Sir Edwin John's gambling debt.

This report from Australia's 'Melbourne Argus' newspaper.

'Paris.    6/11/ 1922'

"Sir Edwin John, a cotton magnate of Agra, India, was sentenced in his absense to 3 months imprisonement and fined £4000 on a charge of having paid gambling debts with cheques which were subsequently dishonoured.
He was described in evidence as 'an inveterate frequenter of the tables, a model gambler who never smiled whether he was winning or losing millions'  He is immensely wealthy.
Lady John, who is in a nursing home in London, says that her husband returned from India and first frequented the European gaming tables two years ago.
A London solicitor states that he advised Sir Edwin John to pay his gambling debt with cheques which would not be met.
Sir Edwin was knighted last new year."

A further article dated the same day was also published:

"Sir Edwin John's solicitor,  says that he has always advised his clients to refuse to pay gambling debts for which they are likely to be sued.
He repeatedly invited Sir Edwin John's creditors to take action in the English courts where he would have resisted the proceedings.
If the creditors had discussed the debts as debts of honour he would have agreed to consult the members of the famiy in order to discover a means by which they could be met.
French courts have no jurisdiction over Sir Edwin John.
If he returned to Paris he might be imprisoned, but it is more likely that the case would be reopened.
It is perfectly understood that there has never been the slightest suggestion of dishonourabl conduct on his part."
