[The wild Rose seen above is the State Flower of New York State.]

This website is designed to aid people who want to do accurate genealogical research.  The geographical focus is Albany, NY and surrounding counties (Albany, Columbia, Rensselaer, Greene, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Montgomery, and a small amount of Herkimer.  Also there is a bit of Berkshire Co., MA, the western parts of which were considered to be in NY at one time.).  If a link has information for more than one county represented on this site, I usually have placed it in the category of New York State.  You should not ignore that category.  I use current borders when determining whether records are for a certain  county.

SEARCH ENGINES are provided by some NYGenWeb or RootsWeb sites.  Some of them are listed on the Genealogical Aids webpage.  Before looking through 30 cemeteries on a county website, check to see if the site has a search engine.  Be aware, however, that search engines only search through records physically on a website, and they can be very unreliable at doing that.  Read my webpage "Understanding Website Search Engines".  Even though twenty sets of baptism records may be listed on a site, some of them could be links to records on other websites.   The offsite records will not be found by the search engine on the website you are using.

Following the links on my website, the transcriber of the records, the author of an article, the site owner, or the site sponsor is listed in parentheses.  I prefer to cite the person who transcribed or computerized the records if I can tell who it is.

To report problems on the website, click here.  Please do not write for genealogical advice.  No more than half of the people who have written in the past took the time to thank me for my help.  I suggest that you subscribe to a mailing list and ask your questions there (see "NY County Websites & Mailing Lists").  For a reasonable fee, I will put together a plan of how you can go about searching for your ancestor(s) in New York State.  Instructions can include both online and local area resources.  Some things can only be done locally; for that I can recommend local researchers.

The links on this website bypass the home page of most sites.  Otherwise, you would have to spend too much time looking for the records that the link will take you to directly.  If the webpage that you are visiting has an option such as Home, you should take time to explore that site for valuable additional information.  A map image with the names of property owners shown on it will not be reported by a search engine.  Take the time to look around each site for valuable information to which I did not provide links.

Links on the "Records" and "Genealogical Aids & Local History" webpages are organized by Subject.  Within each subject, the largest geographical area is listed first.  The counties are shown alphabetically within a subject.

If a smiley face    precedes a link, the material was posted by me and is on this website.  will be used to indicate each link that is added, and the graphic will be removed after about a month.   will be used to indicate a revised version of a webpage posted on this or another website.  For new and updated items, a date at the end of the entry will show just how recently it was added to this website, or when it was updated last.  The date will be removed after a month.

Your Cache's Memory can Interfere with Your Seeing an Updated Webpage

If you visit this website and then return to it within a short time span, your computer may remember the screen that it last saw.  This image may be stored in the cache so that it doesn't have to slowly downloaded from the internet again.  If I have added new links before your revisit, it is possible that you won't see them due to this cache time saver.  If you wonder about this, you can check the date of last update (near the top of this page), then click on REFRESH (Internet Explorer) or RELOAD (Netscape).  If a new date of update appears there, then you will know that more information has been added since your last visit.

Please be aware that transcription and typing errors are not uncommon.  Whenever possible, you should check important data in non-internet sources.

3)    SEARCH ENGINE

Search engines give you quick results, but in reality they miss more than they find.  Increase your odds greatly by understanding search engines and how to improve the effectiveness of your searches.  Read my webpage, "Understanding Website Search Engines".

This search engine also searches the baptism and marriage records of the Albany Reformed Church which are on another website.  This is done with the website owner's permission.

Besides this genealogy website, I now have my own domain and two other websites.

1)  If you are interested in Science, check out my Grandpa Cliff's Science Website for Teenagers.  Although written for teenagers, it is also suitable for adults.  Begun in Oct 2005 for my grandchildren who were studying trees with me, most webpages give detailed, easy-to-understand explanations of Science subjects using photos.  More subjects will be added as time permits.

2)  Skip Parsons' Riverboat Jazz Band - playing dixieland and traditional jazz in the Albany, NY area.
