Her diaries from 1911-1938, still in existence, after spending a

into
the home of their oldest child, Ethel and her husband Jim
Ewing
in Toledo. John "Pa" and Naomi's children shared resposibilities,
so that
John and Naomi would make the rounds visiting at their children's
homes, allowing breaks or vacation times as necessary. Pa passed away on December
12, 1936. As
1937 begins, Naomi in living at Ethels and Jim's in Toledo at

I'll
have him keep it with his others. He has several. He is good at it.
(Note:
I recall seeing several he tinted- one was of a stream and wooded
rise
beyond a field along a road in North Carolina. also portraits, as

Mon. April 26, 1937

Birthday 37. This would have been our 58th Anniversary; quite a few-
only memories now. Dons found their house had to be fumigated for

It
has been a lovely day. The men are working hard getting in the corn,
too wet this A.M. They made a foot bridge. I went with Rena to
Haskins
with cream. Saw Essie, she says Rose is by herself again; left her place.
Tues. May 25, 1937
Jason

at
a time.

They got to work about an hour
early when they had to quite it got so wet. Couldn't go out again.

Another nice day, they're very busy. Finished his corn, got ground
ready for tomatoes, set some before noon. Rena helped and Billie Wammes P.M. Our field of corn must be
planted over, the hard rain, then so hot, crusted the ground so it
can't come through, too bad.
Wed. June 2, 1937
Another nice day. Set tomatoes all day, Vinnie's
boy helped, Rena didn't. The last day of school up town. I havn't
felt
very good, crocheted some, took a nap. Looks a little rainy. Jason

Thurs. June 3, 1937
They
got the plants set, a tedious job, 12 acres and all look nice so
far.
Rena and Mary Gene went to her Club tonight. I went over with the

tore
up & done over tho. Just too bad and so much to do.

Jason
went early, got his seed corn and Bob went to getting the ground
ready
to plant. After corn was ready & he had got to planting, Rena
took
M.G. to Clydes about her teeth and I came along home. Good to get
back.

now
it seems more like home and I believe they were glad to have me get
back.

started
again. Ethel and I went to Mrs McArrians to a class party, when over
it
was raining hard. Wesley too and came for us.

I quilted some. It's just a common basket pattern
but thot I'd quilt and use it, I like it anyway. After supper, I
went
with them out to Doris' and round by Dorothys and by Glenns. They
were
both away but Dorothys came in after we came back, all have lovely
yards, brought bunch of roses.
Fri. June 11, 1937
It has been
a little cool but pleasant. I havn't felt very good some of the

myself

Iva Cook: Mentioned Dec 1 1936 andJan 19, 1937
In
1930 Iva L Cook was a 60yo widow who owned her home at 1851 Wayne
st in
Toledo. She was also mentioned late in 1936 in Toledo. She must be
a
friend of Ewings, a church aquaintance, or her son Kenneth was a
friend
of the Ewing children.
Her son's death was mentioned in Naomi's diary in 1929. He was Kenneth Cook
Sometimes
I question which Hazel Naomi is mentioning. There are two. Her
oldest
grandchild is Ethel's daughter, Hazel Ewing Shearer, 37 who is
married
to Harold and their children are Albert and Catherine. She was
around
quite a bit in May, helping her mom when when Ethel wasn't feeling
her
best.
Ethel's son Don Ewings wife is Hazel Fassler Ewing, they
got married in 1928 and are the parents of Jimmy and Nancy, and
they
are mentioned with some frequency too, though don't hear the
children's
names mentioned so much but they are younger than Albert and
Catherine
Shearer.
Maybe Omans are Kennard and Viola.
In 1940 they lived in town and he was the manager of a greain
elevator.
Their children were 12 and 10. Sounds like it could be them.
