The
Mielke family is my genealogical "block wall". Every researcher seems
to have one, don't they?
I've
been looking for the relatives of Johann Paul Mielke for 20 years with
no success. Johann Paul Mielke, born 1854 and his wife, Susanna H.
Roggenbuck, born 1847, (and their 4 children) left Germany from the Port
of Hamburg aboard the vessel AMERICA, landing at the Port of Baltimore
on February 25, 1892. When Johann applied for U.S. citizenship, he
listed his last German residence as the town of Floetenstein.
His son, Franz (known as Frank) b.1885 listed his birthplace as Floetenstein,
Germany in his application to become a U.S. citizen. I don't have
any proof that Johann Paul Mielke was born in Floetenstein, although I
feel fairly certain he was probably born in a township nearby. There
are only 10 non-consecutive years worth of Floetenstein birth/marriage/death
records available on microfilm at this time. I've written to the
church in Floetenstein, and they assure me that their records were all
destroyed in the process of war, however, I've had correspondance with
people who have visited Floetenstein and they assure me that more records
DO exist, it's just a matter of getting the Polish government to release
them. Hopefully, in years to come, more records will be filmed and we will
be able to learn more about these Mielke's. I feel fairly certain
that Johann's wife Susanna H. Roggenbuck was born in Floetenstein because
her parents are listed in her sisters birth records for Floetenstein.
Today,
Floetenstein is no longer in Germany. Today, it is called Koczala
(Miastko) Koszalin, Poland and is located at latitude 53.9000 and longitude
17.0667 It
is 199 miles NW of Warsaw, Poland.
