(10) JOSEPH PALMER

Born: about 1656/7 probably in Newton (Middleboro), N. Y.

Died: probably early 1724/25

Married: Elizabeth Tyler.  Born 1663 in Milford, Conn. Daughter of William Tyler of Milford, Conn.  Elizabeth was a sister of Mary Tyler who married William Palmer, brother of Joseph.  The probate recodr of William Tyler of Milford, Conn. in 1692 listed daughter Mary, age 32, born 1660, and daughter Elizabeth, age 29, born 1663.  William Tyler was of the New Haven colony early and went to Milford in 1657.  William Tyler also had a son Peter, who married Deborah Swain 20Nov1671, daughter of Daniel and Dorcas (Rose) Swain of Branford. This Peter probably married for his second wife Hannah Whitehead 25Dec1688. This probably accounts for the name of Peter being given to a son of William Palmer, who married Mary Tyler.

The first record of Joseph is found in Greenwich when he was granted land on 20Aug1689.  He appeared on the tax list in 1696 for 28 pounds and again on the tax list in 1714.  On 17Apr1690 he made a deed of gift to "my loving brother William Palmer" and on 14Aug1704 James Palmer deeded to "my brother Joseph Palmer".  He was one of the origional proprietors of the first purchase of Bedford patent in Westchester Co., N. Y. and was granted one head right.  He received No. 11of the 50 acre lots on 30Jun1708.  On 18May1702 Joseph Palmer of Greenwich exchanged deeds on his house and homestead in Bedford and 8 acres of upland with Cornelius Selly Jr. for his house in Bedford and 4 acres.  On 16Nov1703 Joseph Palmer Sr. of Bedford and wife Elizabeth deeded to Zachariah Roberts Sr. of the same place all of the home lot that was formerly owned by Mr. Thomas Denham in Bedford and 4 acres of land .  On 23Mar1719 Joseph Palmer of Greenwich and Elizabeth deeded to Samuel Mills of the same place his right in the west new purchase of 50 acres and one lot of 8 acres and other parcels and all rights belonging to him on Bedford.  He was also one of the organizers of the church in Bedford in 1695.  He evidently lived there for a time.  On 04Feb1719/20 Joseph Palmer Sr. of Greenwich deeded to his son Joseph Jr. of Greenwich "all lands and dwelling house reserving 1/2 of the fruit of the orchard for his wife's life".  On 06Mar1721/22 Joseph Sr. deeded to Joseph Jr. more land.  On 04Mar1724/25 Joseph Palmer of Greenwich deeded to Gershom Lockwood land "being a part of the right of Joseph Palmer late of Greenwich deceased". Also a deed to William Palmer dated 10Mar1724/25 with the same recital.  Joseph Sr., therefore, probably died between the time he deeded his property to his son, the last deed being dated 06Mar1721/22, and the date of the deed of Joseph Jr. dated 04Mar1724/25 to Gershom Lockwood, reciting that his father was dead. No probate records appear.
