John Cullumber junior
Cullember-Cullumber
Colember-Culumber
John Cullumber
son of John Cullumber
John Cullumber, son of John
Cullumber and Martha Forguson, was born ca. 1828, as he died 13
September 1893, aged 65 years. He is buried beside his wife,
Drusilla, in Upper Mound Cemetery, McDonough County, Illinois.(1)
John married 8 March 1849, in Madison County, Ohio, by George J.
Archer, Drusilla Anderson.(2) Drusilla was born ca. 3 July 1831, as she
died 6 April 1890, aged 58 years 9 months 3 days. Her tombstone reads:
Wife of John.(3)
The Will of John
Cullumber: Dated 25 April 1893, John Cullumber of New Philadelphia,
McDonough County, Illinois, devised the following: to his daughter Mary
L. Lemaster, $1000 less 1/3 of the expenses of the estate; to his two
daughters, Margaret N. Cullumber and Sciota Cullumber, equal shares of
the residue. Margaret was appointed executrix. The will was
proven in probate court session, October 1893. The witnesses
stated that John died 13 September 1893.(4) The will proves that Mary
Louise Cullumber, Margaret Nancy Cullumber, and Sciota Cullumber were
his daughters.
Although Francis
Elizabeth “Lizzie” Cullumber was the daughter of John and
Drusilla, she is not mentioned in the will. This would be natural if
she had previously died without children, which appears to have been
the case. Elizabeth Cullumber married 26 September 1877, Fulton County,
Illinois, James F. Lamaster, aged 28, of McDonough County,
Illinois.(5) She appeared with him in the 1880 census, where her
first name is given as Lizzie.(6) Unfortunately, she died shortly after
that. There is a tombstone in the Upper Mound Township Cemetery which
reads, Elizabeth LeMaster, wife of J. F., died 28 October 1881, aged 24
years, 6 months, 26 days.(7) James F. LeMaster, her widowed spouse,
lived with Elizabeth’s family after her death. He was a
widowed man living with John Cullumber in 1890,(8) and with William and
Sciota (Cullumber) Hammer in California in 1900,(9) and Sciota
(Cullumber) Hammer, in California in 1910.(10) In the 1900 and 1910
censuses, Margaret Cullumber was listed as the sister of Sciota, and
James LeMaster was listed as a brother-in-law. The statement that James
was a widowed brother-in-law strongly implies that his deceased wife,
Elizabeth Cullumber, was the sister of Sciota and Margaret.
24 March
1892, Macomb (Illinois) Journal , in “New Philadelphia
news”: Dr. J.B. LaMatty had a run away horse last Saturday night.
In the dark it ran into a wagon parked in front of Mr. Columber's
house. The horse became frightened and threw the doctor out and ran
home.(11)
The McDonough
County Genealogical Society published the school tax lists from
1859. John Cullumber was a director in Mound Township, the tax
payers beside him were Morgan Modesitt, James LeMaster, and (G or D.)
LeMaster.(12)

2. Margaret Ann “Nancy” Cullumber was
born 11 July 1851, in Ohio, and died 12 February 1927, in Los Angeles,
California, buried in Rosedale Cemetery. According to the informant,
Mrs. Chas. Anderson, Margaret was the daughter of John Cullumber, born
Ohio, and Lucile [sic] Anderson, born Ohio. She was not
married.(12) Her name appears as Margaret, Nancy, Margaret A. and
Margaret N. in various censuses. She was living with her sister,
Sciota, in the 1900 and the 1910 U.S. censuses.

as Executrix of estate. She owns the dwelling she is living in. Two

3. Francis Elizabeth “Lizzie” Cullumber,
born in Ohio, ca. 1 April 1857, as she died 28 October 1881, aged 24
years, 6 months, 28 days, in New Philadelphia, Illinois.(13) She
was buried in Upper Mound Township. The tombstone has her name as
Elizabeth LeMaster and reads: wife of J. F. Her age on the tombstone at
her death was 24 years, 6 months and 26 days, so her birth date could
have been 3 April 1857.(14)
James F. LeMaster married (first) 9 September 1870
McDonough County, Illinois, Jane A. Sheets.(15) Jane A. Sheets
was born ca. 8 September 1847, as she died 17 March 1874, aged 25 years
6 months 9 days, buried Upper Mound Township.(16) James F.
LeMaster, aged 28, of McDonough County, Illinois, married (second) 26
September 1877, Fulton County, Illinois, Elizabeth Cullumber.
They were married by B. F. Tallman, Minister in the M. E. Church.(17)
The boy, Ellis, aged 9, with them in the 1880 census,(18) was born
while James was married to Jane. James F. LeMaster,
Lizzie’s widowed spouse, lived with the Cullumber family after
her death. He was a widowed man living with John Cullumber in
1890,(19) and with William and Sciota (Cullumber) Hammer in California
in 1900,(20) and with Sciota (Cullumber) Hammer, in California in
1910.(21)
In the 1900 and 1910 censuses, Margaret Cullumber
was listed as the sister of Sciota, and James LeMaster was listed as a
brother-in-law. He was not in the 1920 census with Margaret, so
he may have died between 1910 and 1920. There are two James LeMaster
entries in the California Death index. James LeMaster age 63,
died 30 January 1913, no. 1895, county no. 70. James LeMaster
died age 67, co. 70, 22 July 1913, no. (22193, not clear in the online
index.). The first one has the right age but is not the right
one. See record.
Elizabeth died
so young that she did not leave a lot of references. But her name
is Elizabeth on her marriage record and her tombstone. In the
1860 census, she appears to be the child named Frances, aged 4, in her
father’s household.(22) In the 1870 census, she appears to be the
person named Lizzie in her father’s household.(23) Consequently,
her name was probably Elizabeth Francis Cullumber, but her nickname was
Lizzie. Her niece, the daughter of her sister, Mary Louisa, was
named Lizzie Francis Le Master. This sounds as if Lizzie Frances Le
Master was named after her mother’s sister because she had
died. However, her exact name as Elizabeth Francis Cullumber does
not appear anywhere.
In the back of
the cemetery book, there is a set of information with no sources. It
contains numerous errors. The article purports to be about the person
who married Jane Sheets and Elizabeth Cullumber, but his name was given
as Joseph F. LeMaster, not James F. LeMaster. However, much of the
information it gives appears to refer to James. It says that he
had two children by his marriage to Jane, Ellis and John Everett, but
had no children with Elizabeth. He was born in Sangomon County,
Illinois, the son of Joseph and Sarah (Yocum) LeMaster, the family
moving to [McDonough] County in 1863. He farmed until his
father’s death in 1876 and then he took over the father’s
store.(24) In the 1890 Census with the Cullumber family, James is a
merchant with a grocery store in New Philadelphia. However, the rest of
the information is not substantiated. The items in this article
are so scrambled that the article should be used only as a suggestion
for further research.

4. Sciota Cullumber, born 24 July 1861, Illinois,
died 26 March 1915, Los Angeles, California. The informant was her
sister, Margaret Cullumber, who stated that Sciota was the daughter of
John Cullumber and Drusilla Anderson, both born Ohio. Sciota died at
947 Winfield, which was her home. She was a widow. She was buried in
Rosedale Cemetery.(25) Sciota married 26 October 1896, Los Angeles
County, California, William George Hammer.(26) William A. G. Hammer was
born 27 September 1860, in Germany, and died 30 January 1906, in Los
Angeles, California, buried Rosedale Cemetery. The informant, Mrs.
Sciota Hammer, stated that she was his widow. He was a merchant. His
parents were H. W. Hammer, and Emma Pokle, both born Germany. The
doctor gave the cause of death as a fatty degeneration of the heart
complicated by erysipelas of scalp and face.(27) Erysipelas was a
common disease a the turn of the century. It is a type of strep
infection affecting the skin. It was one of many illnesses that were
often fatal before the discovery of antibiotics.
