Geologists report that the features of the area resulted from the steady, grinding action of at least two Ice Age glaciers. These ice masses with intense pressure formed the long narrow lakes and deep gorges with their rushing waterfalls and the wide, fertile valleys. The Finger Lakes region is a unique area found nowhere else in the world.
The Finger Lakes area in all seasons is a wonder to behold. In Spring the rain and melting snow fill the narrow glens and deep ravines and lures fishermen to its swollen streams. Under the warm Summer sun, you will find the natives and visitors refreshing themselves in the shimmering lakes -- others enjoying sailing and boating. On shore, the numerous forests and hiking trails attract recreation lovers. Fall is indescribable as nature puts on its spectacular display of color around the vineyards, forests and fields. Even Winter has its own beauty when the hills are covered with white snow. The hardiest enjoy the ice-fishing, skiing and hiking with the cold wind blowing across the lakes.
The search for land and new adventures brought hardy settlers to the Finger Lakes after the Revolutionary War. They pushed back the forests and cultivated the fields and planted orchards and vineyards. The farms, hamlets, villages and cities grew and prospered but much of the wilderness remains and is the beauty of the Finger Lakes today.
