Introduction

The McLeods and the Arrants were neighbors and members of the same churches. The earliest generations were witnesses to documents and the younger generations married each other. Perhaps most important to our McLeod history is the marriage of Angus McLeod II, youngest son of Alexander and Sarah McIntosh McLeod, to Eliza Ann Arrants, daughter of William Arrants and Charity Blyther.

Included on this page are references to some of the records found showing the nature of the relationship between the two families - as more records are found, they will be added to this page.

Generation One (Earliest Known Ancestor)

Johannas Arrants b. bef Aug 1717 and d. Bef. Nov 28, 1766 in Cecil County Maryland married cr. 1743 in Cecil County Maryland to Sarah Phillips b. unknown d. before 1751 in Cecil County Maryland. Johannes married Elizabeth Veazey on 21 Mar 1751/1752 at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, North Elk Neck, Cecil County, Md. Michell Wilson Ligon (Blue font indicates information found at link)

Occupation: Cordwainer (leather worker/shoemaker) Religion: Episcopalian

Information from Arrants family history.

I am looking for information on Johannes Arrants who lived in Cecil Co. Maryland from 1720 -1766. He had sons Harmon, Nathan and William. Harmon's branch went to TN, William stayed in Maryland, Nathan died in Maryland but his wife remarried and took 4 sons from first marriage to Kershaw, SC. If anyone can help with the family after they moved to Kershaw, South Carolina. I would appreciate it. My grand mother was Mabel D. Arrants Ashley, she was born in Camdan, South Carolina on Nov. 29, 1882. She had a sister named Jennie and brother named Burnette. She Married Mosley Samuel Ashley and moved to Waxhaw, North Carolina. Their were 6 children in the family. Thomas Burnette, Donald, Edwin, Jennie Louise, Miriam, and Frances Roland. Help! Message Board

Note: according to "Marylanders to Carolina" - two Arrants brothers, Harmon and Johannas left Maryland along with business partners Thomas Bloom and Zebulon Rudolf after the Revolutionary War and migrated to Kershaw District SC. A third brother, called Nathan, was reportedly drowned in the Potomac River during the War of 1812. The book does not specify if Nathan migrated to SC with his brothers. However.....

Generation Two below is that of a Nathan Arrants born in Maryland and died 1777, no state specified. "Marylanders to Carolina" states that the Nathan who drowned in the Potomac in 1812 left no descendants...yet, we have many descendants of Nathan Arrants. See Note continued below:

Generation Two Child of Johannas Arrants and Sarah Phillips

Nathan Arrants b. August 1717 d. between 23 May 1776 and 3 Mar 1777. He was a Revolutionary War soldier, married to Ann (--?--) -

Note Ann reportedly, along with four sons, migrated to Kershaw District SC after the death of Nathan. Those sons were reportedly Johannas, Nathan and Harmon (plus one unnamed) YET - there has to be some generational confusion .....Nathan died in Maryland in 1777 - yet there are children said to be his born in SC as late as 1815..... obviously, this cannot be.....it possibly was Elizabeth Veazey Arrants (see previous generation above) who migrated after the death of her husband with four sons.....those sons must have brought their own children with them - those children are then represented in the following information - however, as already stated this Nathan reported drowned in 1812 leaving no descendants...:

Question: Which Arrants widow migrated to Camden SC with four sons? If it was Ann, did she remarry another Arrants in SC in order for additional Arrants children to be born as late as 1815 in that state? Which Nathan drowned in the Potomac leaving no descendants? If you can help sort this out, please email.

Generation Three Child of Nathan Arrants and Ann (--?-)

Johannas Arrants b. Feb 19, 1770 Cecil County, Maryland d. Jun 12, 1846 Kershaw District, South Carolina married to Ann Allowayb. May 03, 1775 Cecil County, Maryland Note: Email dated 9/16/2014  states that the Johannas Arrants who died in 1846 was buried at Tiller Ferry Cemetery (Bethany Cemetery) , under a tree without a memorial was from a later generation (see below); his wife, Gatsie Davis Arrants, has a footstone nearby, the emailer cited Findagrave as the source of that information. Further research is needed to determine the death date and place of Johannas Arrants born in Maryland in 1770 as well as his descendant married to Gatsby Davis. The information on Findagrave which claims that the younger Johannas was buried with his wife at Tiller Ferry was not provided by any documentation (i.e. church records/obituary/family bible) but as a story told by a descendant who passed it on to a daughter. Caution is advised.

Records of Johannas Arrants and Ann Alloway

Land Location: 1812 On November 17th 1812, Alexander McLeod purchased from Micajah Woodward 225 acres located "the same more or less situate in the district aforesaid" (meaning more or less in Kershaw District) on Horsepen Branch on the waters of the Scape Or and Black River. The land was part of an December 3 1786/7, 2550 acre grant to Issac Lenoir (State Plats 19:179/plat 099-008 19:279:00). Lenoir had apparently left this portion of his estate to his daughter, who had married Micajah Woodward as her second husband. The land was bordered Southeast by Spann Land; Northeast by Arrants; Northwest by Issac Lenoir's land and Southwest by the Horsepen Branch. The deed was witnessed by John McKay, Alexander's brother in law by 1828. Witness - 1820 - On December 19th, Angus McLeod and Nancy McCutchen McLeod make the first of their presently known land purchases. The purchase is for 200 acres lying on the Beaverdam Branch with a Mill and a 1 acre pond. This land lies in the present day Egypt Community of Lee County and is shown on maps as McLeod Mill Pond. The land remains in the family today owned by Charles McLeod, a several times great grandson. Witnesses were Johannas Arrants and Eliza Mims Sumter County Deed Book F page 269 First referenced in the Von Hacke Records at the Sumter Genealogical Society/copy of Von Hacke paragraph on Angus McLeod sent to LMW by Curtis Waters, deed transcription accessed and copied by Lori McLeod Wilke and David Jay Wilke at the Sumter County Courthouse June 2003

Lewis Ordy Bundle 110 Pkge 1 - Email dated 9/16/2014 - states that Gatsby's name was spelled "Gatsie" - I have used the spelling as found in the Will of her father (transcribed above). The email also clarified that this Johannas Arrants died in 1846 and was buried at Tiller Ferry Cemetery (Bethany Cemetery), under a tree without a memorial; Gatsie has a footstone nearby, citing Findagrave as the source of that information.  The information on Findagrave which claims that Johannas was also buried there was not provided by any documentation but as a story told by a descendant who passed it on to a daughter.  Therefore, his place of burial and date of death cannot be considered "proven" without further research - other sources list the 1846 death year as the date of an ancestor of the same name.)

1856 - On August 28th Alexander E. McLeod sold a tract of land containing 100 acres on the Horsepen Branch. The land was bounded by Robert Arrants on the south west and East by himself, northwest by John Blyther. He retained the rights to raise a mill dam and flood the 100 acres if he should ever chose to do so. The land was sold to Michel Watson who was a neigbor of Alexander's according to various census records. This land was likely part of the inheritance Alexander received in 1835 upon the settlement of his father's estate and upon his reaching his majority. The Beaverdam land mortgaged in 1841 to Roxanna James was also likely part of his inheritance. The witnesses to the deed were his brother, John N. McLeod and Harmon Arrants. Witness 1856 - On August 28th Alexander E McLeod sold a tract of land containing 100 acres on the Horsepen Branch. McLeod and Harmon Arrants Sumter Deed Book T page 271 - Conveyance August 28 1856 - Alexander McLeod to Michel Watson accessed and copied by Lori McLeod Wilke, David J. John's body was carried home to South Caroina by his best friend, Harmon Arrants, and he was buried in Antioch Baptist Cemetery near his nephew William McLeod.
