 Generation  V-1 Hatcher-Gardner-Moss

Jonathan, the oldest child of Jesse and Anna Marie, came from Virginia to Muskingum County about 1820.  They settled near Uniontown, later known as Fultonham.  A news item dated 1828 in the Zanesville Sunday Times Signal mentioned "the Hatcher Farm a cluster of log cabins".  He was the oldest of nine children.

The Goshen M.E.church at Uniontown was organized in 1830 by the Rev.John Goshen and assisted by The Rev. Morris Chandler.  Jonathan and Isaiah Gardner were members and attended here .  Rev. J Goshen, in Zanesville, Muskingum Co.married Jonathan and Elizabeth Gardner .  The date of their marriage is recorded in Jesse Hatcher's Family Bible as May 4, 1834 and in the Muskingum County Marriage Book page 165.

1834 May 4th, Jonathan and Elizabeth Gardner were married by  J.Goshen, in Zanesville,   Muskingum Co.

1840 Census Jonathan and family were livng in Rehoboth, Perry Co.Jonathan and Elizabeth were active in the Temperance League where they held positions of leadership.

1850 Census  The family was living in New Lexington, Perry Co. Jonathan was listed as a cabinetmaker.

“ Hatcher, Isaiah, cab mkr, works w s Water b Lee and R.R.,W, Z.. Hatcher   I.G., cab mkr, bds Stinger’s Hotel”.

The family resided in Perry Co. until abt 1866 when they moved to Zanesville in Muskingum Co.
1857 Jonathan was listed as a creditor in the insolvent estate of Dr. S.H.Gordon, one of 36 creditors.  Town of Rehoboth, Clayton Twp settled for 40%


1860    Census , Perry  Co. Isaiah and Elizabeth Gordon were married  May 17, the census shows them living with
Jonathan’s family.

                                                                           The Civil War

 Edmund Hatcher served in    Company  C and F , 62th and 67th OH Volunteers  Infantry
 Isaiah G. Hatcher served in   Company  C and F,  62th  OH Volunteers  Infantry
 William S.Hatcher   various  Compaies   30th  OH Volunteers  Infantry
.
   “Son ,Edmund in 1867 began here as an undertaker shortly afterward he formed a partnership with John H. Crooks
    in the  manufacture of coffins continuing until  1879.
  In 1878 he wrote and published a Funeral Guide which gave the minutest detail  of the   whole funeral obsequies”.

The Zaneszille Coffin Company

  1869    Jonathan and sons opened the first coffin factory in Zanesville. In 1872  the  name was changed to
  J. Hatcher & Co. later it became incorporated and known as The Zanesville Coffin Co.  The officers of the company;
  were President  Jonathan Hatcher, Secretary and treasurer Jesse F. Hatcher, Board of Directors;  Jonathan Hatcher,       I.G.Hatcher, and Jesse F. Hatcher  The company was  capitalized at $ 50,000. They  used water power furnished by the improved Muskingum Water Power  System. They  required one traveling agent.  Annual sales reached  $50,000.  7000 coffins were sold annually. Their office is located at 108 Main St.

 Sometime in 1874 Isaiah  and family   left Zanesville for Cleveland. In 1881 Hatchers sold the Zanesville Coffin Co and moved to Columbus to  establish  The Columbus Casket Works.

1883   Elizabeth Gardner Hatcher died.  The cause was reported to be from blood poisioning.
