The Brettells that I am most interested in are James and Phebe (Brookes), married 19/04/1813 at Saint Thomas, Dudley, whose daughter Ann married Isaac Hingley. I have not yet found out any more about James, other than born in the 1780s in Worcestershire (1841 census, when they were living in Park Lane, Cradley). My best guess (IGI only) is that James was the son of Joseph Brettle and Ann Taylor (one of his sisters had a middle name Taylor) who married on 29 January 1781 at St. Phillipps, Birmingham. Then the trail cools, although there are two likely candidates for Joseph in Old Swinford in the 1750s.

Also Ann BARNETT estimated birth year 1814 for (from the 1851 census) marrying Solomon Brettle on 20 June 1832 at Clent, shortly after giving birth to Reuben Brettle. They subsequently had Edward and Sarah and in 1841 she married Thomas CRAMPTON, having been widowed by Solomon's death in late 1837 (Deaths Sep 1837 Brettell Solomon Stourbridge 18 280 according to FreeBMD).

My interest is in Reuben (born 18 Apr 1832), who married Harriott MOORE 25/12/1852, and whose son Joseph had another Reuben. This Reuben married Florence May GUEST in 1909. This is all in Cradley.

Also, I have Nathan Brettle and Elizabeth Bastefield in my family tree, by virtue of Sara Basterfield in Elizabeth's family marrying Joseph Attwood, a brother of my great, great, great grandfather, James Attwood (1799-1892).

Penny's family came from The Lye and Cradley. We have traced the line back to Samuel Brettell (c.1793-1877), master bricklayer and builder of Two Gates, Cradley and Honor COOK (c.1795-1872). They had ten children, Penny is descended from Henry (1830-1870) and Mary Maria LASHFORD, some of their eight children later lived in Middlesborough, Yorkshire. We believe that Samuel also had family connections with the Brettells of Chawn Hill, Stourbridge.
