Naomi DeSelms Cox's 1931 Diary

Farm Life in Plain Township, Wood county, Ohio, continued

Naomi Esther DeSelms Cox born in Ohio October 19, 1855.  She is 75 years old as 1931 begins.

Her diaries from 1911-1938, still in existence, after spending a number of decades in the attic closet of her son Clyde,
are transcribed on these web pages.

She married John Hughes Cox in Wood Co OH 27 April 1879.  She referred to him in the diary as "Pa". The early years of their marriage, (pre diary years) they lived in Perrysburg, on the farm of his parents Joseph and Jane Rebecca Underwood Cox. After the death of the parents they moved to Plain township on Hannah Road, where they lived by 1911.In the spring of 1918 she and "Pa" moved   into the town of Bowling Green to 627 Wallace Avenue. They still owned the farm and son Jason and his family lived there and worked the farm, Pa frequently helping. In 1922 Naomi and Pa  moved back to a  Plain township farm next to where the Thompson's farmed and lived. Their near neighbors included Ernest and Elnora McConnell and their children James, Fannie, John, Walter and Russell. The Thompson household consisted of Earl and Maggie and their son Norman who was 22. By the 1930 census the old Hannah Road neighbors (now called Union Hill Rd), where their son Jason lived, included Bradleys: Wayne, Ortha, son Bobby, and Father George; Frank and Emma Self, Jesse (the sexton of Union Hill cem.) and Jennie Box; the 3 Smith households: Frank, Carrie and Byron; Ralph, Mabel, George and Anne; Dan, Minnie, Clyde and Grace, Harve and India Everett and their daughter Vinnie and son in law William F "Frank" Wammes nearby.

John and Naomi's children and their children, often mentioned in these pages:

Ethel  (living in Toledo with husband Jim Ewing; their children: Hazel the oldest grandchild (who has married Harold Shearer and produced the first Great grandchildren Albert and Catherine, Glenn, Donald, DorothyDoris,  Ralph, and Wesley who was born in 1920.
(Jim's father-  Wesley Ewing, who lived very near Naomi and John Cox's old farm on Hannah Road died in 1928),
Johnny and his wife Anna whose parents lived in Luckey, living in Bowling Green- children: Zoe. and  Dwight.
Ralph (R.E.) newly married to Mayme (aka M.E. in the diary)  as  1919 begins and on a trip to New York and Pennsylvania.
Mayme was the mother of three sons: Cortland, Clifford and Albert Nelson who by 1930 have become parents themselves. Cortland  married Mary in 1922 and they are the parents of Ralph (aka Buddy) and Nadine. Clifford was married to Velma.  Albert yet lived at home.

Clyde or"C.H." with his dental practice in Toledo and wife   Grace, and  John and Helen and Clyde jr (aka Junior).
Grace's parents sometimes visit the farm when Clyde and Grace visit:   Emma and John Jones.

Jason and his wife Lorena  (aka Rena or Rene) who farm in Wood county and in 1920 Robert Carl "Bobbie" was born and in 1923 Mary Gene was born.  In 1930 their hired man Allen Simonds is living in the household as well as Rene's mother Mary Abbott.

There are several "Virtual Cemeteries" on findagrave related to these diaries. A new one is made for 1928-1931. Will try to add absolutely every one mentioned in these years, even if the mention is to note only their burial  The first Virtual Cemetery  called "Naomi's Diary" became unwieldy in size. These diaries have mentioned over 600 different people among family, friends, which included their neighbors from Perrysburg forward, and their children's neighbors, church members from the U.B. church, trades people and other business people.

Notes: Odds are that there are a few bad links, mistakes, etc, here. Please let me know if you catch any, or if you would like to see some additional links, let me know.  (I've gone back over these pages numerous times. It is a simple matter to make corrections additions etc.

Here's a mistake Frank Martin on July 7th... is not the same as the Frank Martin who died in 1929 and buried in Pembervill probably. Oh oh! back to the research drawing board.

I have to laugh at myself. Through all this transcribing of diaries I thought Lake Grange was a place on an actual lake (with water etc) that belonged to the Grange organization where the members would go for special events. I pondered why Jason and Rene or anyone woud go there early in February (ice skating?! :-)) so finally looked it up. It is the Lake TOWNSHIP Grange organization. That clears that up.

Haven't positively ID'd Paul who is a milk man for Jason, got married in 1930 and went to Niagara falls with his bride and Jason & Rene. Haven't heard mention of him in 1931 I think.

There is another Tony besides Tony the Pony of Bobbies. And that is Tony who has come down for chickens with Anna or John in June of 1931.

July 25 "Jason's & Libbie's went to Toledo to Pauls." Haven't got it straight in my head who this Libbie is.

Sun. September 20, 1931
Pa went up to church this A.M. Heard the new minister, Mr. Miller. This was Rev. J Frank Miller who was the U.B. minister at least through 1939, as noted in various sources. Have not positively identified him as to year of birth with parents etc.

Haven't positively identified Binkley. He is not evident in the 1930 census in Wood county unless he is  in the farm implement business, with a son named Daniel.

Don't know who Edna is.  But March 1 states that she is going to California.
Ralph and Mayme's little Bennie is Bennie Harold in the 1930 census a boarder at Ralph's however that is ALL I can find of him so far.

Edith L Norman is the second Edith at Charlies.
