(11) JOSEPH PALMER

Born: about 1695 in Greenwich, Conn.

Died: probably in Nine Partners, Dutchess Co., N. Y.

Married: Martha Knapp 29Feb1720/21 in Greenwich, Conn.  Born: 28Feb1701/02 in Greenwich, Conn.  Daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Butler) Knapp of Greenwich, Conn.

The first record of Joseph is found when his father deeded his lands and dwelling house to him on 04Feb1719/20.  On 23Oct1728 Joseph and his wife Martha deeded land in Greenwich.  On 05Feb1730/31, Joseph joined with other inhabitants of Horsenecks and Stamford at the school house on North Street in Greenwich to build a Presbyterian Church on said North Street, and he subscribed one pound, and Samuel Palmer, his cousin, subscribed two pounds.  On 03Jan1737/38 Joseph and wife Martha signed a bond on behalf of her brother, Daniel Knapp, in a probate proceeding on 19Feb1738/39 Peter Palmer of Greenwich quit-claimed to Joseph Palmer of Greenwich all of his interests in "my late Uncle John Palmer's estate deceased below ye county road".  Joseph was in the tax lists of Greenwich for each of the years from 1734 to 1738, inclusive.  On 19Feb1739/40 Joseph Palmer of Filkintown, Dutch. Co., N. Y. deeded to Jonathan Lockwood, Jr. of Greenwich land in the Stanwich Society of Greenwich and on 26Feb1739/40 Jonathan Lockwood, Jr., in a deed under that date, recited that Joseph Palmer, late of Greenwich, now of Filkintown, Dutch. Co., sold to him land in Stanwich Society of Greenwich.  In 1740 a census of the heads of families in Dutchess Co., N. Y. showed Joseph Palmer and also his son Joshua Palmer, together with others including William Palmer, Peter Palmer, and Samuel Palmer, all of Greenwich. This clearly shows that Joseph disposed of all his property in Greenwich in the early part of 1740 and moved to that section of Dutchess County known as the Nine Partners, which was also at that time known as Filkintown.  A deed dated 08Feb1749/50 by Joseph of Dutchess Co. recites that he deeded land in Lot 25 of the Great Nine Partners and mentioned his wife Martha.  Records of Crum Elbow Precinct show that earmarks of Joseph Palmer were first recorded on 30Dec1739.  There is no record of the death of either Joseph or his wife Martha, but it is very evident that, having moved to Dutchess Co., they continued to live there the rest of their lives as their children continued to live in that county and raise their families there.  Benjamin Knapp, father of Martha, was a son of Joshua Knapp, who married Hanna Close.  This is the Hanna Close who was a widow and married as her second husband John Bowers, being the third wife of John Bowers.  This John Bowers was the third husband of Judith Feake Palmer.  Joshua Knapp was the son of Nicholas Knapp who was an original settler in Greenwich.  Elizabeth Butler was the daughter of Walter Butler, one of the original settlers of Greenwich.
