The Interview with Albert John McLeod cr. 1920

"Alexander, with his family, left Scotland and traveled to Ireland for a time. They sailed from Ireland to Virginia and a brother, Norman, was born on board ship. They eventually migrated to Robeson, North Carolina where another brother named Daniel was born. Alexander with his wife, a McIntosh, left for Old Camden District in South Carolina. Alexander had two grants of land on Beaverdam Branch. He had cousins who were Bethunes. Daniel's descendants remain in the area today" (Sumter/Kershaw). Interview notes provided to Lori McLeod Wilke by Col. Purdy Belvin McLeod Jr., who received them from the late Jay Frank McLeod, the Interviewer of Albert John McLeod. Albert was a gr grandson of Angus and Nancy McCutchen McLeod.

Scotland -

Polly's parents, Angus and Nancy McCutchen MacLeod/McLeod, were married around the year 1782 in Scotland. After their first child, Alexander (husband of Sarah McIntosh) was born (1783) they left Scotland and began their migration into North Carolina. According to the above interview, her brother Norman was born on board the ship that sailed to Virginia. Another brother, Daniel was born shortly after their arrival in North Carolina.

Angus and Nancy McCutchen MacLeod/McLeod

North Carolina "another brother called Daniel was born in North Carolina"

Angus and Nancy McCuctchen McLeod arrived in Fayetteville District, Richmond County, North Carolina in time to be enumerated in the 1800 Census of that year. It is unknown to date whether the family was enumerated in the 1790 census of that county due to the destruction by fire of that years records. Four of their children are certain to have been born in North Carolina which is confirmed by their later year census records. Polly may have been one of the four to have been born in this state, however, there is some question regarding this. Census: Fayetteville District, Richmond County, North Carolina Census Year 1800/Census research done by Lori McLeod Wilke into later years using Ancestry.com Census Images on line/

Research into the years the family spent in North Carolina is in the beginning stages. In the 1800 Census, three females were present in the 0-10 age range and two in the 10-15; 2 males in the 10- 15 and one in the 16-26 (Alexander). Current research indicates that Polly, Nancy McLeod Bethune and Betsy McLeod McLeod were the three younger females, while their unmarried sisters (by 1828 at least) Margaret and Catherine were the elder of the sisters. The later year census enumerations of Polly, Nancy and Betsy show they were all born in North Carolina giving them birth year ranges of 1790 - 1800. Census: Fayetteville District, Richmond County, North Carolina Census Year 1800/1810 /Census research done by Lori McLeod Wilke into later years using Ancestry.com Census Images on line/ 1850 Macon County Alabam Census enumeration of Nancy McLeod Bethune born NC; enumeration of Betsy McLeod McLeod born NC; accessed and copied October 14 2004 Ancestry.com Census on line by Lori McLeod Wilke

North Carolina Timeline

John McCoy/McKay

John is said by a descendant to have been the son of Christopher McKay who sailed from Scotland to Nova Scotia aboard the ship "The Hector" in 1773 before migrating to Bladen County in the portion which is part of present day Robeson County North Carolina. This researcher also states that there was only one Christopher McKay in all census records of the thirteen states in 1790 and this McKay was in Robeson County, North Carolina. However, it is possible that our John McKay, husband of Polly McLeod was in fact the grandson of Christopher and not his son. SEE SOUTH CAROLINA INFORMATION FOR FURTHER DETAILS. !Source: McKay And Williard Genealogy http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=mcnerthney&id=I1328

Apparently, prior to 1790, this Christopher and an Alexander McKay were enumerated in Bladen Co., North Carolina Census records and were listed in Captain White's Militia District. A portion of Bladen County became Robeson County in 1787 and Christopher McKay was one of the petitioners for this division and creation of the new county.!Source: McKay And Williard Genealogy http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=mcnerthney&id=I1328

John McKay, the husband of Polly McLeod, was born between 1780 and 1790 in North Carolina according to various census records and it appears that he remained in that state until about 1812 at which time he is found as a witness to the first known land purchase of his brother in law, Alexander McLeod, the husband of Sarah McIntosh.

  • In 1784 John's father, Christopher McKay owned 100 acres in Bladen County.
  • 1795 - State of NC Land Grant, 50 Acres, Great Marsh
  • 1797, State of NC Land Grant, 100 Acres, Both Sides Post Road, Great Marsh 150 Acres east of the Great Marsh
  • 18 Feb 1801. Indenture made this date by Christopher McKay on the one part and John McKay of the other part in consideration of the sum of 100 pounds to Christopher McKay who sells to John McKay two pieces or parcels situated in Robeson County, NC.
  • 1813 - *Father Christopher sells 270 acres in Robeson County; likely just prior to his migration to Kershaw/Sumter District area of South Carolina.

* This is the same time as the migration of our McLeods into the same area of South Carolina.

Where was Polly born ?

We know from the Will of Margaret McLeod, sister to Polly, that John and Polly were married by 1828 - it has been assumed that Polly was present in her parents 1820 household as one of the five females listed......however, there may be evidence that Polly was married to John as early as migration into South Carolina cr. 1812 and not born after immigration from Scotland but before immigration.

I initially thought that Polly had been born in North Carolina. In the 1840 Census, Polly was listed as "female aged 30-40" - a birth year range of 1800 - 1810. In 1844 then she would have been in her 34th or 44th year and based upon all other information on the family (Daniel's 1850 Census where he states he was "60" and born in North Carolina (1790), have been born after their immigration from Scotland. I first began to question this when I learned the birth year ranges of their children...

Census records found to date indicate 2-4 children all born prior to or by the year 1820 and then a gap of about 5 years where no children are born. Although the 1830 Sumter Census enumeration of John and Polly has not yet been found; known census records for the couple indicate that by 1830, John had the following children:

  • John L. McKay (the III?) born between 1810 and 1820 in South Carolina (present in the 1820 census enumeration of John McKay Sr. one of three males aged 0-10 - appears to have migrated with his father to Macon County Alabama present on page 4 near his father and Polly in the 1840 census of that county) !Source: Name of Eldest Son - McKay And Williard Genealogy http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=mcnerthney&id=I1328
  • Charlotte McKay (later McDonald) born after 1820 in South Carolina (not present in the 1820 cesus enumeration of John McKay Sr. - note: her 1850 census enumeration in Alabama shows her age as 35 but this does not appear to be correct due to the 1820 census and her 1860 enumeration which shows her as aged 40). Her parentage is certain due to the writings of her husband's twin, Angus McDonald, at a later date which also states that she was married in South Carolina which would have likely have been prior to 1840. She and her husband migrated to Alabama after their marriage. More information later. Census research using Ancestry.Com census on line images by Lori McLeod Wilke 2005/ !Source: http://home.att.net/~hbridges/mcdonskye.htm accessed by Lori McLeod Wilke 2005
  • Alexander L. McKay born between 1810 and 1820 (present in the 1820 census enumeration of John McKay Sr. one of three males aged 0-10 - present in the 1840 Macon County Alabama Census with his father, John McKay Jr. aged 20-30) Census research using Ancestry.Com census on line images by Lori McLeod Wilke 2005
  • Neil McKay born about 1817 in South Carolina (present in the 1820 census enumeration of John McKay Sr. one of three males aged 0-10 - appears to have migrated with his father to Macon County Alabama present on page 4 in his father and Polly's home in the 1840 census of that county) Census research using Ancestry.Com census on line images by Lori McLeod Wilke 2005

Furthermore, Polly's Obituary states she was born in Scotland:

The Charleston Observer, A Presbyterian Newspaper June 8, 1844 Issue Died on the 24th of April last, in the 51st year of her age, Mrs. Mary McKay, wife of John McKay, of Pike County, Alabama. The deceased was born in Scotland, and while an infant, her parents emigrated and settled in North Carolina. For the last eighteen years, the deceased was the subject of suffering. When about 16 years of age, she embraced religion, and became a member of Pinetree Church, South Carolina. In the death of this individual, a husband has been bereft of a kind and affectionate wife; an interesting family of children, of a pious and exemplary mother; and the church of Bethel of an ardent and devoted member. During her protracted illness, she manifested Christian resignation and submission to the will of her Heavenly Father. A large circle of friends mourn her departure, but their loss is her gain. She was desirous to depart and be with Christ, rather than remain here. She trembled not at the approach of the grim messenger, knowing that her redeemer lived. She imitated the wise virgins--had oil in her lamp--and when the Son of Man came, was able to say, Hosannah to the Son of David, blessed be the King who cometh in the name of the Lord. Provided by Bruce McKay on May 27th 2010

The 1800 Census record of Angus MacLeod show two females between the ages of 16 and 25 - although I previously believed that these two females were Margaret and Catherine, Polly may have been one of them - and born in Scotland. If so, her birth year range is incorrect in the 1840 census. Taking all of the available information together, it would appear that Polly was born in Scotland cr. 1795 which places immigration later than originally believed.

However, the gap in the birth of children to John may indicate that he was previously married and that the obituary was not written by a family member but by someone who provided incorrect information...we may never know the truth.

South Carolina November 1812 - 1839

The earliest confirmed record found in South Carolina for Polly's family is that of her brother, Alexander McLeod, the husband of Sarah McIntosh. Alexander purchased 225 acres on the Horsepen Branch "more or less situate" in Kershaw County/District. This land actually bordered the county line between Kershaw and Sumter which can be confirmed by the location of Horsepen Branch, a tributary of the Beaverdam Branch of the Scape Or River as shown on both an 1824 and 1870 Mill Map of the area. The deed was witnessed by a John McKay. Deeds and Conveyances, Kershaw District, South Carolina; page 116 Book G

Some question exists as to the exact identity of the John who was witness to this deed....was the witness the John Mckay who would marry Polly in the 1820's or was it that John's father? The question arises due to the 1820 Sumter District Census enumeration of a Christopher McCoy/Kay and next door to him, a John McCoy/Kay who is shown in the 45+ age range. 1820 Sumter District South Carolina Census page 114 enumerations of Christopher McKay/McCoy and John McKay/McCoy Census research done by Lori McLeod Wilke

The 1840 Census enumeration of Polly and her husband, John McKay, show that John was aged 50 - 60 or born between 1780 and 1790; this birth year range would make him between 30 and 40 in 1820. In the 1820 Sumter District SC enumeration of the John McKay aged 45 +, a male is shown in the 26 - 44 year age range and is likely then the John who was was married to Polly McLeod. The last known census record of Polly's husband shows that he was 60 years old in 1850 which fits this theory. Census Macon County Alabama Year 1850 research by Lori McLeod Wilke

In January of 1817, a John McKay is shown purchasing land on the Beaverdam Branch of the Scape Or in Sumter District; this deed was witnessed by Daniel McLeod, who is likely to have been the brother of Polly. The 1820 Sumter District Census indicates that John McKay and possilby his father, also a John McKay, and his grandfather Christopher McKay were neighbors of Polly's parents, Angus and Nancy McCutchen McLeod. Between 1820 and 1827, her father, Angus makes several purchases of property on the Beaverdam Branch, all of which adjoin his first known purchase made in December of 1820. Aged about 70 - 80 years upon his migration into Sumter South Carolina, he begins to settle his estate in 1827 by selling property to Polly's sisters Margaret and Catherine, both of whom are unmarried. By 1830, he is found living with Polly's sister, Nancy and her husband Roderick and in 1831, Angus sells the original property upon which he lived to her brother Daniel. In March of 1824, Alexander McLeod, the husband of Sarah McIntosh was deceased and his estate began probate on the 8th of that month. A portion of the estate was sold to pay debts, as was usual. The sale took place on May 6th 1824 and John McKay was present and purchased an unknown item for the amount of .68 cents. In 1828, Polly's sister, Margaret McLeod, wrote her will which was probated in January of 1829. In this will, she leaves her slaves to her unmarried sister, Catherine, and "all the rest and residue" of her estate to her sister Nancy McLeod Bethune. Although she names her other sisters, Polly and Betsy, and their husbands, she does not immediately leave any property to them. In April of 1831, John witnessed the deed in which Polly's father, Angus McLeod, sold his plantation home, which included a Mill and a one acre pond to his brother in law, Daniel McLeod. It appears that Angus was disposing of his estate without a will and the need for probate as he is now living with his daughter Nancy and her husband, Roderick Bethune, also a witness to this deed. This land remains in the family today (2006) owned by inheritance. McLeods Mill Pond can be seen on present day Lee County South Carolina Maps located off of McCaskill Road.

More information on the location of land ownership of the family

The book, Lee County Past and Present Volume II gives detailed information of the formation of that county in 1902. Although many of the records of our family concern land that lies today in Lee County, their records are found in the courthouses of Kershaw and Sumter.

Later years found family members in Buffaloe and DeKalb Townships of Kershaw County and in Spring Hill and Bradford Springs of Sumter County. These four areas have all been incorporated into what is present day Lee County

  • Todays Spring Hill Township of Lee County includes the Providence and Rafting Creek Townships, and Bradford Springs of past Sumter County lies West of and South of the Beaver Dam Swamp - Angus and Nancy McCutchen McLeod's property lie in this area, Daniel and his desendants are found their in later years
    • Description of Bradford Springs/Spring Hill area - Lies in northwestern Lee County in the northern High Hills of Santee. The High Hills parallel the Wateree River for about 40 miles. The springs were considered to be of great health benefit, its waters being used to treat such illnesses as " Inward Night Fevers, Loss of Appetite, or Debility of the Nerves.....cure any scrofulous Humour, old inverterate Ulcers, Tetters, Ringworms etc" Todays communities include Egypt where Angus and Nancy, Daniel and the Bethune's resided. City Gazzette 1814 article as quoted in the book Lee County Past and Present Volume II page 116
  • Today's Ionia Township of Lee County includes the Buffalo township of past Kershaw County which also lies west of the Scape Or Swamp and Carters Crossing of past Sumter County and north of Beaver Dam Swamp and west of the Scape Or Swamp - Alexander and Sarah McIntosh McLeod's land lie in this area
    • Description of Ionia Township area - bounded by the Hickory Hill Township area, in which Alexander II and his owned some property, portions of the Egypt Community appear to lie or bound this area as Lee County Past and Present Vol II states that New Hope Presbyterian Church Cemetery or McLeod Cemetery lies in the Ionia Community.
  • Todays Turkey Creek Township of Lee County includes DeKalb Township of Kershaw County west of the Scape Or and west of Lynches River and the part of old Bishopville Township of Sumter County which lays North of the public road leading from Stokes Bridge on the Lynches River to the Harrison Hall Mill - see the 1821 Mill Map of Stephen H. Boykin for more detailed info (improved in 1825; this area includes the Lucknow Township {incorporated 1897}) - Alexander and Sarah McIntosh McLeods children are enumerated in this area as did Norman McLeod, the husband of Alexander's sister, Betsy McLeod.
    • Nine miles from present day Bishopville and eighteen miles from Camden (Kershaw), Turkey Creek lies on the northern edge of Lee County.

Alexander and Sarah's five children attended Antioch Baptist Church which although lying near the present day Lee County line, remains a part of Kershaw County. The family land lay in the areas of Kershaw near Antioch Baptist Church and in the townships named above now presently in Lee County.

Alabama 1840 - 1852

Beginning in the year 1838, we begin to see Norman and Betsy McLeod McLeod and Roderick and Nancy McLeod Bethune sell some of their South Carolina property obviously in preparation for their migration to Alabama. No records have yet been found in which John and Polly sell their land, but research is continuing.

By 1840, the three families are found, along with John's eldest and married son John L. McKay on pages 2 and 4 of the Macon County Alabama Census. The girls' mother, Nancy McCutchen McLeod, now widowed and aged about 60 - 70, is found to have migrated with them. Research into the families after migration is in its beginning stages.

John is found in the 1850 Macon County Alabama Census, a widower aged 60 years, and living with two of his children, Malcolm aged 36 and Alexis aged 23. John died on March 12, 1852 and was buried beside Polly on the 16th of that month. Their daughter Alexis died on August 6th 1854 and is also buried there. John wrote his will on Jan 13 1852, obviously ill as he died almost exactly 2 months later. Will dated Jan 13, 1852. Probated May 10, 1852, Pike Co. Witness: Roderick Bethune, Duncan D. Campbell, Daniel McCaskill. Executor - son Alexander L. McKay

Children of John McKay and Polly (aka Mary) McLeod

1. John L. MCKAY b. bet. 1810 and 1820 (1850 census indicates a birth year of 1815) in , Sumter, South Carolina married first 23 Oct 1836 in Kershaw, South Carolina to Nancy Chisholm MCCASKILL B. 12 Sep 1809 in Skye, Inverness, Scotland Marriage and Spouse information found at McKay and Williard Genealogy; Karen Willard, [email protected] located at World Connect, Rootsweb.com

The information below was provided by Bruce McKay June 6 2011 {italics/red font mine - June 9 2011LMW}

Information came from a descendent of Daniel McKay. A daughter named Minnie Roberta Blue had a daughter named Ruth Blue Barnes (RBB). RBB did a lot of genealogy in the 1950's and has since passed on.

Her work is in the Ellen Payne Odom Genealogy Library in Moultrie, GA. This is what she wrote about Nancy McCaskill.

Her is name was Nancy Chisholm McCaskill b. 1810 in Scotland and came from Scotland in 1822 at the age of 12.

She had a sister named Jennie McCaskill b.1784, d. Aug 25, 1849 m. John Leslie.

Had a brother John McCaskill went to TX died there.

Sister Flora married a Worthington.

Brother Malcolm went to Mobile and died there.

John L. left home before the war.

Bennie Lula Rayborn Alexander was the daughter of Mary Ann Katherine McKay Rayborn, Nancy's daughter, and she wrote a letter in 1955 about the McKay's and McCaskill's. She didn't know the names of her great-grand-parents, but knew them only as grand-father and grand-mother.

Grand-father (John Donald McCaskill) was a well known bible reader. He read to people in English and Gaelic. Her mother Mary Ann Catherine McKay was married at the age of 16 years.

John L. McKay and Nancy were separated, and John L. remarried in Louisiana. He left a sizeable estate to two daughters in Louisiana.

The children of his first marriage were encouraged to contest the will, but they never did.

Mary Ann Catherine Rayborn lived with uncle Neil McKay during the war, her parents had passed away. Bennie was 77 years old and she was still working at the DMV. There a lot related Alexanders in TX.

Letter written by Bennie Lula Rayborn in 1955: Nancy is one of your several GGGrandmothers. Nancy came with her family to Kershaw County, NC from the Isle of Skye, Invernessshire, Scotland in 1811. Married in the Kershaw District, on the 23rd inst. (23 Oct 1836), by reverend M. D. Frasier, Mr. John L. McKay to Miss Nancy Chisholm McCaskill, all of Kershaw District. (November 5, 1836 Issue of the paper). This Nancy McCaskill was Nancy Chisholm McCaskill and Rev.M. D. Frasier was the minister of the Pine Tree Presbyterian Church in Cassat, SC (Pine Tree Church Records).

She Married John L. McKay who's mother was Mary Polly McCleod McKay whose obituary from Pike County, AL mentioned that she was a member of the Pine Tree Church. Nancy and J.L. McKay had their first son Angus C. in 1837 and probably lived with the John McKay Sr. at the farm at Horse Pen creek near Cassat SC until they all moved to Pike Co. Al in about 1838. In the 1840 Census they were all together in Macon Co., AL, all, living a few farms away. J. L. McKay and Nancy had an 11 year old female mulatto complexion slave named Mathabey in 1840. The story about Mathabey is very interesting.

In 1840, February 4, J.L. McKay obtained a loan for $100, with three promisary notes for $33.33 each. The security for the loan was Mathabey the female slave, eight head of cattle and one bay mare. The total sum plus interest to be paid back in two years was a total of $160 .

By May 27, 1843 he had not paid off the loans, and foreclosure was initiated unless he paid the loan immediately. To solve the problem John L. McKay was to be paid one dollar for the described property by his uncle Norman McCleod, Mary McLeod McKay's brother (in Law) your GGGrandmother and wife of John McKay Sr., {was}a very successful farmer and State Legislator.

Norman McCleod was to offer the property to the highest bidder and pay the debt off. If there was extra money John L. McKay would be paid the overplus. If the funds were insufficient John L. Mckay would be liable for the deficit. Sounds like Norman McCleod was trying to help his nephew. This could be an indication of some hard times for Nancy and John L. McKay

In the 1850 Census the McCaskills were living in Pike county, AL. Catherine and John Donald McCasskill, Nancy's parents, were listed as both 79 Years old. Their son John C. McCaskill was listed as 30 years old with family, and was a Justice of the Peace for the State of AL, Pike Co. His name will appear in many county transactions, but one of interest was the sale of Jack a slave.

When John McKay Sr.'s. will was administered Jack was sold for $346 to his son Alexander L. McKay in September 1852, and John C. McCaskill was the Justice of the Peace signing the document. Now that John L. McKay's mother Mary Polly McLeaod McKay and father John McKay Sr. had passed away he left home never to return between 1852 and 1858. The family said that he {Alexander?} went to LA and started a new family. They thought about having one of the family go and see if they could get some inheritance but it never happened..

Catherine Chisholm McCaskill died in July 1855.
John Donald McCaskill died in Aug of 1859 both in Pike County, AL, buried at Indian Creek, Pike County, AL.

Wonder if Nancy Chisholm McCaskill {McKay}might be buried there?

In 1858 Nancy C. McCaskill {McKay} buys 100 acres, and then sells the same property in 1859.

In about 1859 Nancy C. Mccaskill {McKay} moved to Sabine County, TX with her family.

In about 1860 John C. McCaskill {brother of Nancy McKay?} and family moved to Dewitt County, TX. In the 1860 census for Sabine County, TX, Nancy Chisholm McCaskill {McKay} is enumerated with sons Angus C., Daniel, Malcolm, and Peter. No John L. McKay.

Next door is Joseph Elijah Rayborn Married to Mary Ann Catherine McKay Rayborn soon to have a son John in 1860. Mary Ann was married at the age of 16 years. They left a lot of related Rayborns in TX.

"I was born December 1, 1815, came to Alabama in 1844, and married January 1, 1846, Mary McKay, the youngest daughter of John McKay, Esq., of South Carolina. In her were concentrated more of those mental qualities that constitute the Christian lady, daughter, wife, mother, and unswerving and true friend, than can often be found in mankind.

She was immorally fixed in her convictions of right, always willing to hazard all other considerations in the maintenance of truth and elevated humanity. But more of Heaven could not live upon earth, therefore the Lord took her to her blissful and eternal home.

She was the mother of ten children, seven of whom survived her. Donald Warnock, the first son, died at Louisville, Ala., aged three years. Lexie, a child of sweet character, died in Montgomery County, Ala., aged ten years. Knox, a boy of fixed manliness of character, died near Inverness, Ala., aged twelve years. Bethune, who survived his mother, died at the age of twenty-four years, while living in Montgomery, Ala. in March 1888. He was a son of whom any father could be justly proud. He possessed a mind of unusual force and brilliency and a gentleness, yet manliness of character which endeared him to all good people who came to know him. He was a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church, and before his death had acquired a position in the business world which gave promise of a most successful and useful career. Of my children still living there are two daughters and four sons: - Mary Ann; Florella; John K; Donald; Malcom; and Frank. The character of the living members of my family, including myself, I leave for some other pen to portray.
