John Adams , farmer, lived only a mile southeast of the Congrgational church in Hopkinton, Mass. He died young ,only 39 years old in 1829 leaving five sons and two daughters. Joanna managed the farm and raised her family. We know that the son, John Quincy, who was 5 years old when his father died," worked on the farm year long except for twelve weeks a year when he attended the district school. When he reached his majority, he matriculated at Leicestor Acadamey in Worchestor, Mass. ". Joanna carried on the farm until 1851 when she removed to Chicago, with John Q. and a daughter. The sons were engaged in the milling of grain in Galena , Ill.; later they became established in Chicago.

A portrait of Joanna has been lovingly preserved and passed from Grandmother to Mother to me. She sat for  this painting by Cornelia Fassett, the distinguished artist of Chicago and Washington D.C., who had painted many of our nation's leaders.
