Naomi's Diaries
Naomi DeSelms Cox's 1934 Diary ©
Farm Life in Plain Township, Wood
county, Ohio, continued
Naomi Esther DeSelms Cox born in Ohio
October 19, 1855. She is 78 years old as 1934 begins.
Her diaries from 1911-1938, still in existence, after spending a
number of decades in the attic closet of her son Clyde,
are transcribed on these web
pages.
She married John Hughes Cox
in Wood Co OH 27 April 1879. She referred to him in the
diary as
"Pa".
The early years of their marriage, (pre diary years) they lived in
Perrysburg, on the farm of his parents Joseph and Jane Rebecca
Underwood Cox. After the death of the parents they moved to Plain
township on Hannah Road, where they lived by 1911. In the spring
of 1918
she and "Pa" moved into the town of Bowling Green to 627 Wallace
Avenue. They still owned
the
farm and son Jason and his family lived there and worked the farm,
Pa
frequently helping. In 1922 Naomi and Pa moved back to a
Plain
township farm next to where the Thompson's farmed and lived. Their
near
neighbors included Ernest and Elnora McConnell and their children
James, Fannie, John, Walter and Russell. The Thompson household
consisted of Earl and Maggie and their grown son Norman. By the
1930 census the old Hannah Road neighbors (now called Union Hill
Rd),
where their son Jason lived, included Bradleys: Wayne, Ortha, son
Bobby, and Father George; Frank and Emma Self, Jesse (the sexton
of
Union Hill cem.) and Jennie Box; the 3 Smith households: Frank,
Carrie
and Byron; Ralph, Mabel, George and Anne; Dan, Minnie, Clyde and
Grace,
Harve and India Everett and their daughter Vinnie and son in law
William F "Frank" Wammes nearby, though Harve passed away in 1930.
John
and Naomi's children and their children, often mentioned in
these pages:
Ethel
(living in Toledo with husband Jim Ewing;
their children: Hazel the oldest grandchild (who has
married Harold Shearer and produced the first Great
grandchildren Albert and Catherine, Glenn, Donald, Dorothy, Doris, Ralph, and Wesley who was born in 1920.
(Jim's father- Wesley Ewing, who lived very near
Naomi and John Cox's old farm on Hannah Road died in 1928),
Johnny and
his wife Anna whose
parents lived in Luckey, living in Bowling Green- children: Zoe. and Dwight.
Ralph
(R.E.) newly married to Mayme (aka M.E. in the diary)
as 1919 begins and on a trip to New York and Pennsylvania.
Mayme was the mother of three sons: Cortland, Clifford and Albert Nelson
who by 1930 have become parents themselves. Cortland
married Mary in 1922 and they are the parents of Ralph (aka Buddy) and Nadine. Clifford was married to
Velma. Albert yet lived at home.
Clyde
or"C.H." with his dental practice in Toledo and wife Grace, and
John and Helen and Clyde jr (aka Junior).
Grace's parents sometimes visit the farm when Clyde and
Grace visit: Emma and John Jones.
Jason and
his wife Lorena (aka Rena or Rene) who farm
in Wood county and Robert Carl "Bobbie" and Mary Gene .
By
1934, Jason has moved elsewhere in Plain twp. and the homeplace
is
rented to Mrs Musser who has become a widow and remarried to Al
Simonds. There is talk about renting out the place where John
and Naomi
live as it is getting difficult for them to keep up with
everything.

and other web sites that may be of interest. Italics

notes.***
There are four or more "Virtual
Cemeteries" on findagrave related to these diaries. A new one is
made for 1933-1938.
This is the last five years of the diary, and of Naomi's life.
Will try
to add absolutely every one mentioned in these years, unless there
are
links to them in the paragraphs above, perhaps. The first
Virtual
Cemetery called "Naomi's Diary" became unwieldy in size.
These
diaries have probably mentioned over 700 different people among
family,
friends (and their relatives),
which included their neighbors from Perrysburg forward, and their
children's neighbors, church members from the U.B. church, trades
people and other business people.
Mon. January 1, 1934
We
are now starting on a New Year and hope it will prove a more
Prosperous
one than the past & with all the new ways started to give people
work. Johnny applied, got a job at Carpenter work.
It's been dark &
rained some. No one came. We had a chicken dinner though.
Tues. January 2, 1934
A
little colder today in the twenties all day. We washed but hung
clothes
up stairs as I don't like to go out in the cold as I don't feel so
very
good. Pa had to fix the cistern pump this P.M. Went
over to Jason for a
pipe wrench.
Wed. January 3, 1934
It has been moderatedly
cold, but cloudy all forenoon but brightened up some this P.M. Pa
hauled up 3 loads of wood in the car. Too bad to us its that way but
is
sure it don't hurt it.
Thurs. January 4, 1934
It has been
quite nice to work and Pa has hauled 4 more loads of wood but has
been
cloudy & is raining now tonight & he feels glad its done.
Brooks got 16 1/2 doz. eggs, 16 cts now. Our
Blade (Toledo Blade newspaper)
just
came. Jason sent before Christmas. this is 3rd year

it. Lorin DeSelms little boy was buried today at Weston Cemetery.

quite a bit last night but quite pleasant, only cloudy, up to 34

Grange books.

town with Pa today but pieced a little. Jim, Ethel and Hazels children stopped a bit. Harold has work with C.W.A. now over on the Dixie.
Sun. January 7, 1934

sick coming down. Jason heard Mrs. Bense died. Funeral tomorrow.
Tues. January 9, 1934
Cloudy again. Pa went over, found the children better but Bob's cold is
bad yet. She had them piecing to keep them quiet in the house. They
are
real interested- it's new work. (My
Dad, Clyde Cox Jr (aka Junior), fondly recalled doing this with
Grandma Cox when he visited the farm)

We
have been alone all day. A dark cloudy day with some rain &
quite
warm, somewhere in 40s. I've felt so tired all the time, lain down a
good deal.
Mon. March 5, 1934
Dark
& cloudy with a little rain. I feel so little like work thought
I'd
let piecing & such go awhile & read a book, so many. I
havn't
read for years.
Tues. March 6, 1934
A card from Ethel. They spent their Anniversary & her Birthday
with Dorothy & Ralph. I finished St. Elmo, feel rested and think I can work
now.
Wed. March 7, 1934
Pa
went to mill. The grinder doesn't come since it got so cold. Jasons
has
butchered a pig & sent up quite a bit, and Pa had got a little
so I
canned 6 pts. Will help us out better if it keeps quite nice. I
walked

corn. He got 54 cts. & they hauled it. We went to Jasons awhile
this evening. Mussers are beginning to move, taking
everything that isn't nailed fast, even the fences.
Thurs. March 15, 1934
The
same fellows took our corn at 2 loads that took Jasons, a great
crop.
It seems like 2 wasted years for us and worse, for the place is left
in
such a condition for someone else. Mildred Cole and her husband Mr. (Kenneth) Wenig
are going on it. Brooks got 38 doz. at 15 cts. We had sold 12 doz.
to the children. We got 98 eggs today.
Fri. March 16, 1934
Jason
brought Pa's corn check $98. So we went up town and paid his taxes
$121.00. we had nearly as much saved from our little place, paid out
lots too, as we got there, so we can pay in other places. Jason
&
Rena went on to Toledo. I saw Mrs. Reider & Mrs. Hale.
Sat. March 17, 1934
It
has been real warm with a thunderstorm tonight. Mussers got out
yesterday with everything they could take off the buildings- all the
barn windows. Jason was awfully put out, well as we, and was going
up
town to see what could be done about it but Lester talked him out of it. Said it would
amount to more than they stole. Lester, Lawrence & wife
all helping Mildred & Kenneth more & are quite nicely
settled.
Will sleep there tonight. I'm so glad. Jason lost his corn check;
they
gave him another.
Sun. March 18, 1934

awhile. Said he had taken Rena to the Dr. this A.M. Clyde &
Grace
came quite late.
Mon. March 19, 1934
Jason came & took Pa
up to see someone about getting his barn windows back. They sent a
Constable. Jason went with him, brought them back to town. Will have
a
hearing tomorrow. Pa couldn't let it go that way & get new ones.
Rena has quite a fever this A.M. It's the flu Dr. says. Mrs. Musser
declared those were her windows, she had bought and brought them
there.
Don't know how they'll come out, what they'll do but they'll swear
to
most anything.
Tues. March 20, 1934
Jason & Pa were up
town P.M. Won't have their hearing till Thursday. Mussers want more
time. Ralph came & met them in town, Pa & Jason. I went to
see
Mrs. McConnell. She has got home from the Hospital. Rena is better
but
Jason did the washing this A.M.
Wed. March 21, 1934

rainy looking but cleared up nice & bright. Mr. Thompson was in awhile P.M. Pa commenced
trimming the grapes. Jasons stopped awhile. Mrs. McConnell went back
to Hospital.
Thurs. March 22, 1934
Turned awfully cold, close to Zero. That hearing came off this P.M.
in Pa's favor. Al & Mrs. has to pay cost and fined $5. apiece
right away, will soon get windows back in barn,
Fri. March 23, 1934
Another cold day. Jason went over and got Pa's load of hay from Ray LeGalley's this P.M. Pa has only done
chores & help unload the hay. I've mended & read some- a new
magazine came A.M.
Sat. March 24, 1934
Glenn, Helen, Ethel, & Uncle
Charlie came this P.M. Glenn took Ethel on up to see Hazels a
little while, the children have been ailing, but are better. Harold is in Detroit getting started on a job.
Helen's and Glenn's babies are nice.
Sun. March 25, 1934
It has been quite nice but rather a cold wind. Ralphs folks with Velmas & 2 kiddies stopped on way from
Toledo. Then later Jason came in awhile. Rena stopped A.M. for eggs.
Mon. March 26 1934
A
very bad day, snowed, rained & froze fast as it fell. Mr.
McConnell
came down awhile. Says she wil stay at the Hospital now till the
