"LETTER FROM OWENS CROSS ROADS"

Owens Cross Roads, Alabama

Editors Mercury:

The Masonic burial of Mr. James Latham took place yesterday, May 16th, at the graveyard near Union Church. The Masons organized at the church and marched to the graveyard, a distance of nearly half a mile. After they had gone through with all the ceremonies, and filled up the grave, which was all done in a very solemn and impressive manner, they again marched back to the church where we had an able sermon by the Rev. R. T. Winston. There was a large crowd present to witness the affair. We had an interesting debate last Saturday night, the subject was "resolve that there is more pleasure in possession than there is in pursuit"

After an earnest discussion on both sides the judges, Misses Helen Tabor, Katie Burton and Vinnie Brannum, decided in favor of the affirmative. The people of Owens X Roads have secured the services of Miss Katie Burton to teach them a ten-month school. They are all highly pleased with her and her methods of teaching.

The highly famed correspondent of the MERCURY, "Farmers Daughter" is in our little village, visiting friends and relatives. We were honored by her presence in our office this afternoon, hope she will call again.

Mr. A. Whited, candidate for the Legislature is circulating amongst his friends here today.

Some gentlemen from your city have pitched their tent on the bank of the river, near the mill, for the purpose of fishing this week.

I remain as ever your,

Good Wishes.
