Don Kennedy Clover
obituary
published in the Houston
(Texas) Chronicle on 7/4/2004.
DON KENNEDY CLOVER, husband for over 58 years to Dorothy Jean, proud
father to 6 children, whose spouses all lovingly called him 'Dad', and
proud grandfather and great grandfather, passed away on July 1, 2004,
in Sachse, Texas, outside of Dallas. Born on May 20, 1923 in Cresent,
Missouri, Mr. Clover grew up in and around the South East Missouri area
until joining the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1940 at age 17.
Joining the US Army in February, 1942, he volunteered for the
paratroopers, soon seeing extensive combat during WWII in the
Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe, and Normandy battles and
campaigns. During 3 1/2 years of combat action with the 17th Airborne
Division and the famed 82nd Airborne Division (507th PIR), he
participated in several combat parachute jumps including D-Day in
Normandy, France, Holland, (Operation Market Garden), and Germany
(Rhineland jump), and endured the long winter siege at Battle of the
Bulge. While serving with these units he earned several combat
decorations including 4 awards of the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat
Infantry Badge (2nd award), and 3 combat jump stars with spearhead
affixed to his silver Airborne jump wings. After his Honorable
Discharge from the US Army in 1944, Mr. Clover returned home and on
October 15, 1945, married Dorothy Jean LaPlant in DeSoto, Missouri.
Over the course of the next two decades they raised a family of 6
children. While working for the Monsanto Chemical Company in St. Louis,
Missouri, he earned an Associate in Science Degree in Engineering. He
retired from Monsanto Chemical Co. in 1979 and moved to Florida with
Dorothy to live out his Golden Years. Deciding that he was too young
for the Golden Years retirement, he moved to Houston, Texas in 1982,
and, with a partner, started Builders' Alarm Company, a security
monitoring and alarm business. In 1990, Mr. Clover returned to Florida
to again enjoy the sunshine. The couple later returned to Texas. In
1962, Mr. Clover became a degreed member of the Masons, and in July
1987, after having earned his 32nd degree as a Mason, was sworn in as a
member of the Shriners' organization in Houston, Texas. Don Kennedy
Clover is survived by his wife Dorothy Jean; son Bill Schnorbus and
wife Cecelia (Florida); son Don Jr. and wife Amy (Houston, Tx);
