The Turner Family of Caroline County, Maryland

The Turner Family

1st Generation Henry Turner immigrated to the Colony of Maryland in 1671 and settled in Dorchester County. He married Abigail Williams prior to 31 August 1674. Abigail was the daughter of Edward Williams, Sr. and his wife Abigail, who had been transported to Maryland in 1665 with their children, Abigail, Dorothy, George, and Thomas. Edward Williams, Sr. died soon after their arrival and his widow, Abigail, married Arthur Wright. Mrs. Abigail Williams Wright was married a third time to Richard Davis of Dorchester County, Maryland. Henry Turner died intestate in Dorchester County, MD sometime between the 3rd of September and the 31st of October 1679. His widow, Abigail (Williams) Turner then married Richard Adams and John Rix/Ricks/Rakes in turn. Henry & Abigail (Williams) Turner had one son;

1. Thomas Turner (d. 1709)

2nd Generation Thomas Turner (Henry), was married twice. His first wife was named Elizabeth whom he had married before March 1704 and his second was named Mary, the maiden name for either wife is unknown, but there is speculation that Elizabeth was the daughter of William Spencer, Sr. and Isabell, his wife. Elizabeth (Spencer?) Turner died sometime before 6 November 1706 when a record bearing that date was recorded in the Dorchester County, MD land records in which "Thomas Turner of Dorchester County, Planter, in compliance with a dying request of Eliz: Turner, dec'd wife of said Thomas, gave to his son Henry Turner, one negro woman named Hannah and all her increase." (Dor. Co., MD Land Records 6 old 91) Thomas was the father of three children, Henry, who was by Elizabeth and the youngest, Thomas, was by Mary, who was pregnant when Thomas Turner wrote his will in 1709. The middle child was a daughter named Sarah, but which of Thomas's wives was Sarah's mother has not been determined. Thomas was the father of;

1. Henry Turner (d. 1746)
2. Sarah Turner (d. ca 1776) married 1st William Fountain and 2nd Capt. Zebdial Potter
3. Thomas Turner

3rd Generation Henry Turner (Thomas, Henry) was married before 9 January 1721/22 to Elizabeth Bonner, the daughter of Theodorus Bonner, Gent., and his wife Rachel, of Talbot County, Maryland. In 1717 Theodorus Bonner willed his daughter Elizabeth a tract of land called "Betty's Lott" at the head of the Little Choptank River in Dorchester County. (Maryland Wills Lib. 16 fol. 365) Henry Turner and Elizabeth his wife sold "Betty's Lott" to John Stevens in 1731. (Dorchester County, MD Land Records 8 old 418) Henry and Elizabeth (Bonner) Turner are known to have had one son;

1. Henry Turner (d. 1797)

4th Generation Henry Turner (Henry, Thomas, Henry) was married to a lady named Sarah whose maiden name is unknown. Henry and Sarah were the parents of five children;

1. Thomas Turner (bef 1760-1805) married Ann "Nancy" Andrew
2. Henry Turner, Jr. (d. 1792) married 1st Sarah Blades 2nd Rebecca (White) Eaton
