THE CANDYS

The earliest record for this family is from Warminster in Wiltshire, and then in Somerset. Many baptised their children with the same names, particularly Christopher, John, Thomas and Richard.
This family is found in the villages of Winford, Cloford, Kilmersden, East Cranmore, West Cranmore, Wanstrow and Doulting which are all close together in Somerset.

Christopher Candy [1]  1552 – 1612  was married in Warminster on 12/01/1571 to Alis Due  1555 – 1573
There are Indenture records of 1577 showing him to be from Norton Bavant and to be a weaver. They had a son:
                      1/ Thomas [1] baptised in Warminster  05/04/1573

Thomas Candy [1]  had a son
                      1/ Christopher [2] b. 1595.  He was left 48 shillings by his grandfather Christopher [1]

Christopher Candy [2] was married in Frome in Somerset 28/04/1617 to  Sarah Luckocks  b.1598
they had 5 children:
                      1/ Sarah  b. 06/04/1618
                      2/ William  1620 - 1629
                      3/ Christopher  bapt. 13/03/1625, buried 14/08/1625  in Frome
                      4/ Christopher [3]  bapt. 16/09/1627, buried 12/09/1689  in Frome
                      5/ Thomas  1636 – 1638

Christopher Candy
[3] married 1655 Ann Barefoot [ she died in 1678 ] they lived in Cloford  and had 5 children:

                    1/ Katherine  b. 1662,  buried 0n 22/05/1664 in Frome
                    2/ Joan  b.1663,  buried on 20/03/1664
                    3/ William  bapt. 22/02/1665, he died in 1665
                    4/ Christopher [4] bapt. 04/04/1670, he was buried on 18/03/1716
                    5/ John bapt. 08/02/1672, he married Mary and they had 11 children.  She was buried on 08/03/ 1716.

Christopher Candy [4] was married in Cloford in 1694 to  Kimbera  [1672 – 1716 ]  they had 5 children:

                    1/ Christopher  1695 – 1785, he married Elizabeth Smethwick
                    2/ Kimbera b. 1699, she married Thomas Ball of Cloford, she was buried 13/01/1768 
                    3/ Thomas  1701 - 1755   He had a daughter Betty who married a John Candy in 1761 [probably a cousin]
                    4/ Richard 23/04/1704 – 1787,  he married Hannah Ball in 1725 
                    5/ John 1714 – 1722

Richard Candy and Hannah Ball had 4 children:

                    1/ John  1729 -1730
                    2/ John  27/02/1731  -  15/06/1773 
                    3/ Mary b. 1739
                    4/ Richard b. 1742

John Candy was married 04/05/1761 in East Cranmore to his cousin Betty Candy  1738 – 1779  she was the daughter of his uncle Thomas Candy.
They had 1 son
                        Thomas [4] born on 05/01/1765 in Wanstrow.

Thomas Candy [4] was married in Wanstrow on 28/04/1791 to  Martha Yeoman  She was born on 30/11/1766  in Nunney, she died in 1827
They lived in Doulting and Kilmersden and had 8 children:

                    1/ William  b. 1791
                    2/ Elizabeth  b. 1793
                    3/ Mary  b. 1795
                    4/ Ann  bapt. 29/04/1798 in Doulting, she  married  James Morgan in Kilmersden  on 02/04/1818.  She died in 1852
                    5/ Martha  1800 - 1878
                    6/ John  1802 – 1872   m. Mary
                    7/ James  1805 – 1885, he married Mary Ann Branch
                    8/ Jane  b. 1809
