roads bad
again I'm afraid. We have done usual work. I've reas some in a new
book
from Don's "Wild Geese".
Sun. December 29, 1929
Rather
cold. We staid home all day. Clyde's folks came this P.M. Staid to
supper. They brought so many Christmas gifts. Auto robe besides each
one something very nice.
Mon. December 30, 1929
We washed
this morning & the Laundry boy came, I was surprised for I had
told
him 4 weeks ago not to come again. John came this P.M. Had got his
license numbers.

I ironed &
cooked out six lbs of lard trimmings &c that Anna & John
