Widowhood in Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio

Naomi Esther DeSelms Cox born in Ohio October 19, 1855.  She is 81 years old as 1937 begins.

Her diaries from 1911-1938, still in existence, after spending a number of decades in the attic closet of her son Clyde,
are transcribed on these web pages.

This is a different kind of year for Naomi. She married John Hughes Cox in Wood Co OH 27 April 1879 and they were married for 57 years. They farmed in Wood county Ohio up until last year when John, whom she referred to in her diaries as "Pa" took ill .  After a hard winter, a year ago, and flu from which he never recovered, took the strength from Pa, Naomi and John moved into the home of  their oldest child, Ethel and her husband Jim Ewing in Toledo. John "Pa" and Naomi's children shared resposibilities, so that John and Naomi would make the rounds visiting at their children's homes, allowing breaks or vacation times as necessary.   Pa passed away on December 12, 1936. As 1937 begins, Naomi in living at Ethels and Jim's in Toledo at 1321 Varland (right by Navarre Park).

John and Naomi's children and their children, often mentioned in these pages:

Ethel  and Jim Ewing; their 7 children: Hazel the oldest grandchild (who has married Harold Shearer and their children Albert and Catherine) Glenn and his wife HelenDonald and his wife HazelDorothy and her husband Ralph Rowley;  Doris and her husband Joe Bella;   Ralph, born in 1915 and the youngest Wesley who was born in 1920.

Johnny and his wife Anna - children: Zoe. (married to Bill Wilson, their son Billy and 3 daughters) and  Dwight.

Ralph (R.E.) and his wife Mayme (M.E.)  mother of three sons: Cortland, Clifford and Albert Nelson
Cortland & Mary are the parents of Ralph (aka Buddy) and Nadine and Kathleen. Clifford and Velma, the parents of Mell, Dale and Cliff Jr.

Clyde  living in Toledo and wife   Grace, and children  John and Helen and Clyde jr (aka Junior).
Grace's parents also mentioned, and living in Toledo:   Emma and John Jones.

Jason and his wife Lorena  (aka Rena or Rene) still live and farm in Wood county, and take responsibility for the old farm place which is nearby and this brings in what ever money there is for Naomi to live on. Children: Robert Carl "Bobbie" and Mary Gene .

As 1937 begins, Naomi in living at Ethels. Pa had passed away on December 12th of the previous month.

The 1937 Diary of
 Naomi Esther DeSelms Cox

Iva Cook: Mentioned Dec 1 1936 andJan 19, 1937
In 1930 Iva L Cook was a 60yo widow who owned her home at 1851 Wayne st in Toledo. She was also mentioned late in 1936 in Toledo. She must be a friend of Ewings, a church aquaintance, or her son Kenneth was a friend of the Ewing children.
Her son's death was mentioned in Naomi's diary in 1929. He was Kenneth Cook

Sometimes I question which Hazel Naomi is mentioning. There are two. Her oldest grandchild is Ethel's daughter, Hazel Ewing Shearer, 37 who is married to Harold and their children are Albert and Catherine. She was around quite a bit in May, helping her mom when when Ethel wasn't feeling her best.

Ethel's son Don Ewings wife is Hazel Fassler Ewing, they got married in 1928 and are the parents of Jimmy and Nancy, and they are mentioned with some frequency too, though don't hear the children's names mentioned so much but they are younger than Albert and Catherine Shearer.

Maybe Omans are Kennard and Viola. In 1940 they lived in town and he was the manager of a greain elevator. Their children were 12 and 10. Sounds like it could be them.
