Generation IV - 3 Fisher- Hutchins

Great-Grandfather and Great-Grandmother Fisher died before I was born and I have had little to remember them by except for photographs and seeing their home.  The Fisher home on the corner of Wesley St. and Wheaton Avenue was located on a very large lot across the street from the City Hall.  At the back of the lot stood a large barn.  The spacious lawn surrounded the house.  Between the lawn and the barn were flower beds, the vegetable garden and several fruit trees along the back of the lot, a white, wooden picket fence enclosed the property.

The house had many rooms;  the one that I found so interesting was under the house.  It wasn't what I would call a basement, because that was where the furnace was. And it had a paved floor.  This part had a dirt floor and had several screened windows, which kept it cool.  It was quite dark in there until your eyes adjusted to the dim light.  There were large trays up on legs that had open wire mesh bottoms; they called this the "root cellar".  Potatoes were in a pit in one corner covered over with loose dirt and could be easily retrieved.  In the trays were carrots, onions, squash and other vegetables things from the home garden.

Their children: Grandpa, Uncle Earl, Aunt Alice, Aunt Edith were all born in that house; three other children died in infancy.

Aunt Edith, who had married Marion Pittsford, moved their family into the home with Great-Grandma Fisher in 1914.  Aunt Edith died in 1931.

Big changes were coming to Wheaton.  The barn was put on rollers and moved to face on Wheaton Ave. where once was lawn and garden.  Remodeled, it became an attractive residence next to the old house.
