Family of John Robert McLeod

John was the son of Daniel M. McLeod and Catherine (McLean?), and the grandson of Angus and Nancy McCutchen/on McLeod. Siblings were: Annie McLeod, wife of Stephen Madison Boykin; Mary McLeod; Margaret McLeod and Elexy Catherine McLeod

John was the grandchild of Sarah McLean whose estate he was named excecutor Sumter County Probate Court Index Bundle 164 pkg 21 Administrative Bond for Sarah McLean dated 1855 admistrator J.R. McLeod

Some have said that John's mother, Catherine McLean McLeod, was the daughter of Charles McLean and Sarah McLEOD, the daughter of Alexander and Sarah (--?--) McLeod however, the 1850 Sumter County Census does not bear this out.....Charles and Sarah McLean are too young to have been the parents of Catherine....and a widowed Sarah McLean, born NC (where Catherine was born) is of the correct age to be her mother but not of Charles McLean.

YDNA Matches

Galtrigal Branch - the Deduced Ancestral Haplotype of two cousins is a 67-1 match to the Deduced Ancestral Haplotype of our family. Descended from Donald the Faithful Pilot who is credited with helping Bonnie Prince Charlie and Flora MacDonald flee after Culloden, the family occupations are Milling and Fine Carpentry as they are in our own family. Galtrigal is located across the loch from Dunvegan Castle. 95% of the time a Common Ancestor will be found between this Branch and our Family in a generation born about 1700.

Colbost - Norman MacLeod, heriditary Galley Maker (Fine Carpentry) to Dunvegan, born about 1700 in Colbost located near Dunvegan. His descendant is a 67-2 from our family haplotype and a 67 - 1 to the Galtrigal Branch. 95% of the time a Common Ancestor will be found between this Branch and our Family in a generation born about 1700. The descendant tested was born in Scotland.

Norman MacLeod - born before 1775 in Scotland; immigrated to Virginia then to Gallia County Ohio - descendants of this man match our Deduced Ancestral Haplotype on markers 1 - 25 perfectly which is unusual in any one other than close relations; however one of the two descendants tested upgraded to the 67 marker level where his results showed 2 mutations in markers 26 - 37 and 2 mutations in markers 38 - 67. 95% of the time a Common Ancestor will be found between this Branch and our family in a generation born between 1530 AD and 1700 AD. One of his mutations are either unique to his paternal line within the larger related group and another is shared with Colbost above; another mutation is on a volatile marker known to mutate in very recent generations. The testing of other cousins and the upgrading of the cousin who tested only 25 markers could tell us more about this match.

We need a descendant (or three) from Daniel's line to triagulate the results to determine Angus MacLeod's Haplotype (think signature). We now have a descendant of Norman and Elizabeth Lackey MacLeod in the project and are awaiting the results to see if that was OUR Norman. Please email if you would be interested in participating in the study!

Family of Sarah Cason

Sarah was the daughter of: James Cason born about 1788 in North Carolina died about 1834 in Sumter, South Carolina and Susanna Pickett born about 1793 in North Carolina died about 1860 in Sumter, South Carolina (source: Bryson Bailey s/o Katherine Joyce Foxworth)

Occupation:

The 1870 Sumter District Census shows that John was a farmer. Family stories indicate that he was in business with John N. McLeod who is believed to be his first cousin. Lore has it that John N. called himself Big John to distinquish between he and his cousin, although first cousins of the same generation, there were 15 years between the two men.

A deed exists which would seem to indicate that they in fact did work together:

Kershaw Grantor Index (1791-1872) KR8 T/289 and T/371 - John N. and John R. McLeod of Sumter District to Daniel Atkinson of Kershaw District

In the 1890's, Harriet Yates McLeod is shown selling a portion of the above property.

Residence # 1081 W.J. Reynolds age 41 - possibly inherited Mill Tract on Beaverdam from James Corbett Sr. in 1846
Residence 1083 Robert and Francis Huggins - parents of second wife of James William Arrants.
Residence #1084 Samual Westberry, father of Johnathon Pickett Westberry, husband of Gatsey Elizabeth McLeod daughter of John N. McLeod and Kitsy Davis

Note: Some records show John as JR McLeod in the household of Kitsy and M. Farmer as a 21 year old school teacher. This is incorrect as John was still in the home of Daniel and Catherine McLeod in 1850 (see above) unless he was enumerated twice.

Also, one source, Dr. Carol Miller McLeod states that the original of the census states J. H. MCLEOD and not J.R. MCLEOD in the the Farmer Residence. The J.R. or J.H. McLeod shown as a teacher in the home of the Farmers could likely have been the son of Daniel and Jane Christmas McLeod, Jerimiah R. McLeod Residence # 1449 Daniel and Jane Christmas McLeod Residence 1448 was the Farmer home. 1860 Census
no information as of 5/28/2003

1860 Census - Some records show John as Head of Household in Bradford Springs, SC with four Children and an adult female M.A. age 25. The children listed in this household are not the children known to be John Robert and Sarah Cason McLeod's children. This M.A. McLeod may be his sister, possibly widowed....if so, the McLeod surname was a mistake by the enumerator.

Children listed as those of John and M.A. McLeod are:

Elen A. age 6,
Elizabeth age 4
Jane age 2 and
G. Daniel age 5.

Note: The transcription of the 1880 Census found at Family search is incorrect in the place of birth of the father of the children shown above. It is known that John Robert was born in South Carolina and not North Carolina. In addition, his own line and information shows his POB as South Carolina. All other census records/transcriptions show SC.

1890 Census

John Robert was deceased in 1886. Sarah was alive until 1915 - her whereabouts in this census are unknown.
The 1890 Federal Census was destroyed by fire. Some states have reconstructed their local census. South Carolina is apparently not one of them.

1900 Census Sumter Genealogical Society, Sumter SC/Tindale Files Possible Census Record of the now Widowed Sarah Cason McLeod. See notes below regarding doubt of correct attachment.

Head of Household in Bradford Springs, SC

Sarah McLeod age 66 (notice age discrepancy with previous census but this is a correct age according to her birthdate) occupation - farmer
Martha age 80
David Smith, age 23 (b. cr. 1877) Farm Laborer
James Smith age 20 Miller

Some records state that David and James Smith were the grandchildren of Sarah and John Robert. The record of Sarah's daughters do not show a marriage to a Smith and due to the age of the eldest, David Smith, I do not believe at this time that this is a correct statement.

David Smith was born in 1877 according to this census. Sarah's eldest daughter's age in 1877 would have been 15. She did not marry Dr. McCutcheon until 1880 making the statement that he is a grandchild of Sarah unlikely.

This is either NOT Sarah, widow of John R. McLeod, or the Smiths were not her Grandchildren.

John and Sarah are shown in Spring Hill in the 1880 Census. I am uncertain that this is a correct attachment to Sarah Cason McLeod, widow of John Robert. Please note this if you take this information for your own files.

The identity of the 80 year old Martha is unknown.

Records of John Robert McLeod

July 1852 Estate of Father, Daniel McLeod - Administrix Catherine McLeod

Note: This is Indexed incorrectly at the Sumter Court House under DAVID McLeod. Also, son John Robert made a second testimony regarding the fact that his father died intestate after the death of Catherine - see below under the November 1853 Estate of Catherine McLeod. Furthermore, a portion of Catherine's estate is filed with Daniel McLeod, husband of Jane Christmas' Estate Records.
