Wills
are a fascinating insight in to the lives of long ago. I have
transcribed the majority of these Wills as they are generally quite
hard to read, written at a time when spelling was different,
often
with extra or now defunct letters.
One Will for example has every letter 'd' written looking like a 'b', another employed flowery capital letters to virtually every word except for the pronouns, showing letters bearing no likeness to the ones we know today.
The London families
1/ NICHOLAS WINCKWORTH. Will dated 1767 and proved in 1773
Nicholas is the brother of Benjamin [1], he leaves money to another brother John as well as to his nieces & nephew, the children of Benjamin.
2/ BENJAMIN WINCKWORTH [1]. Will dated 1774 and proved in 1778
This Will tells us about his business, property and his wealth, and also that he remembers his servants as well.
3/ MARY WINCKWORTH. Will dated 1780 and proved in 1784
Mary was the daughter of Benjamin [1], her Will contains more personal details about her bequests.
4/ MARY RANDALL WINCKWORTH. Will written and proved in 1784
Mary was the wife of Benjamin [1] her Will also contains personal bequests.
5/ BENJAMIN WINCKWORTH [2]. Will dated 1791 and proved in 1796
6/ MARY TILDEN WINCKWORTH. Will written and proved 1800
Mary was the wife of Benjamin [2]
The Kent Families
7/ JOHN TILDEN. Will written in 1770 and proved in 1778
John was the father of Mary Tilden who married Benjamin Winckworth [2]
8/ JOHN PREBBLE. Will written in 1811 and proved on 22/07/1813
This is a very long Will, the original ran to 17 pages, it is interesting because it details legacies to the children from both of his marriages, including his daughter Mary Anne who
married Benjamin Winckworth [3]
9/ RICHARD PREBBLE. Will written on 20/01/1819 and proved on 08/03/1821
Richard was the son of John Prebble, his legacies are only given to his siblings, the children from John Prebble's first marriage.
The Dorset Families
10/ ROBERT COOMBES. Will dated 1708 proved in 1716
Robert was the father of Jane Coombes who married Richard Kaines. His legacy to his son Robert was made with proviso's regarding his behaviour.
11/ RICHARD KAINES. Will dated 1719 / 1720
12/ JANE COOMBES KAINES. Will dated 1750 and proved in 1754
Jane was the wife of Richard Kaines & mother of Henry & his brother Robert.
This Will shows that there was some ill feeling between the 2 brothers and perhaps also between Robert and his mother regarding his debts.
13/ HENRY KAINES. Will dated 1751 and proved in 1752
He was the son of Richard & Jane Kaines
14/ ROBERT KAINES. Will dated 07/08/1755 and proved 01/08/1756
He was the brother of Henry Kaines and married to Martha Bewnel
15/ RICHARD STEVENS. Will dated 1808
Richard married Jane Clavell and was the father of Martha Bewnell Stevens who married Robert Tripp
16/ RICHARD SLADE. Will dated 1713
[ DAVID SLADE. See his Will dated 1742 on the Slade family page. ]
William & Jane Clavell are the parents of Jane Clavell who married Richard Stevens.
Although Jane died before both of her parents I have included these two Wills as I found they were interesting, and they show that I have made the right connections.
I was also fascinated by the instructions written by Jane regarding their son Edward.
17/ WILLIAM CLAVELL Will dated 1795 and proved in 1796
18/ JANE CLAVELL. Will dated 1804 and proved in 1811
One Will for example has every letter 'd' written looking like a 'b', another employed flowery capital letters to virtually every word except for the pronouns, showing letters bearing no likeness to the ones we know today.
