John Boyd married Margaret LONG, in Suffolk County, Boston, Mass. on 11 April 1731, daughter of John and Sarah Long of Taunton, Mass.  In "Genealogical Data Extracted from the Boston Selectmen's Minutes 1736-1775" by Brigitte Burket there is a "Warning Out"  record  "John Boyd and his wife are lately come to Rumney Marsh and are at the home of John White; they are "warned to depart" the town within 14 days." The next record I find of John and Margaret Boyd is in Upton/Hopkinton, MA where some of their children's births or baptisms are recorded.  John and Margaret Boyd moved from Taunton, Massachusetts to Hopkinton/Upton in Worcestor County, and finally to Shelburne Falls where they lived out their lives.  I believe John Boyd was a part of the 1718 migrations from Ulster, Ireland but I have found no paper proof or connection except in the book by Cutter. John died 30 June 1789 and (2) Margaret died 30 September 1793 aged 86. Their children (3). (not neccessarily in this order) were:

1. John Boyd Jr. b. 1733 d. 15 Oct 1815 m. 1st Persis Goodenow m. 2nd Mary WARREN  b. 1737 d. 19 Aug 1825 . (John Jr. purchased land in Wilmington, Vt. in 1793 and 1795)

2. David Boyd b. 1735?  d. 1802 Wilmington, VT.  m. Sibbel TAYLOR 6 Dec 1770  bp. 25 July 1743  d. 1807

3. Abraham Boyd (4).  b. 1740? d. 1820? m. Hannah HILL 24 June 1766  see chapter 3

4. Samuel Boyd bapt. 3 May 1747 Hopkinton m. Sarah AMSDEN 10 Feb 1773 in Conway, MA.
Samuel was a Minute Man during the American Revolution.  According to "Massachusetts Revolutionary Soldiers" page 236,

"Samuel Boyd was a sergeant in Capt.  Hugh McClemmen's company, Col Samuel William's regiment, which marched 20 April 1775 in response to the alarm of April 19, 1775, from Colrain and Shelburne."

Samuel took part in Shay's rebellion in 1786/87. See more below.  Amsden Web Page

5. William Boyd  baptised 11 June 1749 Hopkinton, Worcestor Co., MA died 25 May 1840 in West Springfield, MA. [Gravestone 3rd Congregational Church, Ireland Parish, later named the 1st Congregational Church of Holyoke]  He married in January of 1777 Margery TAYLOR born 7 March 1758 Newington, CT and died 17 Oct 1833* West Springfield, MA. William served in Revolution as a corporal in Capt. Isaac Tuckerman's Company, Col. Ebenezer Francis' Massachusetts Regiment. See Dar Records

Thomas Parsons Boyd,
son of Thomas Boyd and Susannah SMITH, was born at Shelburne,  18 August 1809.  He married at E. Bloomfield, NY, 22 May 1833 Anna STEELE, daughter of  Elisha STEELE.

At the age of 19 he went with his father, Thomas Boyd to New York and settled in the town of York, near the village of Griegsville. In 1841 he removed to LeRoy, where he lived nine years and then returned to York. At an early age he united with the Congregational Church in Shelburne, MA and ever maintained a
consistent and devoted Christian life.  He was from the first an earnest Abolitionist and in temperance he was an advocate of total abstinence. In temperment he was patient, hopeful, and perservering. His last day of work was characteristic of his life; it was spent in planting trees and vines for the coming generations. [Taken from his obituary] He was a farmer and a teacher.

Copy of a letter to Edward S. Boyd            February 18, 1945
Author unknown but it was considered to be George W. Boyd

Your Grandfather, Thomas Parsons Boyd, was born August 18th, 1809. He was the son of Thomas Boyd and Susannah Smith. The Boyds for two generations before Thomas were farmers and lived up on old Shelburne Hill, Massachusetts. Thomas was named for his father and Beulah Parsons.

Thomas Boyd with his children including Thomas Parsons, when Thomas Parsons was 14 years old, removed from Shelburne to York, New York having married Miriam Allis after the death of Susannah. They are buried in the Griegsville Cemetery. I am of the opinion that Griegsville is but a post office and village in the township of York, but am not sure.

About 10 years after going to NY State grandfather married Anna Steele who was in East Bloomfield, New York a little east of Griegsville. She was the daughter of Sergt. Elisha Steele of Bethlehem, CT. Thomas Parsons was quite lame after I began to know him. Sometimes he used a cane.

He went south to Florida, bought land there and planted it with oranges. About the time they got to bearing a heavy freeze wiped the orchard out and he gave up although I think he spent several winters in Florida.

There was a chapel at Griegsville or near there where grandpa was very much interested and I should say he was interested in the church. I think Grace De La Vergne could tell you more about that. Her address is: Mrs. M. De La Vergne, 46 Wyndham Rd., Rochester 12, NY.

A part of his Florida experience was to bring up some Osage Orange slips or young trees which he planted on each side of the lane from the Griegsville Highway to the house and through the farm as division fences, where there were no stone walls, and believe me they made a real fence.

Neither horses, nor cattle or pigs tried to go through them and Will had many scars when he tried it.  No short cuts by trying to get over the fence. The hedges grew so tall that when riding on loads of hay or wheat we could just see over the tops of them. He told me I could remember the size of his farm by the number of days in the year - 365 1/4 acres, but never could explain to me where the 1/4 acre came from.

He was a well read man and full of humor. I remember once when a very small fellow he had me worried. He had been digging potatoes in the garden back of the house and my job was to fill the basket, a bushel, and carry it into the kitchen. He had me pile on more potatoes and cautioned me not to let them fall off and he didn't see how I was to do it. Another time he asked our father if we were disturbed by his music during the night. He had heard some fellows rustling among the grape vines on the wide verandah back of the house and he took his melodian and carried it out on the verandah and entertained them for several hours with gospel hymns. It was a bright moonlight night and they could be seen when outside the arbor, being hidden when inside the arbor. Towards dawn he shut up his melodian and told them they could go home but he would rather if they needed grapes to have them come and ask for them and he would give them all they wanted".   Children of Edward and Helen:

                                  SAMUEL GREGORY BOYD

                                                      Reaches 90 years

The Post-Star, Friday, June 16, 1933, Glen Falls, New York

Samuel G. Boyd is one of the few residents of Glen Falls alive today who can picture Glen Street as it looked before the great fire of 1864.

Born on Federal Hill, North Bolton, June 15, 1843, Mr. Boyd came here with his parents in 1847. Mr. Boyd worshipped in all five churches built by the Presbyterians, including the "Old white", erected about 125 years ago and replaced in 1850 by a building which burned in 1864.  Mr Boyd has a vivid recollection of the fire which destroyed all but two stores. He was twenty-one and a member of the fire department. He did his bit manning the brakes on a hand engine from which water was pumped from wells. There were no motor pumpers or high pressure water mains inn those days.

Mr. Boyd's home at Park and Elm streets was a station on the "Underground Railway" for slaves escaping to Canada. Going to the barn one morning, he saw a negro hidden in the hay. Rushing into the house he told his mother what he had seen and was set in a chair with the admonition not to say a word about it. That evening his father drove out with a sleigh loaded with bogs. In the load were two slaves. They were de-
livered to a Quaker in Swanton, Vermont, who assisted them on the last lap of their journey to Canada.

Few residents of this city are as well known as this tall, active nonagenarian, who can remember when Glen Falls was a hamlet of 400 persons and the industries here were sawmills, lime kilns, tanneries, and brick yards.

The fifteenth annual reunion of the Goodman family, conducted Wednesday at the Wray farm, Fort Ann, was in honor of Samuel G. Boyd, the oldest member of the family. The reunion was called "Cousin Sam Boyd's Picnic Day"

Samuel G. Boyd's parents were Rufus Boyd and Eliza Catlin GOODMAN. She was the daughter of Eleazar GOODMAN and Elizabeth CATLIN. He had brothers, Harlan Page Boyd, Rufus Boyd, and two sisters; Elizabeth Catlin Boyd and Helen Goodman Boyd. Samuel married Katherine M.TenEYCK of
Saugerties, New York October 15, 1866. Their children were: Harlan Page Boyd, Rufus TenBroeck Boyd, Mollie Elizabeth Boyd, Frances TenEcyk Boyd and Bessie Eliza Boyd.

James Boyd,1 son of David Boyd and Sibbel Taylor, m. 2nd Betsy Hastings, 6 Jan 1805. They had three children born in Wilmington, Vermont.  [Vitals: Wilmington, Vt., Marriages, M. Green.]

1. There is an article in the NEGHS Register (Vol. 21, p. 851, Oct 1867) about a HASTINGS family, whose daughter Betsy, born 3 February 1789, in Hardwick, Worcester, MA,  married James BOYD in Wilmington, VT.  It said they moved to Illinois, where she died 26 January 1858, aged 74.

3. Ann Eliza b. 30 Oct 1823.

Heman Boyd(1), son of James Boyd and Betsy Hastings was born in Wilmington, Vermont, on 16 Dec 1806. He died in Manhattan Kings County, New York in 1870. "Heman Boyd would have been three years old when the 1810 census was taken. In that year Wilmington had four families with a male child under 10.
These were Luther, David, James, and Stephan. Of these only James remains in Wilmington for the 1820 and 1830 census.  Since he and his mother inherited his father's farm, it is not too surprising that he would remain in town. All of Stephan's children were entered in the Congregational Church records after he was killed by a falling tree in 1814.  None is named Heman. Luther is another of Abraham's sons. Neither David nor Luther are very good candidates for Hemans's father in that neither appear in the 1820 or 1830 Wilmington (or Vermont) census but Heman is definitely still in Wilmington in the early 1830's. So James is the best choice (as father of Heman). We know little about him. There is no probate or death record and no gravestone in Wilmington".

Heman married(2) Julia Atherton FOX, daughter of Amos Fox and Philanda McCOY, 13 Oct 1831 in Wilmington. She was born 28 March 1810 in Wilmington. She died on 25th Oct 1861 in New York.
