Ragan Family
North Carolina to Tennessee

Sarah 'Lillian' Smith Leith's mother was Ellen 'Elizabeth' Ragan before she married Theodore Alexander Smith on 1 October 1856 in Hardeman County, Tennessee. The people depicted here are the ancestors of Sarah 'Lillian' Smith on her mother's side. Lillian Smith Leith's grandfather was William B. Ragan. Her great grandfather was Jesse Ragan and her great-great grandfather was a man named Nathan Ragan. That takes us back in time to 1755 when Nathan was born. Although it is not known exactly where in North Carolina that Nathan Ragan was born, it is known that he and his family were in Person County, North Carolina in 1773, the likely place of his birth. By the 1820's the family of Nathan Ragan had migrated to Dickson County, Tennessee. Nathan would die in Dickson County in 1835. By 1840 Nathan's grandson, William B. Ragan had removed to Hardeman County, Tennessee where he died in 1849. Nathan's great granddaughter, Elizabeth Ragan relocated to Henderson County, Tennessee shortly after marrying Dr. Theodore A. Smith in 1856 in Hardeman County where she was born.

Theodore and Lillian Smith helped to found the town of Henderson in Henderson County in 1858 and both lived out their lives in Henderson, Chester County, Tennessee. In 1879 a portion of Henderson County, was split off to form the new county of Chester. The town of Henderson, no longer located in Henderson County, became the county seat for Chester County. You can read more about Dr. Theodore A. Smith and and his family in Henderson, Chester County, Tennessee under the surname, Smith (Click on "Smith" on the main page).
