Allen Cullumber, son of John Cullumber

Allen Cullumber, son of John Cullumber and Martha "Patsy" Forguson, was born ca. 1815, Ohio, died 21 June 1880, age 65, Prescott, Yavapai, Arizona.(1) Allen married (first) 15 January 1835, in Franklin County, Ohio, Nancy Lilly. They were married by Wm. Walker, Justice of the Peace. Her name was spelled Lilly in the marriage record. (3) Nancy Lilly was born 5 November 1812,(3) died ca. 1842, in Texas. She was the daughter of Armiger Lilley and Rebecca Hutchison. Allen married (second) ca. 1845, in Texas, Hanna W. (Matthews) Carter.  No record of the marriage was found in Red River County where the civil records do not start until 1845. The early Titus County, Texas records were also destroyed. They were divorced ca. 1856, Ventura County, California, in his favor.  Hannah was born ca. 1811, Alabama, died 16 November 1863, San Juan Bautist, Monterey, California.
Allen married (third) 16 December 1867, in San Bernardino, California, Luraney G. Burnett.(4) [other info no source, Mrs. Luranay Burnett Connor.]  They were divorced 1872, Yavapai County, Arizona in her favor.  Allen married (fourth) 7 December 1876, in Yavapai County, Arizona, Mary B. Ray.  Both were residents of Yavapai County. The marriage was performed by J. A. Merril, Minister of the Gospel. The witnesses were Alfred Allen and Mrs. A. M. Allen.(5) Mary was born ca. November 1837, Ohio, died 1 November 1909, Prescott, Arizona. She was the daughter of Nesbit Ray and Mary Arthur, both born Pennsylvania.(6)   All unfootnoted info about Allen Cullember, wife and children is from Faye Cullember, or Gerald Zimmer. No sources were included.  San Juan Bautista is now in San Benito County.  Information sent by Karen Anderson:  her death certificate. Mary B. Cullumber, Nov. 1, 1909 died in Prescott and buried at Masonic Cemetery. Informant was Jessie Smith of Globe AZ.
Hannah was married previously to a Carter ca. 1833. She had a son named James Evans Carter, born ca. 1834. She married (third) between 1856 and 1858, Mr. Campbell.

Information sent by Gerald Zimmer:  Allen Cullumber did a lot of moving; from Ohio he went to Texas where he got a 3rd class certificate for land too late, immigrants of 320 acres in Red River County.  He was on the survey crew which surveyed this land.  His 2nd wife was a well educated woman from the South.  Her brother was Gov of Mississippi.  Allen left her while crossing the plains, taking all her money leaving her with the 2 smallest children. [But note that another source says they were divorced in Ventura County, California so presumably she went with him.] Allen was the first farmer in Ventura County, California in 1847.  He returned to TX in 1849. In 1859 he went to the Gadsden Purchase, newly acquired in AZ with his sons.

Some of the above information does not seem to mesh.  It was given to me without sources.  If anyone has any real records of any of the above after he left Ohio, I would like to know.

From 1859 Newspaper "Friendly Christian":  Apaches raid on the Cullumber ranch-- the Indians stole clothing, blankets & provisions, also killed an ox. Allen wasn't home but his two sons were and they escaped to a nearby ranch.  In 1862 Allen brought his children back to CA.  Gold was discovered near his ranch so in 1863 he went back home.  He served as Justice of the Peace at Walnut Grove, AZ.  Sons bought ranches in AZ.  One was killed by Apaches later on.  One ranch was used as a stage station.

Allen was living in Yavapai County, Arizona in 1876 according to the voting register which gives the information that he was aged 61, born Ohio.(7)

1880 Obituary: Death of Allen Cullumber. At 7:30 last evening on June 21st, Hon. Allen Cullumber, an old and respected citizen of Walnut Grove, in this county, quietly passed from this to another shore, after having lived a long eventful life on earth.  Mr. Cullumber was at the time of his death, which was caused from a general wearing out of the system, 65 years of age, having been born in the State of Ohio in 1815. At the breaking of the gold fever in California, Mr. C. was one of the first to emigrate to the land of gold. He settled near San Buenaventura [in Ventura County] where he resided with his family for several years and just twenty two years ago emigrated to Pima County, Arizona.  Early in 1863, he removed to this county, settled at Walnut Grove where he continued to reside until a few days since, when he was brought to Prescott for medical aid.  But he had already passed beyond the help of human hands and the messenger of death was beckoning him home.
Allen Cullumber was, during life, a man of indomitable will and great physical perseverance. For thirty years, he was one of the hardy pioneers, who acted as a vanguard to mark the trails through the West for those who might see fit to follow, and was until a few years since, noted to be a brave sentinel to guard against surprise from the common enemy and but [few] better rifle shots could be found in the West.
Mr. C. has been married three times.  He leaves a wife in Prescott, two daughters in Oregon and two sons in California to mourn his loss. He served this county in the territorial Legislature, was a Democrat in politics and belonged to the free Masons, having joined the order when he was a young man.
Mr. Cullumber has passed from us and the Territory has lost one of her oldest and most resolute citizens. Peace to his ashes.

Obituary: Mrs. Mary B. Cullumber succumbs to Illness after Making Brave Battle for Life.  Mrs. Mary Cullumber who two score years ago was President Taft’s teacher in one of the Cincinnati public schools, died shortly before midnight lat night at Mercy Hospital where she has been for several weeks. Death was due to a complication of diseases.  Mrs. Cullumber had been in failing health for some time and she was unable to see the president when he paid a visit to Prescott and the chief executive, owing to a lack of time, was unable to pay a visit to he hospital, although he expressed an earnest desire to do so.  Mrs. Cullumber’s illness assumed a critical stage several days ago and her niece, Mrs. C. W. Shute was summoned to her bedside. She was with her when the end came.  A resident of Prescott since 1875, Mrs. Cullumber was one of the pioneer residents of northern Arizona.  She taught for eleven years in the public schools in this city and had previously taught for twenty-four years in Ohio.  She was wedded to Allen Cullumber, a prominent resident of this county and following her marriage gave up her vocation as a teacher.....(9)

Lilley Bible

Allen, Nancy and Thomas Cullumber, the three oldest children of John Cullumber, married children of Armiger Lilley and Rebecca Hutchinson in Madison County, Ohio.
Armiger Lilley was the son of William Lilley and Elizabeth Paulette. William was the son of Edmund and Ann Lilley. Armiger Lilley was born in Fluvanna County, Virginia. He appears to have used the spelling Lilley and Lilly.  However, in the 1700s in Fluvanna County, there are a lot of records spelled variously, especially Lilley.
Please note that Gustav Anjou, who was perhaps the most famous fraudulent genealogists in the United States, wrote a fraudulent book on the Lilley family carrying the family back to France and then to Sweden.  This is all fraudulent.  I have been to the archives where the information would have been kept.  It is not there. I believe the Lilley family was from England and the Paulette family were French, They were in the James River settlement in the 1600s.
Someone from Ohio visited Blanche Cullember, granddaughter of Thomas Cullumber and left a typewritten copy of an Armiger  bible.  Unfortunately, Blanche was not interested in genealogy and just threw letters and papers into a box under the bed. Later on Faye Cullumber took these papers.  They mostly had no dates or information as to who sent the paper. The Armiger Lilley Bible listed all of his children and their dates of birth.  It appears to have been from an Oklahoma DAR collection because the statement was made that the bible was the property of Mrs C E Chamberlin, Pawhuska, Oklahoma.  However, she has been contacted and has no Lilley connections but she was the Registrar of the Oklahoma DAR for several years.
I have theorized the bible was inherited by the Orohood Family.  One of the Lilley children married an Orohood in Ohio.  There are some additional Orohood records in the bible.
If you have any knowledge of the whereabouts of this bible, please contact me.  More on Armiger Lilly Bible
