Naomi DeSelms Cox's 1933 Diary
Farm Life in Plain Township, Wood
county, Ohio, continued
Naomi Esther DeSelms Cox born in Ohio
October 19, 1855. She is 77 years old as 1933 begins.
Her diaries from 1911-1938, still in existence, after spending a
number of decades in the attic closet of her son Clyde,
are transcribed on these web
pages.
She married John Hughes Cox
in Wood Co OH 27 April 1879. She referred to him in the
diary as
"Pa".
The early years of their marriage, (pre diary years) they lived in
Perrysburg, on the farm of his parents Joseph and Jane Rebecca
Underwood Cox. After the death of the parents they moved to Plain
township on Hannah Road, where they lived by 1911.In the spring of
1918
she and "Pa" moved
into the town of Bowling Green to 627 Wallace Avenue. They still
owned
the
farm and son Jason and his family lived there and worked the farm,
Pa
frequently helping. In 1922 Naomi and Pa moved back to a
Plain
township farm next to where the Thompson's farmed and lived. Their
near
neighbors included Ernest and Elnora McConnell and their children
James, Fannie, John, Walter and Russell. The Thompson household
consisted of Earl and Maggie and their son Norman who was 22. By
the
1930 census the old Hannah Road neighbors (now called Union Hill
Rd),
where their son Jason lived, included Bradleys: Wayne, Ortha, son
Bobby, and Father George; Frank and Emma Self, Jesse (the sexton
of
Union Hill cem.) and Jennie Box; the 3 Smith households: Frank,
Carrie
and Byron; Ralph, Mabel, George and Anne; Dan, Minnie, Clyde and
Grace,
Harve and India Everett and their daughter Vinnie and son in law
William F "Frank" Wammes nearby.
John
and Naomi's children and their children, often mentioned in
these pages:
Ethel
(living in Toledo with husband Jim Ewing;
their children: Hazel the oldest grandchild (who has
married Harold Shearer and produced the first Great
grandchildren Albert and Catherine, Glenn, Donald, Dorothy, Doris, Ralph, and Wesley who was born in 1920.
(Jim's father- Wesley Ewing, who lived very near
Naomi and John Cox's old farm on Hannah Road died in 1928),
Johnny and
his wife Anna whose
parents lived in Luckey, living in Bowling Green- children: Zoe. and Dwight.
Ralph
(R.E.) newly married to Mayme (aka M.E. in the diary)
as 1919 begins and on a trip to New York and Pennsylvania.
Mayme was the mother of three sons: Cortland, Clifford and Albert Nelson
who by 1930 have become parents themselves. Cortland
married Mary in 1922 and they are the parents of Ralph (aka Buddy) and Nadine. Clifford was married to
Velma. Albert yet lived at home.
Clyde
or"C.H." with his dental practice in Toledo and wife Grace, and
John and Helen and Clyde jr (aka Junior).
Grace's parents sometimes visit the farm when Clyde and
Grace visit: Emma and John Jones.
Jason and
his wife Lorena (aka Rena or Rene) who farm
in Wood county and in 1920 Robert Carl "Bobbie" was born and in 1923
Mary Gene was born. In 1930 their
hired man Allen Simonds is living in the household as well as
Rene's mother Mary Abbott.

indicate my added
notes.***
There are four or more "Virtual
Cemeteries" on findagrave related to these diaries. A new one is
made for 1933-1938.
This is the last five years of the diary, and of Naomi's life.
Will try
to add absolutely every one mentioned in these years, unless there
are
links to them in the paragraphs above, perhaps. The first
Virtual
Cemetery called "Naomi's Diary" became unwieldy in size.
These
diaries have probably mentioned over 700 different people among
family,
friends (and their relatives),
which included their neighbors from Perrysburg forward, and their
children's neighbors, church members from the U.B. church, trades
people and other business people.

Notes:
This is a very little diary the fifth year of a five year diary.
No specific place for weather notation.
Sun. January 1, 1933
We have been home all day. A little cold & blustery. Clydes
folks all came up with the dandiest Christmas basket of fruit-
grapefruit, oranges, bananas, apples, dates 2 boxes, cal. grapes
&
nuts. about 1/2 bu. in all.
Mon. January 2, 1933
Not so cold today. I've sewed quite a bit at piecing. Pa got Jason to come over & help him start the
car. Hasn't used it since we went to Charlies, thought batteries were dead but it
started by using his car.
Tues. January 3, 1933
Pa had to have Jason start the car again so he could go to mill and
get a new battery. One cell was dead. Johnny came tonight. Will leave his car awhile
till he can get the license.
Wed. January 4, 1933
It
has been very nice. I hope we've had our coldest weather for this
winter. We havn't done much but usual work. John went back with
Jason
this A.M. Will work there rest of the week.
Thurs. January 5, 1933

alone.
Sun. January 8, 1933
Pa was sick all night last night

lots
better tonight. We have been alone all day. Jason knew he got hurt
but
not that he was sick. The others didn't know it.
Mon. January 9, 1933
Rather
cold & windy, cloudy & dark. Pa is still feeling awful bad,

any
more like he was.

of beef 10 lbs they butchered, a young one, & 2 qts berries. A

April
19 1933 "Clyde has had his car done over & repainted."
That
is different than previous years. They might detail a car once in
awhile, it gets pretty muddy out there in the country. But they
bought new
(or used) vehicles along the road, some more than others, Jason
getting bigger
trucks, and the car for Rena.
Clyde got 3 different cars at least. The
Packard was a beaut when he got it. That was one to remember or
maybe
its that Dad was at the age to remember. Heck we had a Hudson when
I
was about 4. I rememember that because Dad took the door off the
car when he backed out of the
garage. The problem was I was with him and somehow the door had
not
gotten closed. I surely bore some responsibility in the deal,
rightly or
wrongly ? couldn't really say. But Dad bore all the responsiblity
for
it (particularly as Mom saw it).
Anyways, back to HIS dad, Clyde Sr.... Times Were
Hard in 1933. Or he would
have bought a new car. That's just the way he was.
Mainly the car of
his I remember was a 2 toned Buick, white and blue maybe turquise.
. Buicks had some styling-
the 3
holes on the side of the car- That was
in the late 50s or early 60s. My Dad never drove a Buick. He
was
an Olds man.
But anyways it struck me that even for Grandpa Clyde,
times were hard. I generally didn't have the notion times were
hard for
him. It might be that Clyde jr's folks protected him from that,
although he
did have copied in his handwriting "Mr. Roosevelt is my shepherd,
I
am in want. He leads me besides the still factories.... etc etc...
anyways .....
"Looks
dandy." We talk about The Great Generation- they are the ones who
rose
to the call of WW11. Their numbers on this earth are dwindling
fast.
But you have to give their parents, the next generation back, some
credit for getting their families though the Great Depression as
it came
to be known since FDR didn't know how to, or want to, fix it.
Anyways, the
Great Depression went on, and on, and it hurt a lot of people, and
all
three generations felt
the affects in various ways. But if the little kid wasn't
affected, you
can thank a parent and or a grandparent....
(There were a number of grandparents raising grandkids)
"Looks
dandy." I think Naomi's strength was her family and she loved the
coursing of the seasons and the weather and the crops. She loved
life- living things.
So although she would comment that eggs were a dime, or there
would be
no Christmas remembrances this year, she was not invested in that
to the
point of her soul. She loved her family and the ebb
and flow of the seasons more than anything. "Looks dandy."
