Oral Tradition "The Clan MacLeod claims its descent from Leod/Ljot, who according to MacLeod tradition was a younger son of Olaf the Black, King of Mann (r.12291237), of a dynasty derived from the famous U mair or House of Ivar. However, articles have been published in the Clan MacLeod magazine which suggest an alternate genealogy for Leod, one in which he was not son of Olaf, but a 3rd cousin (some removed) from Magnus the last King of Mann. In these alternate genealogies, using the genealogy of Christina MacLeod, great granddaughter of Leod, who married Hector Reaganach (McLean/McLaine) these articles suggest that the relationship to the Kings of Mann was through a female line, that of Helga of the beautiful hair. The dating of Christina's genealogy and the ability to line it up with known historical facts lend a great deal of authenticity to the claims of the authors." read more....

Clan Affiliation Membership in the Clan does not require a "blood relationship" or descent from the Founder Ljot; historically Clan Members included the husbands of MacLeod daughters, children fostered by the Clan and those residing on MacLeod lands during the reign of the Lairds or Chiefs and who eventually took the surname when surnames became common. This diversity is represented in the various haplogroups reflected in our project and represented in the tables found on this page.

Background:

This page attempts to compensate for default settings found on the YDNA Results Pages at FTDNA and place the members of the ACMS project in order of Haplogroup, Sub-Clade, Families and suspected branches.

The defaults affect the way that Kits are added to the tables - i.e. Kits are ordered by certain matching STR's (markers) instead of by genetic distance or families testing together etc. - Although there are tools that can be used to manually order the results, not all projects utilize those tools; some of the issues caused by the default setting are:

Different sub-clades grouped together because of a convergence on one or more random markers: two different subclades of R1b grouped together in one table based upon DYS 390. Despite sharing certain matching alleles, these kits have not shared an ancestor in thousands of years

Members of known families experience mutations - even at slow moving STR's: Documented cousins separated by other kits based upon their double mutation at DYS 391 (the mutations took place in a generation since the MRCA b. cr. 1770)

Kits with a 67-1 match with a pattern of mutations indicating a Branch are separated in the tables based upon misses at certain markers: The mutation in the second kit at DYS 491 resulted in his placement in the table with others who have the "11" at that marker instead of with his 67-1 matches - all of whom share a pattern of mutation from the large related group's haplotype.

I Clan MacLeod Project Members - "I...represents nearly one-fifth of the population of Europe. It can be found in the majority of present-day European populations; the greatest density to be found in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Norway, Sweden, Serbia, Sardinia, Denmark and Germany. The Haplogroup is almost nonexistent outside of Europe or Asia Minor, suggesting that it arose in Europe." Wikipedia The ISOGG web site describes the subdivisions roughly as follows: I-M307 has highest frequency in Scandinavia, Iceland, and northwest Europe. In Britain, Haplogroup I-M307 et al is often used as a marker for "invaders," Viking or Anglo-Saxon. I-P37.2 is a common form in the Balkans and Sardinia. I-M223 occurs in Britain and northwest continental Europe.

I1 - "...occurring at greatest frequency in Scandinavia, associated with the mutations identified as M253, M307, P30, and P40."

I2a - ...appears to have originated in the Balkans, perhaps from a glacial refugium there; I2a is very common in Croatia and Bosnia today and decreases in frequency across Eastern Europe. A rare offshoot branch of I2a is also found further West, including in the British Isles. EthnoAncestry

R1a Clan MacLeod Project Members -

Although R1a appears not to be the Founding Haplogroup of the Clan MacLeod, it has been shown to be the Founding Haplogroup of Somerled "known in Gaelic as ri Innse Gall ("King of the Hebrides"). Somerled first appears in historical chronicles in the year 1140... as the regulus, or King, of Kintyre (Cinn Tre) when he marries Raghnailt the daughter of Olaf (or Amhlaibh), King of Mann and the Isles" read more... One of the kits in this table is a Gen. Distance of 37-8 to the Somerled Haplotype.....

Based upon the oral history of the Clan MacDonald, the R1a Haplogroup discovery came as a bit of a surprise - it was believed that Somerled descended from the Irish Kings and not a Viking Ancestry - the R1a designation is carried by all those who are documented as direct descendants and hold the titles of the Clan Chiefs in the present day. The MacLeods and the MacDonalds have a violent history (The Age of Feud and Follies/Battle of the Spoiled Dyke ) with peace not gained until the Ionia Statutes cr. 1609 under the chiefship of Sir Rory Mor. (link to a set of videos explaining this era in history).

The MacDonald's share the SNP M17...."Perhaps the most attractive achievement of the Viking settlers and their descendants was the great medieval Atlantic principality of the west, the Lordship of the Isles. It was essentially the creation of Somerled, also the founder of Clan Donald and the progenitor of its major name-fathers. There is accurate data available from a large sample, from 164 MacDonald Y chromosomes, and they contain a fascinating twist on tradition. Somerled was known to chroniclers as Somerled the Viking and it turns out that the large number in the sample descended directly from him, 23 per cent, carry a specific signature type within the Norse subgroup of M17. Somerled's own ancestors did indeed originate in Scandinavia. And the tradition lives on, for Clan Donald have genotyped the chiefs of their various clan branches and they all carry the old Vikings' marker. " Scotland's DNA: Who do you think you are? - Part 4 Premium Article Published Date: 04 March 2011 By Alistair Moffat and Dr Jim Wilson

Interestingly, a group of MacDonalds, called the Black Subgroup for identification, have tested positive for R-L165 (subclade of R1b) - this group is genetically matched to Buie's and MacNeil's of Barra and together as a cluster have a TMRCA of 1100 years (910 ad) to the R1b MacLeod Haplotype... for more information see R-L165(S68) Project.

As the table below shows, there are six branches/families of R1a Clan Members represented in this Haplogroup.
