Naomi's Diaries
Naomi DeSelms Cox's 1935 Diary ©
Farm Life in Plain Township, Wood
county, Ohio, continued
Naomi Esther DeSelms Cox born in Ohio
October 19, 1855. She is 79 years old as 1935 begins.
Her diaries from 1911-1938, still in existence, after spending a
number of decades in the attic closet of her son Clyde,
are transcribed on these web
pages.
She married John Hughes Cox
in Wood Co OH 27 April 1879. She referred to him in the
diary as
"Pa".
The early years of their marriage, (pre diary years) they lived in
Perrysburg, on the farm of his parents Joseph and Jane Rebecca
Underwood Cox. After the death of the parents they moved to
Plain
township on Hannah Road, where they lived by 1911. In the spring
of 1918
she and "Pa" moved into the town of Bowling Green to 627 Wallace
Avenue. They still owned
the
farm and son Jason and his family lived there and worked the farm,
Pa
frequently helping. In 1922 Naomi and Pa moved back to a
Plain
township farm next to where the Thompson's farmed and lived. Their
near
neighbors included Ernest and Elnora McConnell and their children
James, Fannie, John, Walter and Russell. The
Thompson household
consisted of Earl and Maggie and their grown son Norman. By the
1930 census the old Hannah Road neighbors (now called Union Hill
Rd),
where their son Jason lived, included Bradleys: Wayne, Ortha, son
Bobby, and Father George (died in 1931); Frank and Emma Self, Jesse (the sexton of
Union Hill cem.) and Jennie Box; the 3 Smith households: Frank, Carrie
and Byron; Ralph, Mabel, George and Anne; Dan, Minnie, Clyde and Grace,
Harve and Inda Everett and their daughter Vinnie and son in law
William F "Frank" Wammes nearby, though
Harve passed away in 1930. In 1934 Kenneth and his wife Mildred Cole Wenig began to farm at Ma and
Pa's old homeplace and they did a fine job of it. Mildred's mother is the sister of Jim Ewing who is Ethel Cox's husband.
John
and Naomi's children and their children, often mentioned in
these pages:
Ethel
(living in Toledo with husband Jim Ewing;
their children: Hazel the oldest grandchild (who has
married Harold Shearer and their children Albert and Catherine) Glenn and his wife Helen; Donald and his wife Hazel; Dorothy
and her husband Ralph Rowley; Doris and her husband Joe Bella; Ralph, born in 1915 and the youngest Wesley who was born in 1920.
Johnny and
his wife Anna -
children: Zoe. (married to Bill Wilson, their son Billy and 3
daughters) and Dwight.
Ralph
(R.E.) and his wife Mayme (M.E.) mother of three sons: Cortland, Clifford and Albert Nelson
Cortland & Mary are the parents of Ralph (aka Buddy) and Nadine and Kathleen. Clifford and Velma, the parents of Mell, Dale and Cliff
Jr.
Clyde
living in Toledo and wife Grace, and
children John and Helen and Clyde jr (aka Junior).
Grace's parents sometimes visit the farm when Clyde and
Grace visit: Emma and John Jones.
Jason and
his wife Lorena
(aka Rena or Rene) who farm near enough that their kids
ride
their bikes or drive the car over as young teams, and you can
see the
dust as thrashing is going on over the high corn that blocks
lower
vision. Children: Robert Carl "Bobbie" and Mary Gene .
As
1935 begins, Naomi and Pa are still living on the farm but Pa
has taken
sick with the flu and with his weak heart the kids are caring
for them
and running the farm. The Thompsons and McConnells are still
their
nearest neighbors. As of 1934 Kenneth and Mildred Cole Wenig
rented the
old home place, and have been doing a great job of farming
there.

Feb
24 sounds like Powell is the Dr. I had thought that was true at
one
point years ago. I think the regular doc is Dr. Halleck though. An
earlier U.B. preacher was Rev Powell, so this is a little
confusing.
They almost always call him Dr rather than with a surname.
Think
I've seen the Halleck name once.
April-
May just not sure who this Dan is. but he is coming by regularly.
I
think it is always Dan Stoner but not always sure. He seems to be
the
husband of Catherine who is helping them and they have some
relationship to Browns ?? Browns live nearby - they
all
live on Brim Rd I think. and one Brown is Mrs Wm (LaVon)
Canterbury's
brother.
as of Dec 23 1933 Paul and wife are back... Paul drives
longer distance truck sometimes sharing a job with Jason.
Sanders mentioned in the autumn 1934 and December several times as
well.
Just
a word about McConnells who have been such wonderful and present
neighbors. (from the 1920 census) Dad-
Charles Ernest born in MI about 1880. Elnora his wife born about
1883.
Son James born about 1913. Fannie born about 1915. John born about
1914. As far back as 1920, they were enumerated by
Thompsons:
Dad: Earl Thompson born about 1858, Mom: Maggie
born about 1869, daughter Mary born about 1887, son Wayne born
about
1905, and Norman born about 1908. (He is the Norman mentioned this
year, 1934).
