Generation V- 4 Johnson-Robinson

J.D. Johnson settled in Brooklyn, a part of Cleveland. He appeared on the Ohio 1850 census. He gives his occupation as a painter. With him is Margaret, William Henry age 16 and Hannah age twelve; born in Ohio . So the Johnsons had been living in Ohio since about 1838 or ten years after the Storers came to Brooklyn. When he became acquainted with George Storer isn't known, but from various pages in George Storer's day book, which I'm fortunate to have, there are several notations that suggest their working together. The records are sketchy with notations about materials, expenses, clients, etc. This is from 1844 to 1847 when he was working as a grainer and marbler.

Margaret Robinson emigrated from Londonderry, Ireland to Toronto, Canada when she was six years old. She is said to have been kidnapped by gypsies when she was seven. The Storers came to Brooklyn about 1834, the Johnsons arrived six years later

Family friend, Maranda Lewis, writing from Rutland County, Vermont on June 24, 1864, gives a glimpse into the time. This two page newsy letter is followed by two pages of sound advice, prescriptions, indications for use, and how to concoct their own "medisin". It appears that J.D.Johnson had other interests than painting. Maranda Lewis referred to his carrying box of "medisin" that he "peddled" from. Her whimsically illustrated letter "D" used throughout should be noted; on the prescriptions it must have made taking medicine easier.

With out a doubt the J.D.Johnson family bible has given us more information on the Johnson/Storer side of the family than any other source and to think we would have lost it back in the "30's (see the Exodus in Gen.2 Chapt.1. This is The Illustrated Domestic Bible by the Rev. Ingraham Cobbins, M. A. Authorized Version with the Marginal References, and the Usual Various Readings Printed and Published by Case Lockwood and Company 1865. The many news articles and clipping pasted in the book have been the source for much of what we know about those times. It is in very good condition; included is a lock of blond hair attached to a bit of lace. Whose? In the other much smaller bible are found the following records.

Due to the poor condition of the page of Births in the smaller Johnson Bible, clarification of some words and dates may be of help.
