THE STATE
VETERAN RESIDENT DIES IN COLUMBIA
provided by Mike Gillis February 12, 2011

Funeral of Mrs. Dorian S. Macfeat Tomorrow

Mrs. Dorian S. Macfeat, widow of the late William Tucker Macfeat, died yesterday at noon at her residence, 1717 Pickens Street, after an illness which had extended over several weeks.

Mrs. Macfeat, who was 87 years old at the time of her death, had spent practically her entire life in this city and was known to hundreds of Columbians who will join the members of the immediate family in mourning her passing.

Mrs. Macfeat, who was Miss Dorian Hurst, was reared by her grandfather, Jesse Killingsworth, on a plantation near Columbia, her own parents having died when she was a small child. She attended school in Columbia, first being a pupil at Muller’s Academy for Young Ladies, located where the High School now stands, and later being a student at the Martin Academy.

She was married to W. T. Macfeat, who died not long after the close of the Confederate War.

After the war Mrs. Macfeat opened a private school in this city and taught successfully for many years. There are many men and women in this city today who will recall with tender emotion her instruction and patience in the classroom, and who are realizing more and more as the years go by the influence for good which she exercised over those who came under her direction. She had the distinction of being the first teacher in South Carolina under the Peabody fund endowment. She was held in the highest esteem by her former pupils and in warm affection by her friends, both white and black.

Mrs. Macfeat was a woman of wide culture and scholarship and was possessed in a marked degree of the gentle graciousness and winsome womanliness that distinguished so many of the ante-bellum women of the South. She was of attractive personality and charming manner and despite her advanced age kept closely in touch with affairs about her, and never lost her interest in the progress of her home city.

Her death removes from Columbia a connecting link with the past and there will be many homes and hearts sadder today because of her passing. When a girl of about 14 years Mrs. Macfeat joined the old Marion Street Methodist church, she being the first person to join that church. She lived a useful Christian life and her good deeds were numerous.

Surviving Mrs. Macfeat are her two daughters, Miss Minnie Macfeat, director of the kindergarten training school at Winthrop, and Mrs. L.D. Yarborough of Columbia, and a son, T.D. Macfeat of Columbia. Another son, W.H. Macfeat, for many years official court stenographer of this district, preceded her to the grave by several years. Four granddaughters surviving are Misses Annie Erwin Macfeat, Minnie and Clara Yarborough of Columbia and Mrs. Harry M. Moorhead of Brooklyn, NY.

The funeral services will be held at the residence Saturday at 11 o’clock and will be conducted by the Rev. W.I. Herbert of Bennettsville, long a friend of the family.

7. Sydney B Hurst -- minor as of September 1845

1) Rosa Lee Hurst b. Abt. 1879 Providence Township, Sumter County, South Carolina, United States Of America d. December 24, 1936 Buried Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery married to William Nelson Ives born December 13 1860 Rafting Creek, Sumter County, South Carolina d. February 10 1939 Sumter County, South Carolina Buried Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery

William Nelson Ives was the son of Charles Ives and Sarah Hite. He was the grandson of Matthew Ives and Julia Freeman. Nancy's brother, Jesse Lazarus McLeod would later marry (as his second wife) another grandchild of Matthew and Julia whose name was Mary Rosa Ives. Rosa was the daughter of Joseph Freeman Ives and Sarah Ann Ross.

After the death of Nancy (Mamie), Rosa was raised for a time by her grandparents. It is unknown to date which set of grandparents with whom she lived. No census records have yet been found to indicate her presence in Alexander and Harriet Yates McLeod's home. Descendants report that she spent some time in a local orphanage attending school before her marriage at age 16. Further research is necessary.

Children of Rosa Lee Hurst and William Nelson Ives

Note: The 1930 Census shows that 52 year old Rosa had married at age 16 cr. 1893- it also shows 4 children born between 1915 and 1922. Rosa's age in 1930 and the fact that Bertie Ives is not shown in that census in their home indicates that she was born bef. 1915. The year gap between the marriage (1893/4 and 1915) when the first child shown on the 1930 census was born also indicates that there may be more children than shown on this page. An initial search of the 1920 census has not revealed William and Rosa. Further research into that census may reveal the existence of more children. Using two years between each birth, beginning in 1895, as many as 11 other children may have been born.
